  1. I e-mailed him several days ago but have not heard back.
  2. And still is... I know the Wilson-Bacharach link gets made on occasion, but never as vocally as the Wilson-Spector one, it seems. I think that is a mistake. Nice to see all the love for all the hits, but I'm tellin' y'all, it's some of these album cuts that are really opening my eyes/ears. That stuff is just...a world unto itself. "Let Him Run Wild" is very Bacharach-esque.
  3. I bought the LP for a dollar.
  4. I found Kenyon Hopkins's "The Hustler" for 25c. It was in less-than-ideal, but playable, shape. I'm glad I grabbed it, because it STILL hasn't been reissued, and the original rarely pops up in any condition.
  5. What if it was 50c or a dollar?
  6. NPR recently ran a GREAT vintage Piano Jazz installment with Henry Mancini as guest: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...toryId=94772943 And yes, there is Wurlitzer electric piano on Bossa Nova + Soul.
  7. This is SUCH a GREAT RECORD, maybe my favorite by her after "Something Cool." The version of "Lazy Afternoon" on here is my favorite version of that tune. And I LOVE The Great Pete Rugolo!!!
  8. I used to have the Epic album "Her Name is Rita Reys" which I ended up unloading. Not sure if Tom Dissevelt's involvement was the selling point.
  9. Probably not. Buddy Rich's bands were never this good.
  10. Are we going to get "Trip to the Mars" by Roland Kovac?
  11. Bacharach's hits are so familiar to us now that it's easy to forget how offbeat and downright WEIRD some of them are musically. Interesting rhythmic patterns in the melodies, wide-range note jumps, etc. They are almost like avant-garde pop tunes. In this regard, it's amazing that he was so successful. Dionne was indeed a great singer back then. To this day her vocal on "Walk on By" blows me away.
  12. I agree that he put out LOTS and LOTS of schlock - particularly for Capitol in the late 50s and 60s. However, I have 4 of his solo albums - 1 Capitol, 1 MPS, and 2 Concord, and they are all pretty amazing in the solo jazz piano genre.
  13. In a Chinese Garden, written by guitarist Chuck Wayne, is GORGEOUS.
  14. Recording techniques changed as studios or labels acquired hi fi equipment. Naturally, it came earlier for some than others.
  15. From what I've read, that was a concern for Stax, which was why they started Volt.
  16. I was just referring to the general practice. I know that was the situation with Stax and Volt, IIRC.
  17. Part of it had to do with DJs not being inundated with multiple records from one label at once. Otherwise, it could appear that a particular label was being favored.
  18. The speeds are formats and don't directly have to do with recording per se. 78s in the early days were lo-fi. By the end of the 78 era, hi fi music was being released on 78s, and they sounded amazing (because of the higher speed). Tape recording with an expanded dynamic range was what defined hi fi.
  19. Because the LP era coincided with the availability of hi-fi media for in-home situations. The LP was, initially, the main medium for hi-fi. As for titles like "Kenton in Hi-Fi," they were used primarily for artists who recorded prior to the hi-fi era.
  20. If you're so important, why are all your albums in the dollar bin?
  21. It is indeed the "soundtrack" for that show. The quotes around "soundtrack" refer to the fact that TV "soundtrack" albums from that period could be very different from what was heard on the show. That said, Kenyon Hopkins did both the music for the TV show as well as the album, so I'm assuming there was at least some thematic consistency.
  22. The "simple" nature of the tunes on Kind of Blue - and I don't mean that in a negative way - makes the album more accessible than many other jazz albums. It was a touchstone jazz album for a lot of people in that regard.
  23. Bossa Tres - Audio Fidelity (stereo) Brasil 66 (1st album) - A&M (mono)
  24. As a part of the (small) intended audience for these releases, I have every right to criticize what I perceive as bad creative decisions on the part of the manufacturer. And I choose not to buy. Big deal. Why do any of you care? I'm not urging a boycott against the company. These are limited edition releases, and you have one fewer person to bid against when these things show up on eBay.
