  1. I've figured that out a long time ago !!!
  2. Thing is that boards or forums are so 2003...
  3. Attending it tonight The line up here consists of Wayne Shorter Quartet with Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Brian Blade, Joe Lovano and Dave Douglas Quintet: Sound Prints Featuring: Lawrence Fields, Linda Oh and Joey Baron And ACS: Allen, Carrington, Spalding
  4. I've noticed that people who tend to clap a lot are people are either trying to convince themselves that what they hear is actually good or they actually enjoy listening themselves to applaud than actually listening to the freakin' music. It happens quite often when the crowd consists of people that we usually never see at jazz concerts (In Montreal it is always the same hundred people that we get to see at jazz gigs). Regarding the improv, I've noticed it too , during the Suoni which mostly offers Free jazz or improv, peopletend to listen quietly and clap when the tune ends Among the most clap happy are probably Classical music fans, as soon as someone plays in a loud fashion like Denis Matsuev tends to do you can bet it's gonna end in a standing ovation, wonder why those people don't attend speed metal concerts ?
  5. Enjoyed it, but I feel QT is pastiching himself a bit too much, this film mirrors quite a lot IB, a few scenes are reminiscent of Basterds , except that the Germans are good guys in this one. If you dig Western Spaghettis you'll have a kick watching it. My two tops QT remain Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction., nonetheless a fun film that does not feel you've been sitting for nearly 3 hours.
  6. Found this sucker for 100 $ at a used cd store, except for the solo piano material at the start of the set that didn't do much for yours truly, there was plenty of wonderful music in this set, especially orchestral numbers like Turangalila. Was a bit put off at first by the religiousity of the titles, but once I started listening to the music except for for the pieces with lyrics you quickly forget he was religious zealot and just appreciate the music. To tell you how much I got into this thing I listened to the whole 32 cds in less than 2 weeks, granted the Christmas break helped and did not listen to anything else but still...
  7. Am still gutted by the result in the football (soccer) game, what an heartbreak ...
  8. They call it the Montreal jazz fest because it's the brand name like Montreux gets called the same way. Normand is right unfortunately his opinion relates to about 5 % of the people, the other 95 don't give a damn. This year was really awful in terms of content, if you compare to other years despite having big names who have nothing to do with the music, you were able to build a solid programmation of 2 gigs a day with mostly relevant content , not this year as I ended up with days with little to do Here's a few examples of the people running it not caring about this type of music As invitation series the musicians featured were Stanley Clarke and Tord Gustavsen not exactly the best choices if you want to feature contemporary modern music while working with guys who had a versatile career , it's a personal opinion but can't say that Clarke has been relevant in the last 15 years and Gustavsen hasn't much of a career. Also the Jazz beat series which used to be the biggest series featuring contemporary musicians at the now demolished Spectrum was relegated at 6 pm and in a few gigs were halted after 75 minutes because the venue is used at 10 pm, never mind that tickets were sold around 50 $ for what seems like an opening act. Finally in the post-mortem, none of the organisators bothered to name a jazz act among their favorite moment By the way, regarding the content, compare it to the Ottawa and Vancouver jazz which still lets the music a big part of the process, gotta say if it wasn't for economical reasons (mostly housing costs) I would have rather attended these festivals instead of ours. To use a metaphor, jazz used to be the main passagers of this festival, then we had a bunch of other passengers and now it has been relegated to the back of the bus Final disclosure regarding Guilbeault he started a festival called the Off -festival which used to work in the same dates than the big one a few years ago in retaliation what he felt were slights against local jazz musicians who were a neglected part of the big one , the festival is now taking place in october and is still involved.
  9. Saw her live a few days ago, I'm still in awe, she's a beast on stage, glad to saw her in a relatively small venue (2000 people), she's one hit away from doing only arena shows with price tickets at 150 $ Amazing dancer, she glides all over the place like a movie special effect , great artistic vision and influences (JB, Prince, Outkast etc.) with a very solid ensemble of musicians and back up singers , very good singer with plenty of charisma, the total package...
  10. Seems my chilhood and early teenage years are dissapearing with the passing of The Kid and recently Whitney Houston. Carter was not my favourite, Dawson and Raines were, but he still was the biggest name and the biggest star here, he was on the same level than Guy Lafleur here which is really saying something. I remember when we were playing baseball, we were always imitating him by pulling our slleeves the way he did when we were at the plate Don't know if Montreal will ever have a pro athlete (other than hockey player) that will be as big and popular as Carter was during these years. With his passing, they are very few emotional links remaining between our city and MLB . Thanks for the thrills Kid. My favourite moment from him was at the 1979 all star game By the way, if you wonder why he was such a hit with the fans
  11. My feelings exactly, gotta say despite it all I always had a soft spot for her....
  12. My weirdo of the day is the dude who asked for money if front of the McDonald's near the court of justice wearing a tuque with light up incense sticks on it . Don't know if he wanted to hide his smell or the one coming form the fast food joint
  13. Most of the names you mentionned are part of the festival jazz gigs round, even if the contenst are not that jazzy. If it's any consolation, they announced here Liza Minelli and James Taylor for the upcoming jazz festhere.
  14. Hip hop is defintively an influence on his music, I do like his albums. Must say he has yet to really impress me in a live setting, Lack of focus in his music as he tries too hard to be an entertainer. By the way they poorly translated the name of the festival which is in French Montréal en lumière which i would translate by Montreal in light. Oh I didn't see they mentionned the band he was going to play with at the end of each gig.
  15. Will be there for the one in Montreal, is it solo ?
  16. Might as well put my own, really digged Harold Danko's work on this label
  17. Jazz Loft is having a sale of their recordings, any suggestions among the must have from this label
  18. Bought one from Amazon UK, have yet to listen it all, (huuuuge backlog) for 20 Pounds in november , a bit old school but quite enjoyable so far.
  19. Must be my luck day, only one of the series I haven't bought is the Murray
  20. Interested in the O'Day and the Evans Riverside
  21. Looks a great idea, heck we should do like the NFL qualify half the league for the playoffs and create mini playoffs Seriously I like thie tie-break idea.
