  1. Actually, one more thing to add: normally I don't pay much attention to performers' apparel, but Andrew was wearing socks with lots of little red hearts on them. Guy
  2. Like Ron, I'm definitely glad I decided to go. It was a very good set (11 pm) -- not earthshaking, but I enjoyed it a lot. McPherson was great in accompaniment, though (unlike everybody else) I didn't go crazy for his solo. Greg Tardy was good. But the highlight for me was Andrew's piano playing. Guy
  3. I've never had any problems with the club. No personality to the place, but I agree with kh1958 that it's better than Birdland. Guy
  4. On the plus side owners of beachfront property in Oklahoma and banana plantations in New England will be very pleased. Guy
  5. Well, there's a recording from the fall of 1969 where Chick joins Jack on drums for "Spanish Key", and another where he plays some sort of flute. Guy
  6. Apparently the melting of the Greenland glaciers has also accelerated in the last few years. Guy
  7. Sweet. There's an IHOP just down Whitney Ave. Guy
  8. Alright, I am going to the 11 PM tonight. Anybody want to meet up? Guy
  9. I agree. FWIW, before the Heat beat a bunch of bad teams (+Detroit) for their current winning streak, they faced Dallas and lost by 36 points. Guy
  10. No way the Heat have a shot. The Suns and Mavs are both better teams. Guy
  11. Bob Belden is becoming the human analogue of the Cellar Door release date... Guy
  12. If it's any consolation, I also thought it was spelled "forward". For what it's worth Zawinul never struck me as heavily influenced by Horace Silver. Maybe I should listen to his playing more closely. Chick Corea, on the other hand... Guy
  13. Usually they let you catch two sets for the price of one during the week. I might come up on Saturday nonetheless. Guy
  14. "MOZART'S FORTEPIANO This instrument was built in the early 1780s by the Viennese keyboard-instrument maker Anton Walter and purchased by Mozart in 1784. Malcolm Bilson plays on a copy of the instrument for most of the concertos on the present series of recordings." The strings are 6/6/4/4/2, except in concertos 22-27 (8/6/4/4/2)
  15. Nobody's said "this thread" yet... Guy
  16. Hmmm... it's snowing tomorrow making driving hazardous so I might not come down to NYC. The only alternative is the weekend, but I hate paying exorbitant prices for just one set... I might have to pass on this. Guy

    Funny Rat

As far as BS/SN, I really like Jon Jang's Two Flowers on a Stem. Post-to-free-bop with Chinese folk-music themeses. With David Murray, James Newton, Billy Hart, Santi Debriano and one other musician who plays erhu. Newton is stupendous on this, and there's a really nice version of "Meditations on Integration". Guy
  18. This must have happened after the final time I saw them (fall 2000), because that was an actual band. Guy
  19. The last album I picked up was Waterfall Cities and it was OK. OTOH I liked Curious Corn quite a bit. I saw them live two or three times in the late 90s and early 00s. They're OK as a live band -- too much like the studio albums. Aren't they pretty much an Ed solo project at this point? I think the group was best when Merv and Joie were members. Haven't heard Pongmaster's Ball at all, and haven't listened to Spice Doubt for a while. I wonder how that goop in the album sleeve is holding up, I should go check. Guy
  20. Peacemeal is one of Eddie Gomez/Jack DeJohnette's best recordings together. Man they are a fucking powerhouse together! A big Big second for Peacemeal. This may be a stupid question, but how many recordings did they make together? There's a Bill Evans album, right? What else? Guy
  21. A bunch of BS & SN albums: Muhal Richard Abrams, Blu Blu Blu Old & New Dreams, s/t David Murray, Ming David Murray, Murray's Steps David Murray, Body & Soul Bley/Haden/Motian, Memoirs Bley/Gilmore/Peacock/Motian, Turning Point Allen/Haden/Motian, Etudes Paul Motian trio, One Time Out Steve Lacy/Mal Waldron, Communique
  22. I'm in the UK and can recommend The Woods. They are not the fastest to fulfill orders but they are reliable. Shipping is included in the UK prices so I'd guess that their overseas shipping is reasonable. They never charge your card until the order is shipped. Drop them an email. Well, I ordered. They told me their US shipping is 1.50GBP for a 1 CD order, less (so this is presumably per CD) for larger orders. Guy
  23. D.D. -- have you heard any of the European dates from the fall of 1969? They're even more free (in the jazz sense) than the Fillmore dates, though with less electronic mayhem. Guy
  24. I used to be a lot more into these guys in college, but still enjoy them quite a bit. Some of my favorite albums by Ed, Merv, Joie, Roly and their friends:
