Ed, I ride a bike 8 miles to work and 8 back most days. Most times I carry panniers with a laptop, bottles of water, a power rangers bell, Mr. Tuffy tire liners, all sorts of gizmos... Let me be a bit of a devils advocate here. If you want to get exercise, why would you get a high performance bike? Mightn't you be better off with a heavy clunker that really forces you to pedal and burn calories? The bike you are contemplating is a fine machine, but how wise is it for you to lay down over a grand when you are not yet thoroughly into the hobby? I'm not telling you what to do here, only offering an alternative. If the Trek really takes your fancy and you can afford it, of course go for it. On the other hand, one of these hybrid bikes with medium sized tires and cheap, reliable shimano gears, derailleur, etc might well give you a more comfortable, if slower ride, and you wouldn't be worrying all the time that someone's gonna swipe it, or sweating every little ding that comes along. In any case, have fun with your new ride! It's a very hip, ecological thing thing to be doing and great for your health.

Got mine yesterday. Wow. This is nirvana.

The playing is good but the sound quality not too good on the cd. There are a lot of better recordings from this period.

I used to listen to Willis Conover's pgms on VOA on shortwave when I lived in Taiwan in the 80's. He had some good interviews. I particularly remember one with Bill Evans. I would love to hear some of those pgms again. As I recall he had a regular jazz pgm and another one called Standards.

Finally got mine from Music Media, around $50. Well packed, arrived in good shape and fairly fast. It has the 'concert band' on the spine and unfortunately the defect on disk 6. I noticed some scoring on the surface of the disk. Possibly the machine they used caused a scratch or they had a batch of bad disks. The disk was rather difficult to copy for my offsite backup (cubby at work) - Easy CD creator choked completely but an IBM cd copying program I had was able to copy it at a very slow speed. The copy still has the stutter on the first track. This was mildly disappointing but I don't think I'll bother returning for the one track. The good news is the set is great! I only had the Swinging Guitar and one other date on Prestige I think. This set changes my whole impression of Farlow and now I see what all the fuss is about. Some really great playing on this. Thanks everyone for the tip.

Andrew Hill Select "talk about THE MUSIC" thread
Jerry replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ordered this yesterday. I'm really looking forward to hearing it. Lean times. The last cd I bought was Snurdy about 6 mos ago. -
Moose, make your way down to Gilroy or even Morgan Hill. Every Safeway and Alberson's parking lot has sweet little Mexican ladies selling homemade tamales out of the back of a car. I like the cheese and jalapeno ones...

Retire? Hey I think for a large percentage of boomers the retirement plan is: death!

The DVD with Tina Brooks, is that "O Genio - Live in Brazil 1963"?

I find them to be a very good source of those cheap, cloth-bound, zip-up CD wallets which I use to hold copies of my collection at work. And candy by Wonka like Runts and Nerds.

Personally I don't care if an offer to trade is someone's first post, or even if he calls me brother (though that's a bit tacky). I'm mystified, astounded, by turns amused and aghast at the notion of someone listening to the Mobley Mosaic once and wanting to trade it. Huh? How is that possible? I demand that he listen to it again!

Thanks, Mike, for the the reply. I guess I am going to plunk for this since it's one of my favorite Blue Note sessions.

Has anyone actually compared the mosaic with the new reissue? The mosaic was mastered by McMaster. The bass on the mosaic does not sound bad to me.

Um, did I miss something? What did Tom actually say?

Here's how it looks on the bike path I ride to work. Near Coyote, California.

I like this album too. I'm listening to the Mosaic now. I sometimes think Dave Holland's later work was influenced by the playing on this. All of the Rivers Bluenotes should be reissued as RVG's or Conns. I actually bought two extra copies of the Mosaic to give to friends because I think this music is so important.

Does anyone know if they are going to include any of the second Japanese concert with Sam Rivers? I'd love to hear that.

The last time I saw him in Seattle he handed his sticks to the youngest member of the audience when it was over. He then handed out several more pairs to kids in the audience. I very seldom stayed for the second show at Jazz Alley but when Elvin plays you can't leave.

Check out Gilberto Gil, another Brazilian great.

Listening to and enjoying the impulse album: Count Basie and the Kansas City 7. I really love Freddie Green. Too bad you can't always hear him clearly.

A friend asked me a few years ago to take his guitar back to the luthier who made it for repair, guy named Steven Andersen in Seattle. Small shop, wonderful smells of wood. He let me try a couple of his archtops and I was immediately hooked. Unfortunately the price is way out of my league at the moment so I'm hangin on to my 1970 Martin D-18 and saving up. http://www.andersenguitars.com/

Amazingly, Joe Pass had short and stubby fingers. I shook hands with him in New York once. A very nice man who encouraged me when he heard I played guitar. Of course I went home after seeing him feeling like I could never play again!

I grew up in the 50's with the Capitol Sinatra albums w/ Nelson Riddle playing on my parents phonograph. I've always loved those albums. The other day I happened on the 62 Reprise album Sinatra-Basie at my local public library. Wow. This band has a way of making me like tunes like Pennies from Heaven, which I have always been pretty lukewarm about. Even better in some ways than the Nelson Riddle stuff. Looser and more jazzy. Question: how are the other two Basie/Sinatra recordings: It Might as Well Be Swing (another studio album) and Live at the Sands?
