Hi Aftab, The Ilori album is pretty damned good! However, I should state that it is very heavy on African rhythms and a little light on the jazz (improvisation). Hosea Taylor plays a little bit on it, and I like the bass work of Ahmed Abdul-Malik... although as I say, they don't improvise very much. I also dig Ilori's vocals. To me, it represents an odd addition that Alfred Lion made to his catalogue... I'd love to hear the story as to how this album came to be recorded by Blue Note. What I'm really looking forward to are the "additional tracks" from the unissued Ilori session that was recorded a year and a half after African High Life! That session had Donald Byrd, Hubert Laws, Bob Cranshaw, and Elvin Jones on it! Here's what the Blue Note Discography says about it: ------------------------------------------------------ Solomon Ilori - Unissued Solomon Ilori (vo) with Donald Byrd (tp), Hubert Laws (fl-1, ts-2), Bob Cranshaw (b), Elvin Jones (dm), Chief Bey, Roger Sanders, Ladji Camara, Sunny Morgan (perc, vo), Coleridge Perkinson (musical director). October 30, 1964 - Englewood Cliffs, NJ 1458 tk.4 Bama bamu l'ayo (I have the strength to sing) -1,3 1459 tk.11 Toni omo re (Loving your child) -1,4 1460 tk.17 Agbamurero (Rhino) -1,3 1461 tk.25 Gbogbo omo ibile (Going home) -2 1462 tk.33 Igbesi aiye (Song of praise to God)(instr.) -2 -3: lead vocal with group vocal on these titles -4: lead vocal only on this title ------------------------------------------------------ I'm hoping this unissued session is similar to Donald Byrd's I'm Tryin' To Get Home session, which was recorded about 6 weeks after (December 17 & 18, 1964) Ilori's unissued session. Given the personnel (Byrd and Coleridge Perkinson especially), I'm guessing the sound would be similar. A nice batch of Connoisseur's for sure! Thanks for the info Kevin! Cheers, Shane

Four Freshmen and Mildred Bailey Running Low!
Indestructible! replied to billyboy's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Well... My guess is that this set is "timing out" rather than being "sold out". Didn't Mosaic have the number set at 10,000 for this set? There's no way in hell they sold nearly that many. But, count me in as another who will be grabbing it before it disappears. I don't want soulstation to hit me with that Procrastinator cover! Cheers, Shane -
Jim, I hear where you're coming from on this. I remember the last time I saw Jimmy Smith play live... it was clear to me at that moment that I was watching the man perform for the last time (in my neck of the woods, that is), and that was one emotional night for me. He still played well (not great, but good), and I probably was more focused on listening that night than I ever have been before (it was like I needed to remember every last thing about his performance)... and then I heard the news of his passing a little while later. I'll never, ever, forget that set by Jimmy... and Time Lines does have a similar feel for me... But, God, I love Andrew Hill, and I hope this is just the first of many to come in his third go-round with Blue Note!!! Cheers, Shane

Wax Poetics #15
Indestructible! replied to Brandon Burke's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Wow! My friend brought a copy of this over yesterday, and it's great! Guy, those are some absolutely fantastic photographs! Please feel free to share as many of those photos (and stories) as you'd like here anytime! And, much thanks to Brandon for this. Brandon, I noticed you were cited as being an archivist at Stanford. Are you still there, or have you since moved? I'm somehow thinking you are in D.C. these days? Thanks again for this Brandon and Guy! Cheers, Shane -
Hi All, Not sure if I saw this anywhere, but isn't this right around the time of Organissimo's third birthday? I remember the last days of a certain other BB, and I am grateful to Jim for creating this amazing place to hang. This board is truly like no other! Happy Birthday to the Organissimo BB, and long live the king! Cheers, Shane

Hi Jeff, S-E-A-G-A-T-E! Trust me on this one. I've got two 160GB and two 300GB externals, and they have never done anything but work like clockwork. They are nice and compact, and they're stackable to boot! Cheers, Shane -
World's Finest Car Destroyed in Crash
Indestructible! replied to Randy Twizzle's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hi Dmitry, True, the Enzo is a hell of a piece of machinery and can stop on a dime (so to speak). But that doesn't take into account the reaction time of the driver, who first needs to put the plan in place to stop the car. Even if the Enzo took only 10 seconds to go from 175-0 mph, the decision to hit the brakes rests on the driver... and if Erikkson really was driving the car with a BAC of .09, then his RT would've been even more hindered. There's a meaning behind the phrase "Speed Kills"... Either way, let me say this... I love the Ferrari, but anyone who drives it like that doesn't deserve to own one (or be driving period!). Enzo is probably still rolling in his grave over this! Cheers, Shane -

No s@#t, Einstein. 240 kmh = 149 mph. What happened to the spirit of adventure here. Are we just a bunch of old farts? Dmitry, Wow, what's up with that comment? Have you ever actually been on the PCH? A bunch of us have, and Adam is absolutely correct that driving it at 175 MPH is absolutely insane. Seriously, it is fucking insane to try to drive that road at that speed! I've also been in a car doing about 220 kph, but it was on the autobahn in Germany, where speeds like that aren't completely out of the ordinary. I love speed and fast cars, and can't wait for the F1 season to start in a couple of weeks (Go BMW-Sauber Go!), but good god man... I wouldn't trust Schumacher (the good one, not Ralf!) to drive 175 mph on the PCH, let alone "Dietrich"!!! Hey, knock yourself out on the autobahn all you want, or head down to Imola or Spa or any other closed course and drive like a bat out of hell... I've got no problem with that. More power to ya, I say! But if some fucker is doing 175 mph on a road I drive on ALL THE TIME, where the average speed limit is about 45 mph, then you bet I got a problem with that! How you can defend that behavior is beyond me. Cheers, Shane -
FUCK! What a pathetic effort in this Olympic tournament! Four year ago I was crying tears of joy, but now it's just waves of sadness. Can't say I didn't see it coming, though. And there's no doubt that karma came back around and bit us hard for including Bertuzzi on this team. Oh well, at least all of the Flames players at the Olympics survived and are healthy (unlike those who play for Vancouver... wow, is that some bad luck!). They even get a couple of extra days off to rest up for the big playoff push. Go Calgary Go! Cheers, Shane

It is. Some of these tracks were initially available because (I guess) e-music uploaded the whole catalog first and it took them some time (and possibly a number of reminders) later to take down the longer tracks. Hi All, Thanks for the info... To me, this is just a stupid decision on Tzadik's part. As an example, I went to download the newly added Ned Rothenberg "Solo Works - The Lumina Recordings", and three of the four songs on the album are "unavailable for download". Who the fuck wants to download just one song (of about 13 minutes) off of an entire album (of about 71 minutes). How is this helping the artist??? I'm sending off an e-mail to eMusic. Like in BFrank's case, I'll likely get get no response... but this situation needs to be taken care of at some point to make it worthwhile to all parties involved (the label, the artist, and the consumer). Cheers, Shane

Ladies and Gentlemen, I rest my case... Cheers, Shane P.S. ASNL77, I'll look around a few local shops to see if they have any of the vinyl Mosaic's you are interested in. Not likely to find much, but I'll give it a shot! (i.e., sorry for derailing your thread a second time)

Hi Jim, No problem! I actually agree with you on a number of your observations. Duguid can be a bit of an ass at times... I guess Canadians are just sensitive about all things curling, having been ridiculed for so long about it! I will say this... it's pretty easy to fall asleep listening to their commentary, as I've done it many times! Troy, you are pretty much spot on in regards to shoes and the sweeping of the ice! You sound like you've hit a bonspiel or two in your day! Cheers, Shane
-
Hey, hey, HEY! Jim, don't be slammin' my two main men in the curling announcer world! These two are the best EVER! Actually, growing up in Canada, I curled all the time (heck, we were even taught it in physical education class in junior and senior high school). It is a fun sport, and not nearly as easy as it looks on TV. Hell, I've cracked my skull on the ice many times over the years... although that ice may be pebbled, it still hurts! Anyway, the "two Don's" have been announcers on CBC for as long as I can remember... they clearly are the Godfathers of the curling announcer world. And, compared to some of the other announcers NBC has come up with (Cammie Granato? WTF is that all about? Sour grapes there much?), the Dons are where it's at. Erm, well... OK... let's just leave it at "they're not bad"! Go Canada Go! Cheers, Shane

ASNL77, Sorry to derail this thread! Please accept my apologies! Good luck with your search on the Mosaic LPs. I can say that I love the sound of the Curtis Fuller set, but unfortunately I don't have a spare to sell. Sorry 'bout that! Cheers, Shane

Hi Ken, Sorry, I didn't mean to intimate that I wanted YOU to start your own reissue label (although it would be great, I'm sure). That statement was meant for jazzhound! All he does is bitch about Cuscuna and Mosaic at every turn, so I usually "invite" him to start up his own reissue label so that he can do things the way he thinks they should be done. Oddly enough, he never has started up his own label... he just keeps bitching on and on and on! Keep on plugging away though, Ken... I'm crossing my fingers that those liner note gigs become more frequent for you! Cheers, Shane
-
Hi Ken, Don't worry about jazzhound too much. He's simply bitter that Cuscuna would not offer him a recording contract back in the day, so he takes his revenge by firing barbs like this on internet boards every now and then. It used to bother me quite a bit that jazzhound dissed Cuscuna, but now that I know the whole story, I just shake my head in pity at jazzhound's bitterness. It's sad, really. Jazzhound, get over it already! Oh, and while you're at it, feel free to start up your own reissue label so that you can do things any damn way you want! Cheers, Shane

Hey All, What the fuck is eMusic doing with the Tzadik catalog? It looks like any track that is longer than 15 minutes or so on any album is "Unavailable for download at this time". For example, just now I wanted to download Wadada Leo Smith's 4 CD set "Kabell Years", and found that 5 tracks are "unavailable"... those 5 tracks make up 107 minutes of music (or about 40% of the set)! Same thing when I went to download John Zorn's "Elegy", one of the four tracks is "unavailable". Seriously, has it been like this since Tzadik started on eMusic, or is this a recent decision? I had the Smith and Zorn album's in my "Save for Later" folder for a while now, and can't believe I would have put them there initially if that much music would be "unavailable". Cheers, Shane

I think the same could, arguably, be said of Public Enemy. It was good to see Ronnie Gilbert looking well. One wonders what the people in the audience--those with an ear for music--thought of the crap that took up 99% of the show? As I said before, the recent news that payola is alive and rampant explains why so much mediocrity has been allowed to float to the top. I don't care what you say about Herbie's playing last night, his musical integrity was certainly nowhere in evidence. In agreement with you on all fronts, Chris! (Well, except on the Public Enemy thing!) My question to those who've been on this mortal coil longer than I have... Have the Grammy's ever really meant anything to anyone other than those in the pop music world? The Grammy's have always been a joke to me, and most of the people I know that don't listen to pop music... Cheers, Shane
-
As Public Enemy (rightly) once said: "Who gives a fuck about a god-damned Grammy?" Cheers, Shane

Hi Clem and Jim, I have to totally agree with these sentiments. Kofsky's book was the first book I think I ever encountered that made me think "Yeah, that's it" after one sentence, and then make me scream "this is such fuckin' bullshit" the next. What an infuriating read! Jim, you are dead on about Kofsky's NEED to put words in Coltrane's mouth during that interview. His pathetic attempts came across even more clearly when I actually listened to the interview (many years after reading it). How Trane put up with that shit, I'll never know. Maybe he really was a saint??? Clem, there's no way in hell I'll be blaming Marx for things that Kofsky said... Marx wouldn't have said some of that inane shit in a million years! Kofsky seemed like a tremendous piece of work... Sorry, had to rant! Cheers, Shane

Yeah it is a good contrast. Nirvana is the greatest rock band in history. Pear Jam sucks. Hah! Sorry John, but Nirvana as "the greatest rock band in history" is a damn funny one liner! Don't get me wrong, I've dug on Nirvana ever since they were young, no money havin', down-and-out guys. Hell, I saw them more times in small little dives, playing in front of 20 people (that's with me included), than I can count. I watched them from their humble beginnings to their worldwide success (excess?). So I know Nirvana. And I love Nirvana. Nirvana being the best rock band in history? Hell, they weren't even close to being the best "punk-inspired" band in history! And each of them would agree with that statement! Kurt especially, if he were here... And, I find it wonderfully juicy that you harp on about how folks shouldn't call Miles "the greatest", and then you drop a quote like Nirvana being "the greatest"... Sorry to derail the thread. Carry on! Cheers, Shane

Now that would have had to have been one HELL of an explosion for the pen to get all the way up to Rochester! Methinks your coworker had a pretty "active" imagination! As for me, I was a senior in high school in Canmore, Alberta... had to take a Provincial English exam in the afternoon, so I was sleeping in when my mom called me from her work and told me to get up and turn on the TV. I had just turned 17, and the image of the white plumes of smoke stayed with me for days. It felt like I had just lost some good friends of mine! I wondered why the deaths of seven people I had never met had such an impact on me... still do, I guess. Shane -
