  1. Some odd stuff that they consider "fads." Barbie Dolls, for example. Only if you consider a fad lasting nearly 50 years.
  2. I know Mike's joking about the Mosaic wedding registry (not that it isn't a great idea), but I did pretty well last X-mas after leaving a couple of Mosaic catalogs with my mom and sister... with a few items circled of course.
  3. Listening to this now for the first time. I'm a huge Haden fan, but run hot-and-cold on Carla Bley (though I've always found her LMO work superior). First impression of the album is great. Re: Jim's initial comments, since I'm not familiar with either Cheek or Malby (the two tenors) can you point out who solos on which tracks - or otherwise how to distinguish between them?
  4. I can't help buy think what the Ken Burns version of this might have looked like.
  5. Effron's hero-worshipping was funnier...
  6. It would be worth it if only to yell out, "Play Freebird!"
  7. Is it just me, or does giving meth to a guy who's "dangerous and crazy" not sound like a good idea? But then it worked, so what the hell do I know...
  8. Tivo'd but haven't watched it yet, so maybe it's brought up, but did Dylan actually "turn his back" on his family or merely keep that aspect of his life private by never really mentioning them?
  9. Who was it that called Sanborn and Botti "jazz giants" anyway? As my dear mum always told me, "consider the source."
  10. From what I've read, the doc itself is the same, but the bonus features include several unedited perfrmances.
  11. Beyond that, it really does no good to "blame" anyone for cutting Woody and replacing him, with Wynton or anyone else. It's the music business, and it all comes down to sales. Tapscott's right. We can praise Woody all we want to - and we should - for sticking to his artistic guns and not "selling out" when much of the jazz world was going pop or disco. But at the same time, we can't blame the record companies - Satan spawn or not - for cutting an artist whose artistic integrity gets in the way of his commercial acceptance. He did five albums for Columbia, which ain't too shabby...
  12. Not to mention Branford, telling a first person account of his encounter with Woody - an account that jibes with what many others have said about Woody's let's-leave-it-as-eccentric personality. It didn't read to me that Branford was saying that to trash Woody, but someone did ask him if he had any stories to tell... That said, I agree that many of the posters on that site (Branford's forum?) sound like idiots.
  13. Fuck! Nothing personal guys, but i'm in D.C. next week. So I'll be missing you up and down the Eastern seaboard...

  15. Looks like I'm tagging along with my wife as she's attending some legal conference in our nation's capitol next week (Oct. 6-9 or so), so I'm looking for any tips on good jazz shows, museum exhibits, or used record/CD stores that I should check out. I know we have some D.C. locals on the board, so please point me in the right direction. And if any of you guys are free for a lunch or a show, let me know - I'm game to be entertained. Haven't been to D.C. in about a decade, so I'm looking forward to the mini-vacation.
  16. So far it still redirects to the Verve site...
  17. Ray, I'll get McPhee. I'll send you an e-mail with my address. Thanks. ← David - I just saw this now but don't think I ever received an e-mail from you. Were you still interested in the McPhee?
  18. Miles shouldn't be in the R&R HOF any more than Steely Dan should be in a Jazz HOF. Even if one considered Bitches Brew and Jack Johnson as "rock," two albums shouldn't be enough to get someone a HOF plaque.
  19. It's been getting terrific word-of-mouth for months now. They expect it will be a hit, but audiences can be fickle. Also, my bro-in-law works on the show and he says it's pretty funny.
  20. Are they aware of the erect pink bunny?
  21. Me neither - are you sure he's an Israeli? Anyway you are all invited to listen to some Israeli Jazz on my site (on my label) ← No, I'm not. Actually, Eldad lives just a few doors away from me here in L.A., but I know that he's spent time in Israel and Northern Africa (a musical sabatical I believe), so i thought that you might have heard of him.
  22. I've got a flyer for this somewhere, but can't find any on-line link. Details?
  23. Ominous FB. Hope he's okay.
  24. The Self Righteous Brothers Rocky Horror Chili Peppers Charles Dingus (boo!) Kamper Van Halen Maude Squad Jehovah's Witness Rejection Program Fart Blakey & The Gas Messengers (boo!) Richard Heck Sly & The Family Stallone Marquis de Sade (pronounced "Sharday")
  25. A long shot, but any of you guys familiar with the vibist Eldad Tarmu?
