  1. Something good actually came from this (me selling that CD): I only then realized that it had also been issued on one CD together with Art Blakey's "Tough!". Got the disc (called "Percussion Discussion") this week. Sound is drastically different from the stand-alone edition of "Max!" btw., a lot more trebly (sounds better to me that way).
  2. Got it today - amazingly fast shipping as usual. I got Roach set #2893 (well, I *think* that's what it says - you really need some imagination for this one...)
  3. I got this not too long ago as a Japanese CD and it's one of my favorites among the Hutch/Land stuff.
  4. I'm not quite sure what's going on here, but so far three of those orders were cancelled by the seller because the item was not available. Weird...
  5. I like it quite a lot. Don't forget that it also includes the Spiral session, so it's a really full disc.
  6. I think both the Dexter in Radioland and the Swiss Nights series came out as boxsets of some sort in Japan, although I've never seen them. Maybe someone else can give us some details on those, as I'm interested in that material as well.
  7. I agree that the many alternate takes are annoying, but with CD burners and mp3 players you can easily compile your own master takes collection and I think the price is not too bad considering that it contains six complete albums (remember how expensive those SteepleChase discs usually are!).
  8. Just ordered all five from ImportCDs com for about 13 Euro per disc (incl. shipping).
  9. That's the easy part. Figuring out which takes were originally issued is harder. Sometimes they mention it in the liner notes, sometimes they don't. It doesn't help that the track running times for some of those albums are incorrect on both allmusic.com and the official Steeplechase website. I like to split box sets into the original albums on my iPod (with a "master playlist" that contains the entire boxset in its regular order) and that was quite difficult with this set. The music is great though and considering I paid less than 40 Euros for it I can't really complain.
  10. Finally ordered the Max Roach set. And since I didn't want to waste the $200 limit for the $30 in shipping costs, I also ordered the new Andrew Hill Solo Select (which will complete my Hill collection) and the John Patton one (which I've been meaning to get for months - completing my collection of BJP Blue Notes).
  11. If you don't have it on your list (or have it already), add: Booker Ervin: Booker and Brass This was a standard Pacific Jazz/EMI issue, and it's a very good session in great sound. There are a lot of Booker fans here, but this session seems to get overlooked. At any rate, I'm a fan. It's out of print, but I just got it off eBay for 4,53 GBP.
  12. This is just insane, especially for a copy with a water-damaged booklet: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...A:IT&ih=013 $113.61!!

    Tower.com

International shipping is $2.99 per item (you can choose expedited and priority shipping, too). Not too bad.
  14. The new Dream Theater album Systematic Chaos came out today (at least here in Germany): Also available as a special edition with a bonus DVD that includes a 90 minute making of video and the entire album in 5.1 surround sound: I think it's their best in years, excellent stuff.
  15. The prices for the new Conn batch are unusually high at plattenladen.com - €16,29 instead of the usual €14,09. Guess I'll wait until Zweitausendeins offers those albums.
  16. Got this today, paid about 38 Euros including shipping (from caiman via amazon.de). Their offer for the Dexter Gordon Steeplechase box (which I also got) was even better (about 37 Euros incl. shipping). Contrary to the track listing on the label's website the sixth CD does include the "alternate take" of A Long Drink of the Blues. I wouldn't complain if they'd left it off though as it is in fact just a false start with some dialogue following (total track length 2:23). Impressions so far: The two Jubilee albums sound way worse than the Prestige stuff (pretty hissy). The booklet is a mixed bag. It contains good color pictures of all the album artwork (four albums per page - the booklet has the standard jewel case format). I haven't read the essay on McLean yet, but the writeup titled "recordings" is about as exciting to read as is the discographical info itself. What I really don't like is that they put the discographical info (including small pictures of the album covers) into the small (four page) booklets of the jewel cases instead of including it all in the 20 page booklet for the box set. There are several pictures of Jackie McLean (at various stages of his career), but none of the sidemen. What annoys me is the fact that two discs each are packaged as a stand-alone set. It can be pretty irritating that it says "CD 1" in big letters on the disc when in fact it's the third or fifth disc of the set - the "volume 2" or "volume 3" font is much smaller.
  17. I live in Germany and would be willing to pay $30 for this (incl. shipping). Payment via PayPal (or money transfer if within Germany).
  18. My favorite source for hard to find music (amazon.com's marketplace) now charges $6.89 for international shipping per item (used to be $5.49).

    Joe Gordon

That one was issued as a bonus on Art Blakey's "Blakey" (a Verve Elite Edition). I just got it yesterday, haven't had time to listen to it yet but should be good.
  20. Hilarious thread, thanks for reviving it - just read this for the first time! Those were my favorites so far! Here's some more: Jackie McLean/Eric Dolphy - Destination: Out to Lunch Grant Green/Lonnie Smith - I Want to Move Your Hand Horace Silver/Lonnie Smith - Doin' the Think! Cecil Taylor/Larry Young - Unity Structures Jackie McLean - New and Old Soil Tony Williams - Spring, Sprang, Springin' Bobby Hutcherson - Monologue Tina Brooks - Back to the Crack (sorry... ) and my personal favorite: Big John Patton/Freddie Hubbard - Got a Good Thing Goin' Up
  21. WTF?! Why isn't this included? I just sold the individual disc thinking it would certainly be part of the box set. Damn!
  22. I don't get it. You mean just that one alternate take? I thought you were talking about something substantial.
  23. Milt Jackson - The Complete Savoy Recordings I wish... But I'm listening to the individual albums at least.
