  1. ANDREW HILL IS NOW IN BLUE NOTE HEAVEN
  2. COMPLETELY SUCKS: ANOTHER TOPPER TO A HORRIBLE DAY FOR CHEWY::: I RECOUNT IN OCT. WHEN I SAW HIM HIS MUSIC WAS FANTASTIC BUT ALREADY THEN HIS VOICE WAS COMPLETELY SHOT DUE TO THE LUNG CANCER- I MEAN HE SOUNDED REALLY HORRIBLE HE COULD HARDLY TALK AND I REMEMEBER IT WAS VERY UPSETTING. I KNEW HE WAS DYING THEN AND HE LASTED UNTIL SPRING. ALTHOUGH I AM NOT COMPELETLY OBSESSED W/ HIS ALBUMS I HAVE GREAT RESPECT AND ADMIRATION FOR HIM AND HIS MUSIC AND AM VERY SAD ABOUT IT ALL
  3. cause u know like w/ charles the bird parker- somtimes the ann. just says: whattya wanna blow next bird? and he announces it, but on others the announcer just annouces it. well chewys jazz history question right now is did the bands have to tell the announcer their setlist for the radio spot
  4. clunky- i applaud your extravagant lifestyle where u can buy a machine instead of using fluid + cloth. but frankly even if i had your weath i would still probably wanna buy more records w/ it instead
  5. to make up for his insensitive comments he should finally tour america
  6. uhoh you said big john patton- that means i better put on accent on the blues
  7. so like all the benny with miles i have, hes on bs. clairnet n stuff- why didnt miles let him play his tenor? that would of made bitches brew even better
  8. I'm on my fourth copy of this; mono, stereo, TOCJ, then Mosaic. I got the first one in 1967, at the same time as "Along came John". I've played "Along came John" just a trifle more than "Oh baby", a good bit more than any of the other Pattons. YOU SHOULD PLAY THEM ALL AT ONCE>>>>> I TRIED THAT WITH INVISIBLE TOUCH ONCE, I PUT ON THE LP, CASSETTE, AND CD ALL AT THE SAME TIME- IT WAS KNARLY
  9. who else did he used to play with in LA?
  10. whats this limelight lp of various artists, and its called "soundtrack to...." something or another i cant rcall but the 1st song is the blakey band w/ lee, curtis, john gilmore, et al- and the other songs are by chet and milt jackson, etc....
  11. A LOSS TO WEST COAST JAZZ
  12. jackie gleason was a musical genius. he was like the arranger, behind the arranger: he would be at all the sessions and would be involved with every aspect of the music. he could not read or write music. but he would hum to the arranger, or play even simple melodies on the piano, and the arranger would base the arrengements off of jackies suggestions. he also worked from a technical point of view and pioneered the use of stereo sound when he set up two sepearate orchestras for each channel. the one w/ sitar is called the "now sound" or something like that and its not the best one but its okay. after about 1965 you can see the quality of the capitol records start to decline as they put more money into the beatles. jackie even made a really obscure one w/ him singing and reciting words over the music but that ones one of the obscure later ones. some of the best ones include lonsome echo- where jackie set up an orchestra of mandolins, and got Dali for the artwork THE TORCH WITH THE BLUE FLAME- his best record "OOOOOO!" strings + wordless choir "Afrodesia" - w/ wild bill davis on organ-- very subdued- different than his usual!
  13. is the rest of the album as funky as "jungle strut?
  14. he also has one from the penthouse club in seattle-- have you guys came across a lot of the shows recorded there?
  15. harold land/elmo hope/scotty lafaro/lennie mcbrowne vancouver BC/ @ "the cellar", 1958
  16. n is that just a coincidnce that his last album is called GOODBYE w/ a song w/ that title or did he know it was gonna be his last
  17. oh chewy has said it for years, INFINITY is probably hands down lees best record date ever. although charisma really probably deserves the title, as it has really the quintessential horn line of hank/jackie/lee, they playing on infinity is completely intense
  18. -can you describe that youtube clip w/ words for chewy, i cant do youtube on my computer -and DONT U START GOULD-PIE dont u start U dont know nothing about chewy. chewy dont need no credit card to ride this train. i buy charles the bird parker bootlegs every other week and i dont even need 2 do ebay, just a 5 spot ea. muthafucka, a buck less if i trade 'em back a chick corea record so dont u start - has anyone seen any other hank memorialbiliia (sic): i recall a singned ROLL CALL on ebay, ive posted the jpg here before, also there is a signed card, with many jazz musicans on it, hank included; also cecil payne and like 10 others. have i posted that? what others have we all seen?
  19. was it that he made that funky album with "jungle soul" even though hed been in the slammer since like 1963 or something like that (im sure one of you will kindly point out the exact year and month, which is fine by me) but the point is: DID HE HAVE JAZZ IN PRISON AND JAZZ RECORDS LIKE ART PEPPER DID AND SO HE WAS ALREADY IN TUNE W/ THE NEW, FUNKY SOUNDS HAPPENING ACROSS AMERICA? LETS TALK IN THIS THREAD ABOUT JAZZ IN PRISON
  20. i know i know i know its a little outside of mosaics general perameters/territory but if they did they bobby hackett set surely you would of thunk they'd do the gleason. only a few select of this lps have ever been on cd and the entire collection is one of the last missing great boxed sets yet to be put on the market, etc this would prob. be one of their larger sets i dunno 12 cds, maybe a few more i dont need the set cause i have mono and stereo copies of all of them (even the late-period one from '69 w/ sitars n shit and they play 'hey jude') but for those who would like the music on cd boxed set format the boxed set would really fill in a gap
  21. my new philosophy: why listen to jimmy smith when you can listen to BJP instead?
  22. IF I WAS THE CLUB OWNER I WOULD OF GIVEN HANK ALL MY BANK ACCT. BOOKS AND LET HIM GIVE **ME** BACK THE AMOUNT OF MONEY HE THOUGHT **I'D** DESERVE
  23. did anyone hear the racist comments Manfred Eicher made one the radio last night?
  24. have there been a lot of recordings from Dantes-- i know of the art pepper one, the warne/art one and some warne solo stuff from the 80s but besides all that and the above mentioned one is there a lot of west coast jazz recorded there?
