  1. Grace, style, cool ideas, technique--Hank Jones has them all. Happy birthday! greg mo
  2. Apologies if this has already been discussed: Has anyone listened to the "Complete Ellington Indigos" on Jazz Beat? It looks like a Spanish pirate label except that there are a fair number of alternate takes. I'm wondering about the sound. Also the recent reissue of "A Drum is a Woman"? Anyone listened to and commented on that? If so and I've missed it, I hope somebody will post a link (just watch--it's probably on THIS thread and I've missed it!). Otherwise, I'd like to hear comments. "Drum is a Woman" has often provoked a fair amount of comment! greg mo
  3. Great idea! Ill just pull those out of my billfold and put them in the mail! greg mo
  4. I wish there was some way to give them some suggestions for this series, but their website is hopeless. Anybody know of a way in? greg mo
  5. I suggested that one to Mosaic as a Single one time, but didn't hear anything beyond "we'll look at it," which is their stock answer to irritants like me. I think it's a great album that really captures Hackett's gorgeous tone well, and I've always wondered if there weren't more things recorded at that session worth issuing. greg mo Mosaic pretty much told me there will be no new "Singles". . . at least not for some time. That is bad news. I guess they must not have sold well. Any notion how we could suggest it to Verve for its "Originals" series?! greg mo
  6. All of this brings up another issue--the booklets. I assume Mosaic owns the copyright on those. I wonder if they could be persuaded to sell those alone either in print or for download from their site. As only two examples, I have all the Tina Brooks material and all the Freddie Redd material because it's been issued by Blue Note itself, but I'd love to have those Mosaic booklets from the out of print sets to go with that music! greg mo
  7. is this the one? never heard of it, looks interesting! It is interesting, and got an excellent review in Down Beat at the time, if memory serves, but the sound quality isn't very good. Provided you overlook that, it's a very interesting session. Dizzy and Mary Lou enjoyed something of a mutual admiration society. greg mo
  8. Now, if only they'd discover a few of the Nat King Cole Capitol and Art Hodes Blue Note sets lying around in some distributor/manufacturer warehouse some place! greg mo

  10. Nah, the Feds are too busy making cars! greg mo
  11. Opening bid is $9.99. Maybe I should bid $10? greg mo
  12. Rosemary Clooney's "The Songbook Collection" volume 6. I like this set a lot more than I thought I would. greg mo
  13. Ain't it the truth?! I thought my 4000 cds and 1000 or so lps was huge. Guess I have to get to work! greg mo
  14. And I just got my two cds, including the SACD Gil Evans. Concord is something else. Great record, by the way! greg mo
  15. They really are goofy, aren't they? I remember when they did that huge sale...what was it...last year? Year before? It was the same thing--pure chaos. Orders got delayed, some things were available, some not, no "order" to it at all. And yet, despite all the craziness, most orders did arrive...in time. The lunatics really do seem to be in charge of the asylum over there. greg mo
  16. New Louis Armstrong set, disc one. Great Satch! greg mo
  17. Well (he said, selfishly), I hope my order got processed before the Evans went out of stock! greg mo
  18. It's part of the Canadian conspiracy for world domination. South Park was right. To war!! greg mo
  19. Would that some of my [college] students wrote English half so well! greg mo
  20. I think you mean to say that their overhead is *high*. I don't know about that. They may know from experience that discounting does not increase the revenue stream. I'd have thought that now is the time to give serious discounts a go. The euromosaics which many of us here have bought have frequently been sold for less than half the regular Mosaic price so it can be done. When I said their overhead was "low" I meant that they don't have much staff, that their operation is pretty small, and that there aren't a lot of costs that can be cut in order to make room for the kind of discounting you suggest. Relatively speaking, I could see how that could also be defined as "high" overhead. You may be right in inferring that companies like Mosaic simply can't survive in the brave new world of downloads and streaming into which we all seem to be sliding. If so, that would be a shame. I confess that I've always viewed Mosaic as something more than a record company, and no, not as a family, which they like to say in their publicity materials. More like a favorite, if rather expensive, charity. I guess I feel a sort of moral responsibility to support them! But it definitely IS a very expensive charity! Too bad I can't get a tax deduction on all those sets! greg mo
  21. I'm afraid they wouldn't persist long if they started slicing prices. Their market is pretty small for these luxurious, expensive-to-produce sets, and my impression is that their overhead is very low. Not much fat there. The sets are mostly aimed at loons like us! They do occasional sales, and I recently saved about $16 (on the US side of the pond) by ordering the Armstrong set with the free shipping offer. Word today, by the way, that it was shipped!! greg mo
  22. Ah yes, but as I posted on that other thread, will it also leave out the vocals? There were some great ones in Duke's band during this period--Ivie Anderson for sure, and Al Hibbler too I think. Inquiring minds want to know! Not that I won't get it, of course! greg mo The Ellington set will have Ivie Anderson vocals, but, since the set is limited to Ellington's 1930s Brunswick/Columbia recordings, no Al Hibbler vocals - he didn't join until the 1940s. Of course. Brain fart on my part. Hibbler didn't join until after the recording ban, I think. Nice to know the Anderson stuff will be there. Did Duke have a male vocalist in the 30s? I can't remember. I'm pretty sure that Ray Nance and Herb Jeffries didn't join until around 1940. greg mo

  24. Couldn't agree more. Their saving grace is that, once you figure out how and where to email them about an order, they're usually pretty responsive, or at least, they have been in the past. greg mo
