Listening to this now in fact. Very good sound too. I assume this was a radio broadcast?

Don't let the format confuse you. The CD side is just like a CD. The DVD side is just like a DVD, with a video but also the full music album in surround sound. Given that you can pick this up for $12.99 (it was even $9.99 at Circuit City last week), you can consider the entire DVD side a free bonus. I really don't understand the complaints about the DualDisc format. It's played on at least five players I've tried it on - CD player, DVD player, boombox, computer, car - with no problems. Obviously some people are having bad luck playing the disc (sorry, Greg), but these cases seem relatively few. If you do have problems playing it in your car (for example) you can always burn it as a CD-R.

I think we can all agree that the issue is complicated and colored shades of gray. We also need to clarify just what we mean by "rip-off" as there are two different definitions going here: rip-off masterings (the Uptown Mingus, for example) and "bootleg" releases that fail to pay the rights holders - which can be different from country to country. Alan's point about ripping off a project "song by song" is valid - essentially the Uptown Mingus case - and that truly sucks. But what variations in packaging/sequencing can you have when a label reissues a "complete" set by a particular artist? I've noticed that some of the Definitive reissues differ from the "more legit" Mosaic or otherwise sets by following the same chronological sequence but omitting any alternate takes - which is preferable to some listeners. And what do you do when a "rip-off" label actually improves the sound of what they're ripping off, as some believe is the case with the (Definitive?) Benny Goodman set, that some feel is better than the "official" Columbia release? It's pretty safe to say that no label will ever release another 18-disc Nat Cole set, like the Mosaic box. So is it that wrong for a Euro label - respecting their own copyright laws - to reissue six 3-disc sets of NKC? Sure sounds preferable to me than spending $600+ to an Ebay seller; none of that money will go to the artist either. Lots of questions and moral/ethical/legal concerns, but no easy answers. And the digital age has only complicated things.

Well, I suppose it depends on whether or not one likes Springsteen. I do, and I think the album is pretty terrific on just a few listens and seeing him live on Monday night. It's a very good album - maybe great - though closer to Tom Joad than anything else in his catalog. (I think I already like it more than Joad.)

There are instances, though, where some of these "rip-off" labels are the only ones even offering this material in the U.S.

Got the discs today, Tom. Should burn em tonight and/or tomorrow and get them out in a day or two. -
Haven't had any problems yet with the Dual Disc format. Plays in all CD/DVD players that I've tried.

Dude got a get-out-of-jail free card handed to him on a silver platter. He can walk away from this one and no one in the world would blame him. I agree about the "get out of jail free" card, but the guy should go through with it and save it for after the marrige. Can you image the possibilities? Her: "You're having an affair with your secretary? How could you!" Him: "At least I didn't fake my own kidnapping." Her: "You want me to do what to you where?" Him: "So what exactly did those fake kidnappers do to you anyway?" Her: "But honey, a station wagon would be so much more practical than a new sports car." Him: "You faked your own kidnapping. I want a sports car. Nuff said." -
More Rodney! Oh, when I was a kid, I was ugly. When I was born, the doctor smacked my mother! I was an ugly kid. My old man took me to the circus; we went to see the freaks. The owner looked at me, he said, "Get the kid out. He's distracting from the show!" And I was an ugly kid. Everytime my old man wanted sex, my mother showed him my picture. I mean, ugly. My mother breastfed me through a straw.

On the other hand... If you wanna be happy For the rest of your life, Never make a pretty woman your wife, So from my personal point of view, Get an ugly girl to marry you. A pretty woman makes her husband look small And very often causes his downfall. As soon as he marries her Then she starts to do The things that will break his heart. But if you make an ugly woman your wife, You'll be happy for the rest of your life, An ugly woman cooks her meals on time, She'll always give you peace of mind. Don't let your friends say You have no taste, Go ahead and marry anyway, Though her face is ugly, Her eyes don't match, Take it from me she's a better catch.

Attractive children get treated no differently than pretty women or handsome men. I'm surprised it took a research study to verify this...

Meh. Okay film; fun in spots but also boring in places. Can't touch the original BBC radio program circa 1980 - still the best version of Hitchhikers' Guide out there. I'm really curious what those who aren't familiar with the book/radio/TV show think of the flick. I'm glad to hear that some "newbies" dig it, but like Ebert I fear it's too much of an in-joke. I liked that they used "muppets" for the creatures rather than CGI'ing all of them. Gave the film a fun/fresh/retro look; not as over-the-top with SFX as one might expect.

Then why do you bother reading and crapping all over this thread? **** I was less shocked the other night that Constantine was booted than that Scott was in the top 3. I can't stand the guy and can't understand who is voting for him. They don't let guys in prison use the phone do they?

I'd be grinning like that too if I were dating Katie...

No, not all Chuck. Just commenting on a record company choosing to release an LP dub instead of tracking down an original (even copy) tape directly from the source. That, and a company losing the tapes in the first place. Of course they should pay you for their use. The whole thing just sounds like some burocratic cluster-fuck...

Geez, Chris, I hope you're still in Phoenix come June. I may be out that way on a short vacation and was hoping to hook up with somebody I know in that barren state...

Do the tapes sound better than the LPs? Would you loan them out if they asked you?

Are we seeing the same things? Where on that page does one even find the "tubgirl" link? (It's kinda a rhetorical question now since I already googled tubgirl and will be forever sorry that i did... ) I've seeing gooey colors and monkey-babies and hearing sappy muzak...

Ah dumb felons. This reminds me of something that happened to a buddy of mine this past weekend. His car was parked outside his apartment and some idiot smashed into it and drove off - an obvious hit-and-run. Well, the crash tore the bumber off my friend's car. But it also tore off the license plate of the car that hit his... making it rather easy for the cops to track him down. -
