For me it was something like this (this trip began about ten years ago): Progressive Rock/Metal (my first musical obsession) -> Instrumental Prog -> Fusion (Weather Report, Return to Forever) -> Miles Davis - In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew -> '50s Miles And from there everything else developed. Right now I'm 29 and listening to a lot of classic '40s bebop (and still very much into Prog, in case anyone is wondering).

Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music
Kyo replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'll be listening a lot to those Gene Ammons studio jam sessions in the next weeks (got all the other ones already, just never really found the time to really listen to them). Not so sure about that one either, but I wanted to have all the Prestige material that Webster Young played on. I just discovered him through Jackie McLean's Prestige discs and this one features them both (and Mal Waldron, too), so I guess it can't be too bad. -
Recent Down Loads And Additions From E - Music
Kyo replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Today I got the following: Gene Ammons - Funky Gene Ammons - Jammin' with Gene Gene Ammons - Jammin' in Hi-Fi with Gene Ammons Gene Ammons - The Happy Blues Joe Newman - Jive at Five Joe Newman - Good 'n' Groovy Joe Newman - Joe's Hap'nin's (first seven tracks from The Hot Trumpets of Joe Newman and Henry "Red" Allen) Philly Joe Jones - Showcase McCoy Tyner Big Band - Uptown/Downtown Paul Quinichette - On the Sunny Side Ray Draper - Tuba Sounds Webster Young - For Lady Tadd Dameron - The Magic Touch Tadd Dameron - Fontainebleau Plus some individual tracks: four tracks of the Don Lanphere Quartet with Fats Navarro (from Prestige First Sessions Vol. 1) two tracks of Coleman Hawkins featuring Fats Navarro (from Bean and the Boys) the final three tracks from Albert Ayler - The Copenhagen tapes (the rest of the disc is part of the Ayler box set) That's a LOT of great music for 20 bucks! -
I like it a lot, too. Not my favorite Mobley album, but certainly worth getting!
-
Indeed. Though I think Fantasy COULD have come up with a compilation that DIDN'T include material on other Fantasy twofer CDs and DID include the WHOLE of the "Night lights" LP with Wynton Kelly, which is one of my favourite Jugs. I AM conscious that this is nitpicking, but it means the whole of that LP will never come out on CD. This bugs me as well. They could at least release those missing Night Lights tracks through eMusic and such.

Finally got this today. The trio sessions aside it also includes the four tunes from Red Norvo's Dial session with his "Selected Sextet" and an alternate take for each of them - to think I almost ordered the Red Norvo On Dial CD today before I noticed this!
-
They have several "Timeless" releases, all of which (I think) lack some tracks compared to the other compilations listed in this thread. In the case of the Art Pepper set for example I really don't see what the point of yet another compilation was.
-
I know this is an old thread, but let me say that this is a great idea for a discussion! I love those late 60s John Patton albums and I agree that the Pharoah solo stuff is similarly fascinating.

Some of those compilations are a bit weird in terms of material included (often incomplete sessions). There's one thing I really like about this series though: The liner notes are usually excellent.

Max Roach, Miles Davis Mosaics running low
Kyo replied to J.A.W.'s topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
30 for me... Seems like they guesstimated the actual worth of the parcel. -
Wasn't that other Jazz Message session originally led by Kenny Clarke? The band is the same that recorded Klook's Clique the same year. The music on that set is good, but nothing earth-shattering. The annoying thing about it is that for some reason the ballad medley was left off (otherwise it would've been a complete compilation of both Jazz Message albums and Introducing Lee Morgan).
-
Yeah, that was what inspired me to start this thread. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...st&p=623510 I knew the list wasn't complete (no Milt Jackson, for example), so I started this thread to find more of those compilations.

Yeah, I've ordered quite a lot from them recently. I think most of it was sent from Switzerland. They split big orders up into 3/4 disc combos, so I've never had problems with additional customs fees. Everything was delivered rather quick and in excellent shape (all discs were new and still shrink-wrapped). So far I'd really recommend them. Never had any problems and some of their prices are awesome (most of the Blue Note/EMI discs, for example).
-
Oh well. I could actually use a break from buying CDs for two to three months, so this is no big deal. Just weird.
-
Is the Jimmy Scott stuff any good? I've never heard of him to be honest. The Leo Parker disc sounds interesting, thanks for mentioning it!
-
Prices for the new batch are down to €7.89 at plattenladen.com, but they too give a September 14th release date. WTF?!
-
Thanks for the additions, couw! Just got all three of those from eBay sellers, each for about 6-7 Euros (including shipping!) That's a killer price for a two disc set - and the Gillespie even includes three CDs!
-
Some earlier compilations that aren't part of either series: Howard McGhee - Maggie - The Savoy Sessions This is a picture of the double LP set, but it's also available on CD. Unlike the two compilations below, this one hasn't been reissued in an expanded form. The CD omits four tracks (two of those being alternates). Billy Eckstine - Mister B. and the Band - The Savoy Sessions It contains some tracks that aren't on the 2 disc set mentioned above. The Red Norvo Trio with Tal Farlow and Charles Mingus - The Savoy Sessions Dizzy Gillespie - Dee Gee Days - The Savoy Sessions
-
There's one more compilation that's probably part of the "Originals" series, but a bit different in terms of design: Lee Morgan/Donald Byrd/Hank Mobley - The Birth of Hard Bop (2 CDs) And now those black digipacks: Charlie Parker - The Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes (3 CDs) Lester Young - The Complete Savoy Recordings (2 CDs) Billy Eckstine - The Legendary Big Band (2 CDs) Stan Getz - The Complete Savoy Recordings J.J. Johnson - Origins - The Savoy Sessions Am I missing anything?
-
I am currently hunting down all those Savoy compilations (I mean the more or less complete sets of an artist's material, no "best of" compilations). There are two types of design - the "Savoy Originals" digipacks (although some of those seem to be available as jewel case editions) and the black digipacks. Here's what I found so far: Charlie Parker - The Complete Live Performances on Savoy (4 CDs) Erroll Garner - The Complete Savoy Master Takes (2 CDs) Wilbur Harden & John Coltrane - The Complete Savoy Sessions (2 CDs) Yusef Lateef - The Last Savoy Sessions (2 CDs) The Adderley Brothers - The Summer of '55 (2 CDs) Art Pepper - The Discovery Sessions Milt Jackson - Early Modern Unlike the other sets, this is hardly a comprehensive Milt Jackson compilation - more like "the early MJQ sides with some other examples of Jackson's music". Fats Navarro - Goin' to Minton's Kenny Dorham - Blues in Bebop Dexter Gordon - Settin' the Pace continued in next post...

The question is: Why isn't this stuff available here directly from Universal?

AOTW June 10-17: Joe Henderson POWER TO THE PEOPLE
Kyo replied to Big Al's topic in Album Of The Week
I agree, but I think you're not allowed to post something positive about Orrin Keepnews here! -
I'm not quite sure what's going on here, but so far three of those orders were cancelled by the seller because the item was not available. Weird... In the end four of those five orders were cancelled. I did get the Kenny Cox disc today, though. Weird! At least I did get the disc that was my No. 1 priority. Just listening to this music for the first time - AWESOME!
-
Yeah, they'll do that. If that track had indeed been defective (seems it wasn't after all), the effect would have been that it would've been taken down and stayed unavailable for ages. Example: http://www.emusic.com/album/10604/10604781.html I reported some nasty digital noise in the first track last June or so. It's still not back up! Another example: http://www.emusic.com/album/10602/10602138.html I've been waiting for the last two tracks to be put back up forever. How hard can it be to get those songs from Concord in one way or another? I already grabbed the rest of the album, so I'm not going to buy the CD just for those missing two tracks...

Blue Note/EMI/Capitol/Pacific Jazz Recommendations
Kyo replied to Guy Berger's topic in Recommendations
Just ordered the Navarro/Dameron set and Sonny Clark's Leapin' and Lopin'. Thanks for the reminder!
