  1. Deepest condolences to her family. gregmo
  2. Disc One, with Bobby Hackett. Wonderful, wonderful music:
  3. Never seen the follow up. Love it!! gregmo
  4. "Last time I was down South I walked into this restaurant, and this white waitress came up to me and said: 'We don't serve colored people here.' I said: 'that's all right, I don't eat colored people. Bring me a whole fried chicken.'" One of a kind! gregmo
  5. Listening to the great master on this one right now. He doesn't disappoint!
  6. Jim's love for the Goodman Russia album caused me to listen to it again, and it does stand up pretty well (though Bill Crow's account of the leader on that tour is somewhat less than complimentary! Russia Without Love) My favorite late Benny is an album he recorded for London. It seems obvious to me that he really enjoyed these musicians and was having a good time:
  7. All that means is that you have some great listening ahead of you! gregmo
  8. This is a hard one. The two Teagarden sets for sure. Love the Blakey 1960 set. And then probably the two Basie Roulette sets. gregmo
  9. Back Home in Indiana gregmo
  10. Me too. Seeing it this evening. gregmo
  11. Happy, happy, there, Lon!!!
  12. Decided to order this one from Dusty Groove. New Rosolino is always a must for me. gregmo
  13. Hope really does spring eternal! gregmo
  14. The Hodges Verves, damn it. The Hodges Verves!! gregmo
  15. Yeah, I wondered when I saw the news about the Benedetti set whether we'd see the Wilson. Hope, hope! gregmo
  16. Yep. I thought exactly the same thing. I'm wondering seriously whether we'll see that promised Teddy Wilson set. gregmo
  17. Kaplan rushes past this period in his otherwise thorough two-volume biography. I get the impression she and his kids got along VERY badly. What was the story there? gregmo
  18. Someone REALLY needs to find out about the Goodman set for Jim! gregmo
  19. Yeah, I love ALL the Terry/Brookmeyer things. That was a great group! gregmo
  20. Well, I *am* a Hartman fan, and I don't think anybody ever sang "I See Your Face Before Me" better than he did on the Bee Hive date. I have just about everything he ever recorded (it's not too hard!), and I think this is his best--even better than the album with Trane. I'm with John in liking me some late Touff too. All that said, a lot of the sessions on the Bee Hive box are the kind that would get "three stars" from Down Beat reviewers, in the sense that they're listenable and often fun, but not necessarily essential. But how many sessions we enjoy fit that high standard? gregmo
  21. While we're on the subject of J.J. and Kai, does anyone have the very last LP they ever recorded together, "Stonebone"? It was the third of their albums for A&M/CTI. From the very little I've been able to find out about it, it was only issued briefly in Japan. Always been curious to hear that one! gregmo
  22. I was also on the fence, which is why I didn't order it until the "sky is falling" message came out. I'm looking forward to listening so I'll know which side of the fence I *should* have fallen off of! gregmo
