So, probably just a coincidence of names, then. Or they were fourth cousins, three times removed!! Thanks for the responses! gregmo

    Jimmy Bunn

Was he related to guitarist Teddy Bunn? gregmo
  3. I'm not ordinarily into "out" or avant garde things, but this drama did cause me to order the rapidly disappearing Threadgill Air set (shipped) and the Clifford Jordan set. Whether that one will ship or not, we'll just have to see. As another poster wrote, if I get it, great, if not.... But I'm an unqualified Mosaic fan. I *really* don't want to see the label go. gregmo
  4. Hope springs eternal. I'd like to have that prospective Teddy Wilson Columbia set! gregmo
  5. Goodman had a bop band that recorded for Capitol. He loved Wardell Gray. The band wasn't a commercial success, though, so he disbanded it, saying of bop (as you indicate in your post) "I never liked it." gregmo
  6. The new Teddy Wilson Columbia set isn't available for pre-order, at least not anywhere I've seen, so I worry whether we'll see it. I'll really miss 'em if they go, *especially* if they don't get those 60s Johnny Hodges Verves out first!!
  7. Sarah Vaughn did some nice work for the label. The old Musical Heritage Society reissued some of that on its own labels, but not all of it. gregmo
  8. Thanks! It sounds good--I may just have to get it! gregmo
  9. I saw her in the early 70s. She was wonderful. I remember she asked the engineers to bring up the house lights "so I can see this wonderful audience." Of course, it was because the bright spots hurt her eyes, but I thought that was a cool (and sweet) way to solve the problem. She sang beautifully, as she always did. Just had a trio with her. Pure Ella. gregmo
  10. No, I was trying at many different hours of the day. And like I said, other sites were coming up quick. Weird. Well, I'm glad the problem seems to be solved, whatever it was! gregmo
  11. I'd like to hear about the Curtis Fuller cd ("Crankin'"). Is it a fairly straight-ahead bop date, or was Curtis flirting with fusion? gregmo
  12. So, I haven't been able to access the Board for the last couple of days. Has there been a glitch? I haven't had trouble accessing other sites. The withdrawal pains were beginning to get serious! gregmo
  13. Happy, happy!! gregmo
  14. Just saw it yesterday. I thought it was pretty good, and like several others here, I enjoyed Wayne Shorter's stories the most. gregmo
  15. Sony owns all the RCA Victor material, and that has appeared on cd, most notably in the mammoth Duke Ellington Centennial set but also in a compilation cd issued in the early 90s called "Early Ellington." Sony also controls the post-1933 Brunswicks, but I assume you're only asking about the very early stuff.

Not to me. Keep posting. If people don't want to read a thread, then, wonder of wonders, they don't have to click on it, do they? gregmo

I don't mind 'em. Jazz musicians often pass away without much notice, and the least we can do is remember them here. As for celebs, that's what the Miscellaneous category is for. gregmo
  19. Yes, well, I don't think anybody ever thought of it as a potential oscar winner!! Tommy and Jimmy weren't bad musicians, and their bands were pretty good, but great actors they definitely were not! gregmo
  20. It would be nice to have all the Okeh material with alternates in GOOD sound. We've had to put up with that old "Okeh Ellington" cd set for a long time. French CBS did issue the 47-52 Columbia things years ago in a 5-cd set (the fifth cd encompassed "Liberian Suite" and "Masterpieces by Ellington," the others all singles), but that was masters only, no alternates. I came across the set in Paris's wonderful Jazz Corner store, but good luck finding them now! gregmo
  21. There is a jam session in the movie with Art Tatum, Charlie Barnet, Ziggy Elman, and Ray Bauduc as well as some of the hits by both bands ("Marie" and "Green Eyes"). It's been available on DVD for some time as well as being on youtube (above): Fabulous Dorseys gregmo
  22. Well, *that's* a drag! Hope it comes soon! I'm listening to the Ellington "An Intimate Piano Session" cd right now. Very nice.
