ok ok i just got that dex BOPLAND/complete elks concert.....3 cd set::: is this truly the 1st time ALL this has been released.....is it really the compalete known footage of this concert? How many of you people are familiar w/ this concert and could share with us a little about its importance in the place of west coast jazz and mankind in general. in getting this "complete recordings" set, my 1st thing i learned from it, there is a lot more sonny criss on this then the other cds n lps i had of this material: sonny is so much better on this than people like to believe....in fact there are a few disticnt licks or melodic phrases towards the middle of disc 3, that i will not hear again in saxophone imporvisation till the LATE 70s/EARLY 80, on something like Grover Washington Jr, WINELIGHT. Or that really good fred hubbard lp w/ Art Pepper, MISTRAL or something like that. But of course the stars of this show are Dex and Wardell: it is their absoutle most classic moment, individually and collectively. Can some of you share your "insight" into this concert, etc

It's Horace Silver's 80th birthday today!
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez replied to Cyril's topic in Artists
Horace Silver: 80 years of hard bop! thank u for inventing it with hank -
all u guys gotta at least CHECK OUT the vic feldman, lets say, beacuse it is VIC FELDMAN. this is the same guy who did SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN. You have to respect the progression. Synthesizers got really better in the 80s which allowed these musicans this extended pallate. if synth had been that advanced in 1974 fusion would of progressed into your much hated "smooth jazz" sooner

Pacific Jazz / World Pacific labelography
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez replied to Daniel A's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
post a label of a PACIFICA issue and ill be seriously impressed -
FATTBURGER should of been the most popular 80s jazz groups of all time. Their sax player Hollis Gentry III is one of the true greats of modern age west coast jazz, and any one who isn't hip to him doesn't really follow wcj or the progression of jazz music in general. Their 1984 debut ONE OF A KIND should be in any respectible collection of anyone who enjoys post 1968 jazz.

How many of you have heard of the 80s fusion group Flim & The BB's. Are they considered contenders with comporable 80s fusion artists. I havent heard their cds in years and in fact ive completly forgotten what they sounds like, however they were the 1st jazz group to appear on cd format and their early lps are some of the 1st direct to digital lps on the market or something like that-- remember i told u guys about how i think all jazz should be in mono? well flim & bbs is a notable exception

How many of you are familiar, or patently aware of Basia Trzetrzelewska, aka "Basia". She is the 1st Pole to crack the American Top 40. I wouldn't go as far as calling her a musical genius, but she is just a slight step down from that// her principal fault is that she has men collaborators who have distorted her out put, eg. her albums suffer from poor production choices, 1st lp for epic, TIME AND TIDE m(1987), is a perfect example of this: the songs on the lp are all melodic, nice, rememberable songs, but poor drum machine programming tainted them upon arrival. This is not noticiable however in her breakthrough hit, the title track to the afformentioned TIME AND TIDE lp: Production significantly improved for her 1989 followup, entitled LONDOW, WARSAW, NEW YORK

just got there for the end of the set, but it was AWESOME. when i got there they were in the middle of stolen moments. then they did a song called rio funk. lee was saying how when they recorded it, it was like one of the 1st ever direct to digital albums, and it all had to be mixed live on the spot. then they took the tapes to this like weird lab, where these guys in white lab coats did stuff with the tapes to get it onto disc. he said it was a far cry from the i-pod. lastly they did patrice rushens biggest hit, "forgot me nots" which was a huge it and iconic song. i think i might try n go back sun. for the whole show!

sidewinder, all i have to say is i listened to this one at 8 am on the bus 2 work and on my lunch break and on the way home and it made my day like 400% better. Its top notch quality 80s fusion: smooth jazz if you will, or 80s fusion if you'd rather. 5 out of 5 chewy-stars for sure
