Prompted by the K2/SACD thread in the reissues forum, I thought I'd start a thread on the sonics of the various K2 series titles. I'm considering buying a bunch of (domestic) K2s, and while they're only a couple more bucks than the regular OJC CDs, I figured I might as well not spend more money if the sonic benefit is only marginal. So, which K2s are a big step up? And which ones are worse or at least not significantly better than their OJC counterparts?

Harddrive manufacturers suck...

Good to know. I bought a Seagate a few months back on Uncle Skid's recommendation and it's been working fine...keeping my fingers crossed. Sorry you've had such a hassle! -

A = fucking A, man. Danielle Steel ain't all that in Boston, huh? ← Of course not. Why would you bother to dig into someone else's fantasy when you have so many strapping, hot young men like me up here? -
Doubtful...they're vegetarians in the wild. Plus, they have no teeth. Speaking of big, toothless fish, did you ever end up feeding the tarpon?

Welcome to the weird world of pompous, anal retentive grown-ups at college radio stations... Part of me feels that there's actually something a little unhealthy about this particular species - sorta like the high school teacher whose major reason for teaching is that he never really grew out of the high school mentality. It's more than a little creepy, IMO.

I do, and trust me, it will be good. Robert held down the piano chair in my high school band two years before me. Even at age 17, he was sick. I'm not sure, but I think that version of the band may have included the Rodriguez brothers on trumpet and piano and E.J. and Marcus Strickland on drums and tenor.

Eh? The managerial "staff" all went on summer break? Nice work if you can get it... or should I invoke a less "out" tune? ← Not uncommon at student-run stations. At WHRB, they run automated loops almost all summer long. Lately people have been getting lazy and just been reusing old loops from previous holiday breaks. (Fortunately, I think I put Organissimo on one of those old loops, so it's quite possible that Joe, Jim, and Randy are in heavy rotation all summer.)

Some people have too much time on their hands...

I haven't heard all of these but I have a hard time taking seriously any list that doesn't include the original version of "Pursuance."

Sorry I couldn't make it by yesterday - was moving all day and was stymied by a futon that just wouldn't come apart. Will try to check the book out, though! -

This Thom Crooze debacle...
Big Wheel replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
My understanding of it was that it's more carrot than stick: that the celebrities don't have to do most of the expensive garbage that Scientology demands of its followers in exchange for being public faces of the cult that people can admire. But I could be wrong about this. Oh yeah, wasn't Chick Corea's Scientology proselytizing at least partly to blame for the breakup of Circle? -

More proof that I hung out with the wrong crowd in college... The Scientology people still have tables set up at the entrance to the Harvard Square T stop every few days. I've often thought it would be very entertaining to stand next to the guy who holds up the "FREE STRESS TEST" sign with an identical-looking sign of my own that reads "CRAZY GREEDY CULTISTS" and has an arrow pointing toward the table. -
And I think the place I spotted was somewhere downtown between City Hall and SoHo. So that makes at least 3 of this kind of place, and I'm almost sure there are more.

After posting or doing a search query, I get the "please stand by" page as usual, except the redirect to the next page is either really slow or isn't working at all. Everything works fine by clicking the "click here if you do not wish to wait" button, but kinda strange. Is it possible I accidentally enabled something in Mozilla that blocks the redirection? Edit: just posted and it didn't happen again. Weird...

NYC, for some reason, has a bunch of hot dog/juice bar joints, usually with papaya juice. My buddy told me I had to check out Gray's Papaya, and then I spotted at least one or two other places with the same thing. Is this just a New York phenomenon? (apologies for being slightly OT)

Leftover crapola week continues with: One Hebrew National beef frank (with Gulden's brown mustard) Pakistani orange lentils (with, uh, Embasa brand salsa instead of fresh tomatoes and garlic and chiles) Couscous...maybe with some coriander stirred in? Update: interestingly enough, the daal with salsa actually came out tasting pretty good, much to my surprise. I guess I haven't been putting enough tomato in in past versions (though I'm not sure even that would help, given how crappy most American fresh tomatoes are...)

That reminds me: fuck Tonic and the Knitting Factory. ← That bad? I've never been to either but didn't realize that they had a bad reputation.
-
Uh....rice and napa cabbage. And some bok choy. It's about all I've got left! Tomorrow I'm going to work on the leftover couscous.... I'm not sure where I got my Depression-era mentality. Some days I think I was born about 80 years too late...

Oh yeah, forgot to note that Gillette is currently on my shit list. My electric Oral-B toothbrush got recalled, I didn't find out about it until maybe a year later, sent in my toothbrush three or four months ago, and still haven't received a replacement. I haven't yet called to follow up, though, so there's still some chance of redemption. (and maybe it was a fuckup on my end...never sure with these things.) After working at Avis Car Rental for a summer, I learned enough about the company to never want to rent a car from them. I doubt I'll ever buy another computer from Dell again, given their complete mishandling of customer service. The next computer I own may be home-built. Not a company, but as I mentioned in another thread, I'll never watch another Bruce Willis flick after seeing Armageddon. What a jingoistic, intelligence-insulting piece of shit. I'm so repelled by Quentin Tarantino's personality that I've avoided seeing most of his movies, too. I'll only go to the Blue Note in NYC if I think it's the LAST chance I have to see the artist. A terrible club, IMO.

Wal-mart, for the same reasons others have. There are a few restaurants that, while not on my "permanently banned" list, I would never go to of my own volition. (If friends are making the plans, I'll suck it up and go.) They include: Chili's (wildly overrated by some) The Cheesecake Factory (awful atmosphere and a ridiculous "no reservations" policy that ensures you're going to be sitting on your ass in a mall for 45 minutes just so the restaurant can give the impression that the place is really popular by always having 25 people standing outside the door) Bartley's Burgers down the street in Harvard Square (cramped seating, loud, somewhat overrated burgers, definitely not worth the long lines on weekends) After a bad experience with some rancid chicken at Burger King, I swore off both BK and McDonald's until this year, but broke down because BK was the only place to eat in the airport and we were starving.

Sweet! Not all that far from my new apartment, either! -
Whole red snapper, baked, with white rice and stir-fried napa cabbage with oyster mushrooms. Not great, and not helped by the fact that I'm not very good at getting all the scales off snapper. Think I'll stick to more local fish from now on. I somehow managed to screw up the rice this time too--didn't use enough water and had to throw away about the top third of what was in the rice cooker, as it was rock hard. The vegetables were pretty good, though. I'm moving in a week and have to finish off all the crap I've got in the freezer.

Here's one thing that confuses me about the site: Where did the early emails come from? I mean, it's not like the characters of Strong Bad and Homestar Runner were particularly well known until after quite a bunch of SB emails had piled up, right? So how did anyone know about the whole backstory of Strong Bad hating Homestar and whatnot to ask about it in an email? Or am I just being dumb and unaware that none of the emails are real questions from the public?
-
To these two I would add Homsar. Every line he utters is bizarrely funny, and they use him sparingly, so it doesn't get old. Also, I thought the evolution of Homsar was pretty hilarious--someone misspelled "Homestar" in a SB email and rather than point that out, they just created a new character that was a weird-ass version of Homestar.
