I just read about it in Pitchfork and saw the list of judges. I bet he's the envy of all of his engineering friends.

I haven't had a problem with them but I have with CD Universe and Djangos before. These places don't want to receive calls but provide the instructions on the back of the invoice. Mailing the disc back with a note is the way they work. Yourmusic.com's return policy starts with "10.Returns:" "Damaged, defective or incorrect selections must be returned within 30 days. You may also return other unopened CD within 30 days after you receive it. Returns of opened CDs that arrive back to us without a note explaining that they are damaged or defective will not be accepted." Check your invoice and the online link for more instructions as that just hit some highlights (or lowlights). FWIW I once bought a 3 disc DVD set and as I was slow working thru it didn't discover that I had 2 disc 2s until 2 months later with Deepdiscount. They fixed the problem dispite the length of time. So yourmusic.com might if you include a nice note (at least for the disc that was their mistake.) I doubt they want to risk pissing you off from their business. Also, no guarantees, but if you are stuck in a phone tree at BMG not pressing a button on your phone might work at getting a human. I've heard that after some period of time the system assumes you are using a rotary and will kick you out to a human. (This is for trees in general, not BMG's system.) Whether that human is helpful, and how long that takes is anybody's guess. Good luck!

Not dead, just resting. Like Chris said, it's just a dead time of year (even for new releases.) There will be Conns sometime, and hats. I'm kinda curious what Columbia might release just because it seems to be a more mysterious process. Or maybe it's just Blue Note talk drowns it out. Speaking of Blue Note, from other threads here's a reminder of what's coming RVG-wise: February 2007 (6 RVGs) Lou Donaldson - Lush Life (7 tracks) Kenny Drew - Undercurrent (6 tracks) Johnny Griffin - Introducing (bonus tracks) (8 tracks) Duke Pearson - The Right Touch (bonus track) (7 tracks) Horace Silver - You Gotta Take A Little Love (7 tracks) Stanley Turrentine - The Spoiler (bonus track) (7 tracks) March 2007 Donald Byrd - The Cat Walk (6 tracks) Dexter Gordon - Clubhouse (6 tracks) Andrew Hill - Compulsion (4 tracks) Thad Jones - Detroit-New York Junction (5 tracks) Jackie McLean - New And Old Gospel (3 tracks) Art Taylor - A.T.'s Delight (6 tracks)

So How You Feelin' This Holiday Season?
Quincy replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've felt better about the holiday in recent years by not caring as much about what I give. Don't get me wrong, with some family members I spend a lot of time thinking about and hunting down (sometimes even making) the right gift, but I just don't let it get to me. You try your best but if you fail to be creative its not the end of the world. This year I mostly avoided the awful holiday music by shopping online more or going to the hippie Holiday Market on weekends. So the annoyances of the season are gone, and that's big for me as that's what I tend to feel about the season in recent years. I'm not religious, but in a way the spiritual element of Christmas is sort of an extension of Thanksgiving for me. I feel very fortunate to have my health and to be alive with ears that work and plenty of music for the ears to enjoy. I've had too many friends & family members in recent years who have had health problems (some died), so good health shouldn't be underestimated or go unappreciated. It's also a time to be reminded (shaken down) by charities to write checks again, and you know the old saying, better to give than receive. Also like Thanksgiving there's a meal, and in this case we do the Oregon thing of having Dungeness crab. It's quicker than cooking a big bird so there's more time to enjoy playing board games or other fun things during the day. It would be easy enough to get sad over the loss of a more traditional magic of Christmas I suppose, but nah, I rather like our reformed mostly secular bastardization. We did happen upon A Charlie Brown Christmas last night and both commented on how we hadn't seen it over 10 years, maybe more. Couldn't help but smile over parts of it, and good Old Charlie Brown was yet another reminder that lots of folks have trouble with the holiday. -
All sorts of things. Sometimes spontaneous, but sometimes threads here can get me to pick something out. Or I'll be walking downtown and it hit me that I should play such 'n' such when I get home. Sometimes I'll get stumped by all the possibilities. If that happens usually I'll run my fingers along a section and try to pick something that hasn't been played in awhile. I may end up playing DJ and keep pulling things out, listening to just a track or 2 and moving on until something sticks. I'll do this with vinyl too. Or both formats at the same time. But usually I stick with what I picked. I have favorites that I return to even though I have a pile of new music that hasn't gotten played yet. I don't let that bother me. The perpetual hunt is that, but I'm trying to calm down and catch up a bit, at least until the next sale or must have new release/reissue. But first I need to buy a few more Deluxe Editions (those Marvin Gayes!) at yourmusic before they raise prices a buck a disc. As far as computing and music, I must say getting a laptop was a terrific thing. No loud computer fan and now I'm in the stereo room, which is also the warmest room in this drafty old house. Plus I have a hookup from the laptop to the stereo as well, so it's become part of it as well for dimeadozen downloads or internet radio.

How does your spouse react to your hobby/obsession?
Quincy replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
No problems here whatsoever. My partner was a Deadhead whose tastes leaned towards '60s rock due to older siblings. I introduced to her to a few more modern bands when we first got together 17 years ago. Jazz has become a bigger part of the collection over the years. She doesn't like "noisy" music like Ayler or AEC, and she doesn't seem to care for hard bop, or at least with prominent trumpet. She really likes Blanton-Webster Ellington and Billie Holiday, and a good part of the H.R.S. sessions. I've taken this as an opportunity to spend more on early jazz! As she's not an active pursuer of music I've been better about using yourmusic to upgrade some of our beat-up albums by Traffic and so forth for her. And as I used to be a very busy trader I've added a ton of Dead and other shows by her old favorites along with things I introduced her to long ago like I.R.S. era R.E.M. No problems in the music department, or really anywhere else. Life is good. -
And it worked! Hey kids, it's the bitchin'-est mixtape collection of the century from last century! Or in the case of Vol. 1, the past 2 centuries.

Not trade related, and not always about baseball, but some of you might find Uniwatchblog interesting. The Dec. 14 entry has a lot of links to older uniforms along with commentary. If things like seeing the late '30s Cubs road jerseys with underlined insignia interest you, this is the site for you. During the World Series the author went into detail about how the "D" in Detroit's hat didn't match the one on the jersey, and gave examples of the changes throughout the years. Just something else to get through the offseason.

The guy who played the whacky DJ originally appeared on a few episodes of The Bob Newhart Show as one of Bob's patients. Howard Hesseman. Yeah, that was a riot to have him show up. When WKRP first ran as a show I recognized him as that guy who was in Billy Jack. For some horrid reason Billy Jack was a really cool movie when I was in grade school. I think I was forced to see about 4 times by the time I was in junior high. Oof! Add me to the list who had a crush on Bailey. Her IMDB bio notes she was married to the current Mr. Barbara Streisand for 9 years after WKRP ended.

If you convert your discs to FLAC it could free up approximately 300 jewel cases, give or 50 or so. It depends on how much music is on those discs of course. If you were to put a lot of OJCs that don't have bonus tracks you could save even more shelf space. WinAmp, MacAmp and the like can play the FLAC files and you won't lose any fidelity, yet you save crucial space compared to WAV. I'm assuming that you are keeping the discs and are merely looking to box them up and put them somewhere out of the way. The beauty of silver CDs is that you don't have to mess with disc drive tools to retrieve the information, or worry about the plug accidentally getting pulled on the drive and messing things up. Picking the music to go on the drive is tricky. Do you pick mainly titles with ugly artwork & crappy liner notes? Or do you go with Mosaics, as some people play box sets more when it's all on a handy hard drive?

"From near the middle of the mitten." How sad. My condolences to his family and friends.

My copy arrived today from yourmusic. After the 1st disc was finished my sig other says that she really liked what was playing. I pull out the accordian out of the metal box* and say "that's good, cause there are 5 more discs." Great when the music pleases the both of us. *referring to the packaging for anyone not familiar with the set.

Well alright! That'll make the '07 season more interesting!

I agree on Jennings be a dandy pick up. I like the way he increased his strikeouts last year and at age 28 one would think he's entering his prime years. His one injury (at least of note) was a broken middle finger, so it's not like his career is hanging on a suspect elbow ligament. I'd rather have Jennings than Garland or Wang, as guys with low K's and low K/BB ratios tend to fade away (or make you wish they would quit altogether.)

When Gil Meche gets 55 mil for 5 from the ROYALS the math changes. What happened to the "darkest before the dawn" feelings? There's still time yet, isn't there? Guess we'll find out. The worst that happens is that the 2nd filthy richest team in baseball doesn't get the unproven MLB gyroball plus you kept him from being a Yankee. I think that may have been John Henry's modus after all, that a 50 million block is cheaper than signing the s.o.b. As far as the M's, they did pick up head case OF Jose Guillen. A nice wild roll of the dice I think, though the clubhouse chemistry goes further cuckoo.

What are your recommendations for hard bop big band records?
Quincy replied to Dmitry's topic in Recommendations
It took you 3 posts to bring this up? Good stuff! (and thanks!) -
More like 2 minutes per, those are only 30 minute time slots you know! 8 did seem like a stretch, but give 'em a few more years. I did think it was more than 2, though snip the theme song and the opening joke (from the early years at least) and not too much is lost from Seinfeld. 50-51 minutes of show out of an hour is amazing! Hell, even commercial-free PBS might not being doing that nowadays.
-
While I agree with you in that I've seen them (well, not Friends ) enough to not buy such boxes you do realize that they cut out something like 5 to 8 minutes or so of each episode. So those George reaction shots and so forth get snipped away. The "true" fans want it unadulterated.

Went thru a couple of 6 week periods where King Crimson dominated things. Mostly a mix between '73-4 and post-'81, but some earlier material got played too. Quite a bit of '30s and earlier jazz got played too. Teagarden, Bix & Tram, Django & Duke & Bechet being the primaries, though thanks to Mr. Lowe's fine Devilin' sets all sorts of other artists from the era got thrown into the mix too. I think I'll have to get the Venuti & Lang Mosaic in '07 as I apparently can't get enough. Let's see, well, pick a Thelonious, any Thelonious still works. Otherwise all over the map. Some that got multiple plays include Bootsy Collins era James Brown, Cat Power & Neko Case, The Cellar Door box, Steve Lacy hatOLOGY releases, Bartok, Pavement (brought on by the Wowee Zowie reissue), Fela Kuti, Hank WIlliams Sr. (finally picked up the complete box) and a fuggin' shitload of $3 OJCs, with the West Coast pickups bringing special joy (yo Steve White!)

Everything. Christmas should be like the Olympics - just have it every four years. (And I am not a Scrooge, and weirdly enough I'm already done with shopping, but it's a tiring concept & holiday. I could use a break from it.)

I came oh so close, but then I remembered I packed my Mosaics and will just have to make do with the Columbia set.
