All of the "Capitol Vault Series" (Mosaic and Mosaic Selects), the Clef/Verve Basie Mosaic, the Riverside Monk box, a lot of other box sets, and many new releases. I am not subscribed to a streaming service, but I am already paying for Hoopla through taxes so I might as well use it.

  15. This Friday, June 5th (from midnight to midnight PDT), we’re once again waiving our revenue share for all sales on Bandcamp to support artists impacted by Covid-19. We’ve put together a list of artists and labels preparing special releases for Friday, including those donating their share to organizations in support of racial justice and change. In addition, on Friday, June 19th, we’re donating 100% of our share of sales to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, a racial justice organization with a long history of effectively enacting change through litigation, advocacy, and public education. Please read our statement here.
  16. Aerophonic is currently running a sale offering 7 titles on cd for $70 (or 5 cds and a t-shirt) or 10 downloads for $70.
  17. The Jazz Gallery has been posting concerts since it has been closed due to the COVID-19 situation. It posted a piano trio concert (audio only) from earlier this year featuring Aaron Parks/Matt Brewer/Craig Weinrib. I attended one of the sets. Highly recommended.
  18. AUM Fidelity is releasing at 10-cd William Parker box this summer. A 10-track sampler of a track from each cd is now available on Bandcamp.
  19. I have been listening to the Haydn string quartets lately more than anything else. I never paid much attention to them. I read an informative and concise article years ago about the string quartet repertoire by David Rounds. He ranks Haydn's and Shostakovich's cycles to be the greatest cycles after Beethoven. He places Bartok's cycle just after Haydn and Shostakovich. At the time, I listened to a few of Haydn's quartets and did not understand why he ranked them so highly. The lightbulb went on recently. Rounds was right. They are really great. I disagree with Rounds assessment that Opus 22 and Opus 33 are not masterpieces, but that Haydn was "still learning." To my ears all of them from Opus 20 to Opus 77 are masterpieces. How is the sound on the Schneider set?

    Anthony Braxton

New Braxton release. Eight cd box of duos with Eugene Chadbourne.
  21. I prefer cd also, but I do not mind downloading from Bandcamp. It offers cd quality and better files in a variety of "lossless" formats. I will not purchase a "lossy" download. Some labels, like Biophilia, only offer downloads because of the negative environmental impact of cds. There is also some interesting out-of-print material on Bandcamp. I do not subscribe to a streaming service because I feel that they are unfair to the artists. It is my understanding that Bandcamp provides the artists with a much better deal. On the first Fridays of June and July, Bandcamp will be waiving its revenue share and giving the artists/labels 100% of the revenue from purchases due to the crisis being experienced by artists who cannot generate revenue performing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bandcamp also waived revenue in March and May (I am not sure about April) . Many labels in turn provided and are providing the artists with 100% of the revenue paid to the label by Bandcamp for material purchased during the revenue waiver days. It is likely that the Colligan album was released to take advantage of the Bandcamp waiver of its revenue share. Some artists have reported making more money on Bandcamp during its last revenue waiver day than they have made over the entire existence of Spotify. I will probably purchase the Colligan release and a few other things during the next Bandcamp revenue waiver on June 5.
  22. The samples sound good. I am liking Colligan on the rhodes on this.
  23. Was the Abbey Lincoln released with the last batch of Enja titles? It is not available at CDJapan.
