I listened to The Nightwatch for the first time in a long time yesterday. I'd totally forgotten about Fripp's classic line, "We shall now tune our mellotrons and attack culture once more." Guy

I disagree. Some of his more Trane-ish playing from the mid and late 60s is superb. Guy

As far as the IaSW box, I really like Wayne's composition "Two Faced". Very enigmatic. And of course the two tracks from Filles de Kilimanjaro, though they sound much better on the original album. Guy

Pick up In the Court of the Crimson King, Larks' Tongues in Aspic (or Red), and Discipline. Those should give you a nice introduction into the group's 3 most important periods. Guy well, they have done quite a bit since 1980, so i would add Thrak and The Power to Believe to this list to get a better representation. Can't speak for Power to Believe, which I haven't heard, but I don't think Thrak is essential Crimson. Though it has excellent songwriting by Adrian Belew, on the instrumental stuff it sounds like they're trying too hard. I'd get any of the mid 70s or 80s albums first. My favorite 90s Crimson is the Projekct Two set Space Groove. Guy

I like a lot of the stuff in the IASW box, but it does have a bit of filler and the Coltrane contains none. However, GA, I seem to recall you dislike avant-garde stuff and the Coltrane set is along those lines. Guy

Picked up a copy via yourmusic.com. I think my initial assessment was right. The tempos are generally slow and as a result the album drags a bit. I wish they'd dug a little harder into the boogaloo groove on "Twins". Guy

I was really digging this album just now. I find that the last three tunes on the album have grown on me a lot, I used to overlook them. Guy

Just saw this tonight. Good movie, not great. It gave my mom and cousin a good opportunity to practice their Arabic. Guy

I liked it. A little long -- the LOTR movies merited 3 hours, this didn't -- but very enjoyable. Dinosaurs rock. Guy

That gospel-infused funky sound is one of the standout characteristics of Jarrett's playing during this period. Guy

Lon, how could you have had such a steadfast opinion on the music earlier before you had even recieved it? These recordings have been circulating for a few years. I'm guessing that Lon heard those and/or other recordings by this group. Guy

I haven't listened to the trio's Chicago 2004 concert -- is that them actually playing "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town?"

Happy birthday

I got mine today. A second "massive " from me, too. I actually like the narration. I didn't at first, but for what it is, it's kinda cool. I like the narration as well, but when I'm interested in listening to the flow of music in progress, it's better not to have it there. I wonder if we'll ever discover the source of the last few minutes of Live Evil. Guy
