One thing that this batch shows, is that the previously unissued tracks that were added to Japanese Blue Note issues from 2012 onward are kept for the later CD issues, at least in some cases. It would be minging not to retain these. At the risk of cluttering the thread up, I will add my latest list of all the "new" tracks. The CD Japan site does not list the CD numbers, but Amazon Japan has high-resolution pictures that do show them. An excellent tenor. It was said that there was pressure to get him out of Miles's group and get Wayne Shorter in, but he played magnificently on the "My Funny Valentine" and "Four And More" albums (both from a live engagement), and Herbie Hancock picked him for the "Maiden Voyage" date, when, presumably, he could have had Wayne; George plays wonderfully on that, too.

I have the two CD copies of each of "Plays W.C. Handy" and "Satch Plays Fats", which, as was said, are not identical. I wonder whether there is any more material on the session reels. But, really, these four CDs are enough.
-
Thanks, Lon. I wonder how much of the new set will overlap with "Ambassador Satch", if any at all. As you know, some of that was studio material, with fake audience noise added.
-
It should be "Vive la France".
-
I used to play with a superb pianist called Stan Jones, who also played at Ronnie Scott's. Stan told me that he saw Bill play at the "old" Ronnie's. At the end of a set, Ronnie said "A few months with Joe Loss would do him a power of good."

What's this about an Armstrong Columbia set? Mosaic already did a set with the 50s Columbia material. Is this 30s?

More "elevator music": All the Red Garland Trio, Ahmad Jamal and Three Sounds recordings. You never hear that in real elevators, of course. If only.

"White Christmas" is an ultra corny song that most of us are sick of, but it has nice blowing changes, and Bird's (live) version of it is great - another sow's ear turned into a silk purse. Another on with tasty changes is "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", recorded by Diz with Lucky Thompson in early 1946, and again by Stanley Turrentine with Jimmy Smith in 1960 with excellent results. There are many well-known tunes that I would refuse to play because they have been worn out by overuse. Like Miles, I don't like tunes with too many chords. They get cluttered up. A prime example is "There Will Never Be Another You". Yechh!

Re the sound quality on "Laughing Soul", it was recorded after the three Blue Note albums. George said that he asked Rudy to get the same sound, but Rudy flat refused to do so.

A new Italian friend tipped me off about an Italian farce starring Roberto Benigni called "Johnny Stecchino". I had never heard of it. As Troy McLure would have said, you may remember Benigni from the last Pink Panther movie, made after Peter Sellers had died. Outstanding movie. The same guy also told me about an Italian pianist/vocalist called Paulo Conte. That guy is superb. He sings in a grunty, Jimmy Durante style, and on the concert I heard, he wrote all the compositions and arranged them for a mid-size ensemble of superb musicians. Top drawer stuff.

Pim, you probably have some favorite artists. Search for albums by them, and get whatever you can afford. With most labels, it is easy to find a good CD version of an album. If you can find a Japanese version, those are always the best sounding, in my experience. Sony's U.S. CDs are good, and I have never heard a bad Fantasy CD of Prestige or Riverside. Blue Note CDs are a complex issue, with many remasterers. There is much difference of opinion about these, and I don't want to dwell on that here. Here is my personal recommendation: where possible, go for the 90s "Blue Note Works" CDs or the Japanese CDs from the last decade, especially if you want the extra tracks (which aren't on the "Blue Note Works CDs).

It is disgusting that our wonderful music is now controlled by these enormous, soulless empires, that know nothing about music. A read of Arthur Taylor's "Notes And Tones" is very pertinent here. Many famous players have something to say about who controls the music business.

I have the CD with the "new" take of "Three Coins". It is not essential, in my opinion. To me, it sounds a little perfunctory, a little unsettled. Grant Green only plays a short solo, and doesn't really get into top gear. The album is, of course, excellent and Wynton Kelly is sparkling. I find him rather dull on "Another Workout", as if the battery needed to be recharged. The original "Workout" album is the boss one.

"Gone" from Miles Davis and Gil Evans Porgy and Bess
Shrdlu replied to Teasing the Korean's topic in Discography
It is hard to imagine Danny Bank having difficulty with anything, and the same goes for the alto saxophone player, but there it is. Anyway, the track is a superb showcase for Philly Joe. For what it's worth, my favorite Miles & Gil is "Miles Ahead". The massive amount of alternate takes helps in that regard. -
For me, the best Rollins is from the 50s: Prestige and, of course, "Volume 2" with Monk and Horace on the same track, "Misterioso". Ha ha, they can stop the carnival.

I was in on the CD reissue rush back in the 90s. They came out thick and fast. In many cases, the CDs only got played once and then parked on the shelf. Recently, I decided to go through some of them, including the Mobley albums. I recommend "Dippin' " and "Hi Voltage".
-
I am very surprised, no astonished, to hear about this, in the context of Mosaic apparently fizzling out. Who needs a Mobley set?? If ever there was a player whose output was well issued, ... A much better idea would be a 1950s Savoy set. Or something else other than this. However, I hope that this set sells well for them, though. They know more about the business than I. Mjzee, I have the Blue Note Works CD of "Dippin' " and it sounds fine. By the time they did a later, U.S., version, there was a tape flaw that is not heard on the BNW CD - the tapes having aged more since then.
-
Who is "Craft Recordings"? These are Prestige recordings. The word "pirate" comes to mind.
-
Hi. Did you get the Sam Rivers Mosaic set?
I have it here, and we could do a deal for it, or I could send you CDrs. (Don't tell any Texas tenor saxophone players, lol.)
Best,
Steve

The saga of the departing CD continues. I have downloaded a few elusive tracks from Amazon. I was not pleased that they were 192 mp3. That is a bit naughty. 320 mp3 has been pretty standard for at least 10 years. I don't think they offered WAV, which the house music websites do have.

Jazz - Blamed Again!!!!!

I loved the Carter statue on The Simpsons, with the title "Malaise Forever". Poor old Duke there, having to hang out with Nixon. I wouldn't have attended. Superb album cover montage, Steve! Ausgezeichnet! -
The U.S. used to have an "M Bag" rate of about $18 to send a large bag of material out by surface mail, with unlimited weight. Obviously, a lot of items are not urgent, and the one-month time for surface mail is perfectly acceptable in many cases. Who wants to pay $60 to ship some papers, for example? Big Beat Steve expressed it well. I am sure he speaks for many. $20, or more, to ship one CD, is more than enough to stop a sale on Discogs or elsewhere. This U.S.P.S. policy has sealed off the U.S. from foreign markets.

As The Critic said, "It stinks". But America has had lousy administration for decades. I'm glad the people of America are a separate entity.

I thought that religious discussion is not allowed on this site.
