Teasing the Korean

Al is on a couple of the early singles, probably "Surfin'" and "Surfin' Safari." He may also be on a few other tracks on the first album, even though David Marks is in the photos. Even though he was at school, Al was still marginally involved that first year. I think he did a few recording sessions when he was in town. And there was at least one concert, and there is a photo, where Brian couldn't make it, and both Al and David Marks played the gig. How is that for foreshadowing? The remarkable thing about Al, for me, is how his voice blended so well with the Wilsons, even though he is not a blood relative. He used to sing right under Brian when they did the 4-voice Freshman-styled stuff. His voice was like a perfect combination of Brian and Carl, and he would frequently handle their lead parts live at shows they didn't play. I'm curious to hear what he sounds like now. And I simply cannot wait to hear "Don't Back Down" live!

Yes, generally a combination of a ballsy mono mix, more compression than the LP version, the wider 45 grooves, and the faster RPMs. Sometimes mono 45s received a dedicated mix in addition to the mono LP version. I have old mono 45s that have never sounded as good on mono LP or on CD.

I have been seeking a reasonably priced copy of this since you suggested it. The bossa albums are the best. Beyond those, I like the two Eddie Sauter albums and the Michel Legrand album. Any time spent listening to the others robs me of time I could spend with the above. EDIT: I think he did one with Russ Garcia that I like, unless I'm mixed up.

Dark Shadows defined my childhood. The cancellation of that show so close to the Beatles' breakup was more than I could handle.

I generally like Nancy Wilson, but sometimes she would get lazy with the more intricate melodies and simplify them, presumably under the guise of improvisation. I have dozens of her Capitol LPs, all mono, all in beautiful shape, from thrift store hauls over the years.

Well, here's a rarity: I found the Argo album where he's sitting in the moderne chair for a buck (the LP, not the chair) and it is in PRISTINE condition. I've certainly found clean copies of his albums over the years, but they are almost always beat to hell. What's the deal, were they party records back in the day and no one took care of them?

I never pass up his records. The tone he gets on the bagpipes is not too far from the harder soprano sax tone that Coltrane and others coaxed from the instrument.

Still haven't got Languidity. The 50s/early 60s stuff kind of appeals to me because of the exotica influence. There is something really compelling about Sun Ra's oddball world view (galactic view?) when juxtaposed against the more accepted jazz and pop approaches of that period. I love all of these for different reasons. I have had a hard time getting into Atlantis for some reason, even though I really love the other albums from around the same time. I'm really into the Magic City lately. My least favorites are the vocal groups and singles collections, although the latter has some gems. Overall, my 2 (4) favorites are Angels & Demons/Nubians and Fate in a Pleasant Mood/When the Sun Comes Out.

I love all of his eastern-tinged stuff where he plays the flute. I probably already said this on the same thread a year ago.

I have a few things by the Innovations Orchestra on LP - Portraits, etc.. but is the 2-CD Capitol compilation the most comprehensive place to get all the studio recordings?

The mono version of "Pisces Aquarius" is among the best pop/rock LPs of 1967/68. RIP Davy.

It seems like an overgeneralization to characterize hard bop as a simplified, stylized, gospel-infused groove-based version of bebop. While that kind of stuff certainly exists, there was plenty of inventive, burning, intense post-bop in the 50s and early 60s, often played by musicians who are generally characterized as "hard bop" players. Granted, not everyone is a genius like Mozart or Charlie Parker.
