  1. Well, Anchorman is hilarious; K & S much less so (pretty bad actually). Elf was a surprising delight.
  2. I think QT only directed the short section *in the car*
  3. http://stuffo.howstuffworks.com/wotw-videos.htm Man, their timing sucks!
  4. No big surprise there. That pretty much describes Frank Miller to a T. ← Frank Miller? Awful? I don't think I've ever heard anyone ever say that before...
  5. Do. Not. Miss. Him. 'nuff said.
  6. "The Complete Tyrone Washington Train Wreck Sessions?"
  7. The East Coast numbers are better than expected and I hear this might make $45M... just for today.
  8. Digging it so far, Jim. But what's the difference between "Standard" and "Linear +"? They both look the same to me.
  9. Auditioning for the Baja Marimba Band. ← One needs to know that rather obscure reference (thanks Chuck!), but if one does that's really funny!
  10. And I'm seeing squares where there weren't any before (except for Chuck)
  11. New this week along with this one... http://www.emusic.com/album/10859/10859859.html Be careful not to confuse the two...
  12. Good for her! (Not the "knocked up" part, but the standing up for herself part.)
  13. You guys must have missed this one... http://cdbaby.com/cd/maryscunt
  14. I like Vonzell, too, but I think she's going home tonight. Bo's the winner after last night's performances.
  15. Oh man. Such sad news. That Batman TV show was such an important part of my youth. RIP Frank...
  16. That's the only problem I've had with the Jarrett Trio over the past 20 years or so. It's all exceptional music, but the albums do tend to blur together. Fortunately it's an embarrassment of riches, however, and as much as I tell myself to stop buying them and try something/someone else, I keep coming back to Jarrett. I'm actually looking forward to this one, though, because it is a solo set and (so I've read) structured somewhat differently from his set-long improvizations of the past.
  17. The JPN-only "In Japan" is a particular favorite of mine, including all periods of Sonny.

    Lou Donaldson

up A credited guest solo on a Doors, Stones, or Steely Dan album?
  19. Geez, guys, Breezin' was almost 30 years ago. He went "pop" (and I won't call it the dark side either) a long time ago and never looked back. I wouldn't even say that there are "two sides" to him anymore. Now I like Breezin and a few of his other pop-jazz albums, but to answer the spirit of the thread I'd put his turning point much further back to some of those CTI/A&M albums. Can't blame him for going for the green, but I wish he'd put something more straightforward out as well - dude can play.

    Bob Dorough

Thanks for the heads-up on this disc. Saw Dorough at Iridium the last time i was in NYC and he puts on a fun show. Gonna have to grab this one...
  21. Don't get me wrong - I have negative comments about the new film as well, but I'd rather wait to air them until after a few of you have seen it later this week. I'd hate to impart any biases and possibly ruin your enjoyment of the flick. Overall, I think it's quite good and would prefer to stay positive for now...
  22. How 'bout... of those that I've heard, working in the context of the film, that made me go, "hmm, that's a pretty good score." I remember Catch Me if You Can being good, but until you just mentioned it I forgot that Johnny Williams did it. I don't listen to too many soundtrack CDs these days, so my comments are only in relation to how it works in support of the picture.
  23. One other thing: the best John Williams score in quite some time.
  24. No, of course not... it's just that it was SO bad in the first two prequels that I had a hard time enjoying the "spectacle" aspects. Gotcha. I was playing Phantom Menace for the kids a few weeks ago and I had forgotten just how awful parts of that film are. The kid who plays young Anakin is embarrassingly bad, and both Jar-Jar and Watto are undermined by their goofy voices. It really ruined the film for me, despite some impressive action set-pieces. Might be, but the sequence is intercut with some other stuff, so it's not like we actually see them spar for that long. Seriously, there are some fairly long stretches of Sith that are dialogue free (or at least minimal), so that's a plus right there. There are some talky scenes as well, mostly of exposition and politics. There's an incredible (and dark) section towards the end that's almost operatic in style - reminded me of The Godfather of all things. But then there's the "lovey-dovey" stuff between Anakin and Amedala...
  25. Anyone going to see Star Wars for the dialogue is missing the point...
