  1. I agree that the defective discs should be replaced, but I think it's unfair to put the burden on Mosaic if we didn't purchase the set from them at their price. I wouldn't think of asking them to replace it anymore then I'd ask them to replace a defective used disc or one bought new/hot/boxless from an Ebay vender.
  2. "Wonky" sound or not, this is a wonderful set. I can't imagine anyone not liking it. Anyone who dislikes it has no soul and is dead to me...
  3. funniest. smiley. ever.
  4. I can't find where the sound gets 'wonky.' I've yet to learn how & where McMaster compromised Turrentine's sound. Me either. I listended to Discs 1 and 2 over the weekend and couldn't notice anything bad or peculiar. The first two discs sound very "bright" to me, though whether due to the mastering or the original recording I don't know. The other discs sound much better, which is partly why the first two stand out. I forget who it was who first raised this issue on the ol' BN board, but after comparing the first two discs with the others I had to agree. But as they say, your mileage may vary...
  5. As someone who makes a living both reading and writing, I'll add that writing - creative or otherwise - is often a balance between artistry and clarity. Rules are rules, but they can (and often should) be broken. Now I love the way Clem strings his words/thoughts together - very creative, dude! - but clarity is not exactly his thing (in my humble, narrow-minded opinion at least). A mainstream music review (again, imho) should arguably err on the side of clarity, but that said I don't generally give a fuck about the technicalities of proper punctuation unless it makes reading the piece harder than it has to be.
  6. $130 is a steal - if I knew German and saw this I would have outbid you!
  7. Good job, Jim! I've gotta get that Henderson disc one of these days...
  8. "Gaydar" isn't offensive at all... at least among my circle of gay friends... though I'm sure there are some out there, somewhere, who would be offended by it. Honestly - and again, among my circle of very gay and very out and very liberal gay friends - I'd be hard-pressed to use the word "gay" as a put-down in any way ("that is so gay") that would offend them. Most would probably laugh and agree. But as they say, your mileage will vary...
  9. Interesting. Rhino says they're sold out. (Also sold out already is the Aretha Franklin-King Curtis set!)
  10. But was Kenny born that way or is happy 'cause of the money?
  11. That's fuckin' BRILLIANT!! How do they do that?
  12. Not cool, my friend. (Just in case any overworked prostitutes are reading this.) Good grief. Yet again, Tony's sucking up to the overworked prostitute contingent...
  13. Bless you guys for turning such obvious spam into such an entertaining and nostalgic thread.
  14. I heard just the tail end of the Grimes piece as I was driving home tonight. The entire week of jazz stories should be available on-line...
  15. Glad to hear they've added something. The original announcement was for historically accurate LP-repro versions. Now a poster of that cover is added value for sure...
  16. Or were you commenting on the cover? In which case:
  17. Do i understand correctly that these HA albums are being released w/o any bonus tracks? IIRC, that would mean that they're only about 25-30 minutes long. Not that that's really an issue if I cared about the music, but I think I'll stick with the LPs. I wonder if I can find any at the thrift store...
  18. Y'know, I d/l'ed this from emusic a long while ago and have never gotten around to listening to it. Think I'll address that lapse of judgement this week...
  19. My thought exactly! (And certainly the winner by yearly percentage)
  20. Heard this on NPR last night... http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4608713 The on-air piece featured Tom Evered of Blue Note talking about getting back royalties to Jutta Hipp...
  21. Don't be bummed, Chuck... Charlie has one too... http://home.elp.rr.com/valdes/discgrph.htm
  22. Almost certainly what has happened. They sold a bunch, pressed another batch (or maybe, unlike Mosaic, they ordered more than a single "batch" in the first place), then decided to purge the warehouse. Happens all the time. Doesn't mean it's a cutout or now oop, but when this "discounted" batch is sold out from the Amazon sellers it will likely be back at full price from the Euro distributers.
  23. You didn't happen to buy this set used from or loan it to Aric by any chance?
  24. Another thing - possibly a "clue" - at least when it comes to partial Mosaic sets. I've noticed with the partials that there's often a defect with the packaging: cracked jewel cases, miscut covers, etc. (in addition to, uh, not having all the discs included). I've often thought that these partials were "rejects" unfit for sale through regular channels. That, of course, doesn't explain the Selects.
