  1. I do that now and then. I mark it down to pre-senile dementia. It's very frustrating! gregmo
  2. I'm sure Trane was there. According to his most die-hard fans, he's immortal. gregmo
  3. I must have gotten lucky or something because I only placed my order Thursday night. I ordered it from Amazon. They say it should be here in a week and a half or so. Looking forward to it! Getting hold of those Storyville boxes can be an adventure. gregmo
  4. The dog doesn't look quite as uncomfortable as one might expect.
  5. I've never explored the extensive Bear country stuff. Love the big Cole boxes and especially the Louis Jordan Decca Bear box. That one's a real prize. I've been tempted by the Flatt and Scruggs stuff but haven't bitten. I like bluegrass. Where's a good place to get the Bear boxes on the American side of the pond? CDWolf used to be the place, but no more. gregmo
  6. The George Benson set looks interesting. I don't have all of those, except for the first. gregmo
  7. And Don Ho should know...er...did know...well...not about the soul part.
  8. I wonder whether particularly aggressive drummers might not seem a little hard on the ear no matter who they are just because we might not be used to hearing them. When I first heard Buddy Rich (in the 60s Pacific Jazz records, believe it or not--I was pretty young!), at first I thought, man, he is too damned loud, but as I've listened to him over the years, on those records and others, I've come to appreciate the way he propelled those bands. Tony strikes me the same way, albeit in a very different context. gregmo
  9. As has mine. Ditto the thanks! gregmo
  10. It appears to be in stock at Worlds Records. I love Ella, but I still think $69.99 is pretty crazy for a 4-cd set. gregmo
  11. Careful posting this, you'll get Lon all excited. Some nice Urtreger on the Jazz in Paris series. gregmo
  12. Yeah, me too. I thought about using the deal to order the Ella in Hollywood set, but it's backordered. So it goes. gregmo
  13. Shelly Manne and His Men, Septet and Quintet Sessions, disc 2. gregmo
  14. Bing Crosby box! Way cool! gregmo
  15. She *was* hot. And I even enjoyed the rest of the flick! Going to visit my dad for Christmas today in WV. They've got a 3-D-equipped theatre there, so I might go see it again. gregmo
  16. Yeah, I waited and watched until an Amazon seller had it priced around $15 per disc (ca $60.00). I figured it was worth that price, and after listening to it, I think I was right! (And I was lucky in getting the Vaughan and Washington Mercury boxes just as they were going out of print.) Many thanks to others for the recommendations on Merrill. I'll check those out! gregmo
  17. Lon's recommendation is good enough for me, especially the part about the tank top. I'm seeing it this afternoon, though in my small town, no 3-D, alas. gregmo
  18. I'd save it for the Ellington set. I'm going to have the Crosby under the tree. Looking forward to that! (And I think my brother might get me the "Sinatra: New York" set--double cool!) gregmo
  19. New Orleans Suite 70th Birthday Concert Jazz Party I'd put "First Time" with Basie on the list, but it's not entirely an Ellington album. And I agree that "Moon Maiden" on "Intimate Ellington" is a gas! gregmo
  20. Bump. I finally got hold of the 4-disc Complete Helen Merrill Mercury set, and have just finished listening to the fourth disc. I was surprised at how good the sound was since the set dated from 1986. It appears (at least the one I have) to be Japanese--the notes (in English) are by Hiraku Aoki. Whatever its origin, it's certainly worth searching out (albeit, for a price). A really fine singer. I got turned on to her by the recent Mosaic singles which I also have. What others of her records should I check out? gregmo
  21. I haven't ordered this one. Just haven't been able to get over the very stingy playing time on the discs and the sense that it's a royal ripoff. I have the Twardzik material on another disc. gregmo
  22. Eric Dolphy: Complete Prestige Recordings arrived today from Newberry, and I'm into disc one. I like it *much* better than I thought I would. Looking forward to hearing the rest, even as he moves farther out. gregmo
  23. A *really* fine pianist! His albums with Sonny Stitt are still among my favorites. Happy Birthday Mr. Harris! gregmo
  24. Jeez, I'm gone just a few days....! Looks great on my Firefox browser, as many others have said. I haven't tried a search yet. Hope that's improved too. Thanks Jim! gregmo
