Let's Reopen Old Wounds!
RDK replied to JSngry's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Last time I checked none of those people were recording for Blue Note. But to answer Bill's question: yes, there was criticism of them (or at least of Herbie's duet with Xtina). But none of them (with far more legit jazz credentials than Norah, whom I like btw) had anywhere close to Jones' instant success. And despite what you may think - or were told - the "objections" to Norah on the BN board were by no means unanimous. -
Sounds like some of you haven't seen the show since the 70s! Lots of good musical acts since then. Beck did a great couple of numbers last year; the show turned me on to Corine Bailey Rae, for which I am grateful; a recent appearance by U2 (maybe 2-3 years ago) proved just how big a star Bono is; Scissor Sisters was terrific, as was Neil Young doing "It's a Dream." And who can forget Sinead O'Connor tearing up a photo of the Pope?

Rightly or wrongly (and I agree with much of the rest of your comments), but if you think copyright will be changed to only 9 years you are incredibly naive.

Al is a rock (but the radio rolled me)!

I'm getting pretty much every box set they have (well, not quite) and I have the average cost/CD (inc. shipping) down to $1.62!
-
Worked for me - just ordered a bunch! A few people on the Hoffman board reported getting this deal a few weeks ago, but it didn't work for most of us. Must be some "random" thing.

do they have one of these with johnny nash doin' the lickin'? I'd prefer her...

Just had a quick listen to both, but I much prefer the Waldron/Roach to the Waldron/Lacy. For one thing, I'm not the biggest of Steve Lacy fans, but I also have 5 or 6 other Waldron/Lacy duet discs, so this just adds one more to the stack and, though fine, it's not as unique. The disc (actually 2, a nearly 2-hour live concert) with Roach is much better, I think, and also features a few solo piano numbers. The music isn't too far "out" if that's a concern for you; much of it is quite lovely, with Roach seeming lighter-than-usual on the drums. Sound is very good for a live set, though sans bass and with Roach emphasizing the cymbals there's not much low end to speak of. Don't remember any long drum solos, but I did only give it a cursory listen. Haven't see any Slam discs before, but these were shipped without jewel cases but with inserts that could be placed in jewel cases. Not exactly slick in the art department - and no notes - but for $20 for the three discs it's certainly worth it. I doubt distribution on these is good, so Jazz Loft might be your only option for these imports.

Put me in the "we have a chatroom?" camp. Actually, it doesn't seem to work for me so I've never visited. But it's a good question: is there a scheduled time for chats?

Foghorn Leghorn? I don't get it.

Just received this in the mail minutes ago; will report back later.

Great link, Chris - thanks!

Preparing for exile in what could be a hostile land
RDK replied to pollock's topic in Forums Discussion
No, not at all. Just getting a feel for the place. Well, feel your way over to the fridge then and get me a beer. I thought that was your girlfriend's job. -
At best he's half the player Kirk is. This could be debated, but I'm not going to give the board any bait with this one. I will say Roland wishes he was half the composer Shorter was I do know that. Bullshit! Total bullshit!!!!! It's a j-o-k-e... Music isn't a boxing match or a horse race. Last I checked there weren't "winners" and "losers." Except for Duke, the undisputed King of the Universe.

Have their been any studies linking the rise in popularity of smooth jazz/instrumental pop with an increase in elevators and dental offices?
-
Yeah, sorry to say, but this can be a very inhospitable place sometimes if you're a newcomer or a conservative. More than a few have been driven away. You seem to have gotten off on the wrong foot around here, and that brings out the sharks.

Thanks for bumping this - I will try to be there.

LF: Windows Vista Experiences, Pro Or Con
RDK replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My wife was given a new PC with Vista, but it only had half a gig of RAM. Ran absurdly slowly. It never should have been (and isn't recomended to be) configured that way. I had an extra gig lying around and replaced the memory. It ran okay on just 1 gig; it should sing with 2-4. From everything i've read/heard, Vista should be superior to XP provided that your system has enough memory to support it. I wouldn't waste time and money upgrading from XP, but on a new system I'd definitely go with Vista. I've also heard a new Vista service pack is due out soon, which should help with any current "problems." -
Storyville cds on sale for $5.98 at daedalus music!
RDK replied to Jazztropic's topic in Recommendations
Agree on "My Shining Hour." Very good set. I'm also really digging Al Grey's "Night Train Revisited," but the sleeper of the bunch afaic is Budd Johnson's "JPJ Quartet." The Tubby Hayes is indeed dull, but the Howard McGhee/Teddy Edwards disc isn't quite that bad. Also highly recommended is the Dizzy Gillespie 1957 Orchestra date, which makes a terrific companion to the Verve Newport set recorded, iirc, only a few weeks later. -
Anyone found a way to discard old VHS Tapes???
RDK replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You HATE this planet, don't you???? Well, is there a practical/profitable way of recycling them? One that doesn't cost more money and/or energy to turn them from useless, unwanted media containers into plastic pellets or something? I mean, seriously, nobody uses VHS tapes anymore - even libraries don't want them - so they're gonna eventually end up in a landfill one way or the other. Even shipping them to somebody who "wants" them is gonna cost a bundle - and there's environmental impact from shipping as well. Ray, first, I hope you know my humor enough to know I was just kidding with you....secondly, they are just so freakin' big! And I have so many!! No joke, I have a big box just taking up room of the one's I copied, sitting behind my sofa. And I can barely move the box now! And I have many more to follow once they are copied. Don't really want to even copy those right now. I'm just not a big fan of waste. That site I linked in the first post, they either degauss the VHS tapes so they can be used again as surveillance tapes for police, etc. Or they can be broken down for their raw parts, and reused. But, like I said before, I don't want to pay a hefty amount of money to get rid of these. I just thought someone would say call _____they come to your house, and take it off your hands. Yeah, I'm a dreamer. Watch, in a few years we will all hear about someone that has made millions of dollars recycling tapes, just going door to door to get them! Going to have to do some work, see what if any recycling centers we have in the ATL(Nearly 5 million folks here, there's gotta be one or two, right??) Mgraham's idea sounds like a good one as well.... Funny, on this issue , I am sounding like the the bed wetting liberal, and you sound like the heartless Republican! No sweat. I knew you were kidding, but damn - in retrospect my post does sound more serious and snarky than I intended. I'm an acknowledged packrat so I've got a few boxes of the buggers as well and just the other night i was thinking about culling a few more of them. Didn't know that there were any legit recycling uses for them, impractical as they may be. Not sure where the "Republican" part of my tone comes in, though I'll cop to some libertarian tendencies. As for the "heartless," well I had just spent two hours watching Simon Cowell on Idol and Gordon Ramsey on Kitchen Nightmares. -

I still can't get over the point/title of this thread. So Organissimo is now a "hostile land" that one is "exiled" to? Fuck that. -

What's the problem with simply tossing them in the trash? -
Clouds cleared up for most of it. Perfect view!

Hell, I've been listening to jazz for nearly thirty years now and I still don't pretend to know shit about it! Okay....well good luck with that. Well I just started reading Kart's book, so in about a week I should know as much as Larry... That's why, as some rabbis believe is the case with the Torah, I deliberately decided not to include in the book certain vital bits of information. Mankind should not know too much. Dammit. I guess I'll just have to learn about jazz the old fashioned way... by spinning more Al Hirt LPs.
