  1. I dunno. I can understand the banning of secular music - not just jazz - in church. That just seems wrong. Like booking Kenny G into Birdland, another sacred institution...

    Gato Barbieri

Is Jazz Kat old enough for "Last Tango in Paris?"
  3. Looks to be a fine set. I have a lot of it already though...
  4. David Byrne's "Music for the Knee Plays" Still not on CD!

  6. That's correct - the coffee was significantly hotter than it should have been and the woman was seriously burned. This is one of those cases were the media reports only part of the story and/or the public only gloms on to the part that they want to hear - namely the part assuming that the woman was an idiot. In addition, iirc, the huge judgement (that led to much of the publicity) was subsequently greatly reduced by the trial judge.
  7. Great stuff, Chris!
  8. Now there's an idea for a flick: Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn and Serge Chaloff solve crimes during the day and play jazz at night! And no one suspects a thing... ← Actually it would be more likely for them to commit crimes during the day and play jazz at night. ← Doesn't matter, so long as their sidekick's a monkey!

  10. Bought an extra copy from BMG by mistake. This is the long box version and looks identical to the retail version. Still sealed. Six discs. Only $35 inc. shipping (U.S.). You can't beat that!
  11. Just checking in to say that I've been spinning disc 1 all week in my office, with disc 2 playing in the car. Some really nice stuff here; i'm enjoying the discs a bunch. But damn, I'm stumped. I recognize a few tunes, but have no good guesses in mind for artists. Hope to post some answers this weekend. Thanks again, Marty!
  12. No guessing involved, but interesting pics nonetheless... http://www.eatliver.com/celebrities-kids/index.html
  13. Those sound like titles from that "contractual" Van Morrison album... 19 Twist and Shake Morrison 1:16 20 Shake and Roll Morrison 0:56 21 Stomp and Scream Morrison 1:12 22 Scream and Holler Morrison 1:12 23 Jump and Thump Morrison 1:07 24 Drivin Wheel Morrison 1:11 25 Just Ball Morrison 0:58 26 Shake It Mable Morrison 1:10 27 Hold on George Morrison 1:28 28 The Big Royalty Check Morrison 1:35 29 Ring Worm Morrison 1:30 30 Savoy Hollywood Morrison 1:00 31 Freaky If You Got This Far Morrison 1:03 32 Up Your Mind Morrison 1:11 33 Thirty Two Morrison 0:58 34 All the Bits Morrison 0:53 35 You Say France and I Whistle Morrison 0:52 36 Blow in Your Nose Morrison 1:23 37 Nose in Your Blow Morrison 1:01 etc...
  14. That Ory's gonna be a rare (and expensive!) mofo someday. I found a loose copy a while ago - very cheap! - and it's really not my cuppa otherwise I'd buy another set. Some fine music on it, but a little of that trad/dixie stuff goes a long way for me. I really like the two Teagarden Mosaics I have, but the Ory didn't impress me in the same way. And there're too many other Mosaic I need to have...
  15. This was included in a 3 disc set titled Scratching the Seventies. Others included are Scraps, Dreams, Roba and The Owl. ← Didn't realize the set included all the music from the Saravah albums. Starting to search around for a copy! Thanks for showing the right direction! Once more... ← Dusty Groove carries it for $25. They're temporarily out of stock right now, though. ← Also available on emusic...
  16. I never thought that this one would be a problem: sell and sale. As in, "Come check out my Ebay sell." I see that all the time. WTF???
  17. Agree 100%.
  18. I'd be very curious how that Short Stops material sounds on this set. IIRC, most of those early (U.S.) Bluebird CDs were no-noised to death. Hopefully Proper ripped it off of a French issue or something... -_-
  19. RDK

    proper reissues

Now why'd he go and do that??? I didn't agree with everything, but he made some good points and furthered the discussion. I can only conclude that he finally listened to a Proper Box and had a change-of-heart about them...
  20. Well, if the material is in the Public Domain there's nothing illegal about it. There's a lot that's unethical about it and otherwise wrong, but nothing technically illegal. And yes, no different from my burning a CDR for you of PD material. Another question: is it also wrong for JSP to put out Louis Armstrong compilations drawn from old 78s? Except for the passage of time, those 78s could be considered "ripped off" materials as well. Is using a 78 (and "remastering it" for CD) any different than using an existing LP or CD pressing and "remastering it" for another CD? It's funny how people will defend labels like JSP or Chronological Classics for what they're doing - they use the 50 year EU PD rules to their advantage too - but criticize Proper and so many other labels for doing the exact same thing.
  21. I know i shouldn't encourage such silliness, but nevertheless...
  22. I'm a big fan of the Mosaic box - it's one of my favorites - so I'd be interested in this Proper set if it's the only place this material is available. I've actually found the Proper sets to sound okay, though obviously their sources are varied. And you can't beat the price unless Allen "pays forward" his gift...
  23. I always dug the name of that burger joint up in Sacremento: The Ground Cow. Sorta says it all...
  24. I'm sorry, but there's nothing "accidental" about having sex with a horse...
