I've often avoided buying anything from the budget "Laserlight" label since they always seemed like such cheap (bootlegged or radio-broadcasted) recordings, but here and there I see some that look very interesting. I broke down and bought a live Getz recording from 1969 that's pretty darn good and now I'm wondering if I've been overlooking some other diamonds-in-the-rough. Laserlight seems to be handling the LRC catalog, but I'm not sure what recordings these are and if they're "official" or not. I know Lester from Solid State, but that catalog is now owned by Cap/EMI. I assume the LRC label came later. Are these "legit" recordings or is something fishy going on? And why so cheap? Should I feel guilty for buying any more of these or are there better sources for the same recordings? What's the scoop?

A collaboration with Hendrix? The soundtrack for "Last Tango in Paris?" Some excrutiating disco-jazz albums in the late-70s? The sax solo on the Stones' "Waiting for a Friend?" Musical Director for Jay Leno?

No disrespect, but this is the sort of elitism that I feel hurts our cause. Rather than think that the vast majority of people out there are "depraved" idiots who don't understand the superiority of jazz music, I prefer to think of jazz as a specialized - even special - niche that only a few seem to really "get" and appreciate. "Popular taste" is exactly what it is - a common ground enjoyed by the masses - not something to be disparaged. And certainly not something to be bummed about.

I thought you guys were liberals!

On a similar path to what Pharoah took and where he's at now?

Silly question, "do you wish jazz sold more?" Would you really want jazz to be as popular as "pop" music? Do we really want to spend hours waiting in line or dialing Ticketmaster in order to see James Carter or Brubeck or Benny Golson play in a 20,000 seat sports arena?

Finally saw this yesterday and this comment pretty much echoes my own feelings. I was very impressed at how faithful the film was to the comic book, but it also emphasized that, despite some similaritties, there are significant differences between the comic book and motion picture mediums and that it's not so simple for one to work as the other. I found that the style and presentation overshadowed all other aspects of the production, making the whole piece seem rather gimmicky. That said, I was also greatly enamored of the style, which was fresh and orginal and really captured the feel of Frank's work - which, ironically enough, was meant to be purely cinematic. I'm glad they did it this way and pulled it off as well as they did, but I'm also glad that not all movies are done in this fashion... I haven't read much about this yet, but does anyone know what section Tarantino directed? I have my suspicions...

Geez, guys, it's not as if Pavement is the Beatles or Shania Twain or Lloyd Webber. There are probably like six Pavement fans out there who might buy this because of the Pavement connection. It's hardly a sell-out if that's what you're implying...

Shane - I've no problem logging in to the new site, but I haven't received a single e-mail from them about any of this...

Earth's Oldest Known Object on Display

I thought it but I wasn't gonna say it! -
Not worth it for an Applause...

None of this stuff bothers me so long as they don't fuck up the song with new lyrics (which they sometimes do). I'd rather hear a classic song than some insipid jingle, and I'm glad to see the artist get some attention and money.

Judge Allows Past Jackson Allegations
RDK replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I heard about this testimony earlier, but hadn't read the details. As to the security guard, how does one possibly *lose* a wrongful termination lawsuit if one knows about such things as Jackson's apparent pedophilia? I would have thought that they'd pay him a bunch either to keep his job or stay quiet... -
Uh, okay - you win, Jim. I'm not gonna touch that one with a ten foot, uh...

Wouldn't that eliminate 92.2% of this board? Exactly! So what, any subject broached on another board - AAJ, JC, etc. - is off-limits here? I've never read rmb.

Well, certainly the ease with which one can "trade" such material has improved by "instanet" technology, but this is really nothing that hasn't been going on for decades in the "collectors" circles. It seems to me that bit-torrenting has leveled the playing field more than a little and opened up some of this rare material - that, in most cases, will never see a legit release - to those fans who are less "connected." I often sensed a certain, let's say elitism among some traders who would boldly boast about all the rare shows they've heard but were unwilling to "share" with anyone unless one could deliver something equally rare in return. Fair enough, I guess, but sites like STG and Easytree enabled a certain egalitarianism that helped level the playing field. "Sharing" was indeed the name of the game there, evinced by the fact that the most hated ones of all were not the RIAA but those who actually sold the bootlegged material (and like Michael, I'm fully aware that most of this material wasn't strictly legal). EZT may be dead, but another site will undoubtedly rise up in its place. It may be a bit harder to share for a while, but one way or another it will go on. Meanwhile, the only ones who will be profitting are those who sell the bootlegged CDs on Ebay or on street corners.

This is still available from me... Hamiet Bluiett "Making Whoopie" (NKC tribute) Mappleshade (gone) -
Newk - I'm envious. I was hoping to catch that show, but that early start time kills me. I caught the Moncur show last month, but it's over an hour away with rush hour traffic and I have to cut out of work early for it. I'm glad to hear it was great, but almost wished it sucked if you know what I mean. Can't say I'm too familiar with Harper, but I dig what I've heard of Cyrille and the other guys ain't bad either. Do you who's next at Clairemont?

Oh sure. If he's so "smart" why couldn't he have warned us about Che?

What films this summer are you looking forward to?
RDK replied to jazzbo's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I'm a huge FF fan, but from everything I've seen and heard I'm expecting Fantastic Four to be a great disappointment. I'm cautiously optimistic about Batman, but that could be very problematic as well. War of the Worlds could be great, but I've heard/seen so little about it - though some of the exterior sets I've seen here on the lot have looked impressive. (A digression: a month or so ago, Tom Cruise set up a little Scientology booth outside one of the stages - they were offering coffee and snacks to lure the unsuspecting in.) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory looks godawful, but it's Tim Burton so it should do well. I'm personally looking forward to Into The Blue... -
I took the test again, more honestly this time, and it said I should have been dead five years ago!

That's true! We haven't actually met, but we do know some of the same people here in town.
