Depends on where you are in the state. Coastal range mountains (where they were) gets some, Cascades can get lots. Same with Mt. Hood, and parts of eastern Oregon. Willamette Valley sees very little, though sometimes we get some flakes that stick for a few hours. We got it just about it all here. One thing that's been brought up is perhaps internet mapping let them down. Forest roads don't provide info to such services that spell out that a road is impassable during the winter. When in the west, get yourself a "real" map. Like gslade said that general area has seen people get in trouble before. Some think they can take a shortcut, but that only works in the summer (or the edges of spring & fall when snow isn't a threat.) Aside from the weird story last year of the elderly AZ RV drivers with arrest warrents, there was also someone who took a spur off a forest road and was found dead months after the snow melted. Very sad story. We got an extra day or so of coverage as it was local news.

It may be a pokey way of doing things, but if you check the setlists at phillesh.com it'll show who was in the band at the bottom of each setlist (or at least a couple that I looked at.)

On my deserted island I have unlimited access to Riverside, Prestige, Contemporary, hats, and so forth. So I'll get my Dolphy, Rollins, Ornette elsewhere. Still, it's tough. Despite the above conditions I'll still double up on the Monk. Apologies to Midnight Blue, Somethin' Else, Right Now!, Amazing Bud Powells, Hill and so on. Blakey Birdland Vol. 1 Dexter Gordon - Our Man In Paris Grant Green - Idle Moments Herbie Hancock - Empyrean Isles Bobby Hutcherson - Components Jackie McLean - Let Freedom Ring Monk Genius Vol. 1 Monk - Genius Vol. 2 Ike Quebec - It Might As Well Be Spring Sam Rivers - Fuchsia Swing Song I a mixup in shipping to the island occured and I get Indestructable! & Go instead I wouldn't complain.

I love it too. It's a great stealth Harold Land mini-Select and Gerald Wilson too.

And I decided to save myself $9 and picked up the Billie Holiday Verve and the Roger Miller box. I'll probably get the deluxe version James Brown Live At The Apollo II before the month is out too and perhaps some other 2 disc sets, but since the shipping is free I might as well wait a bit longer and give myself a chance to listen to the above first. And I'll be sticking with 'em after the increase. It may be an old fashioned concept, but I kinda like getting a disc a month in the mail.

I won't really review the show, other than to say it ain't bad. However, I feel forever indebted to the show from saving me from a possible beating by a psychopath. A few years ago I was at a tavern meeting up with about 10 other traders of unreleased music (primarily Dead at the time.) I had a copy of 12/31/76 in front of me to share and I had printed out some colorful artwork for it so it was eye-catching. This tavern is in an "eclectic" neighborhood (in other words it's overrun with degenerates) and as sometimes happened someone not quite right in the head sat down amongst us, in fact right across from me. He was a big guy and right away he started acting anxious & paranoid. I tried "talking him down" and suggesting more reality based explanations to his far off hallucinations but he wasn't very receptive and he started to threaten to punch me and others. This went on for about 10 minutes and was really getting stressful for me but I kept my cool. The all of the sudden he looks down at the back of the case of 12/31/76 that is in front of me. I flip it around for him and looks at the setlist. I can tell he's confused, and his left index finger is touching near "Sugar Magnolia," seemingly out of place as it leads off the 2nd set rather than the more likely place of ending the set. So without him even asking I about it I said "Sugar Magnolia was Bill Graham's favorite song so they lead off the 2nd set with it in his honor." (Of all things just a week earlier a friend had told me this bit of trivia.) The guy smiled and suddenly settled down a little. Then he was distracted by something to his right for a moment, and I took the opportunity to grab my discs & get up and move to another table. He ended up getting kicked out by the bartender 5 minutes later and didn't punch anybody, but I figure there's a good chance that 12/31/76 saved my teeth!

Check out how she was 10 years ago. Nude As The News on youtube Love that geetar. She was famous for her stage fright and meltdowns during shows but she sobered up this year and those things are apparently a thing of the past. And now all bronzed and beautiful (and helpless dancer, though I love it) on Letterman earlier this year: Living Proof on youtube The Greatest & her covers albums are very accessible. Moon Pix, You Are Free and What Would The Community Think are less so but may be more rewarding, though you'll likely have to spend more time with them to figure them out (if you ever do.) She's not married either. She noted in the NY Times during her self-imposed detox that she had Miles on repeat while in her apartment, leading a friend of mine to email me with "Clean and sober. Miles on repeat and ready to settle down. Are your bags packed?" -
I have the July 19, 1987 show. It is not the worst I have heard, but it still solicits a few cringes from me. Indeed it does. Of all things despite Kesey's presence on the scene I've heard it was a bottle of bourbon that is behind Bob's cringe inducing moments. It was a beautiful sunny day in Eugene, and it sure was fun to see them all assembled on the stage together. There was the potential that something great could happen, it just didn't. Still a good time was had in person.

As you revealed in post #16 that you're enjoying other"old" (around here that = pre-hard bop) jazz and looking for more that changes things. One, it makes the Mosaic a more reasonable/safer entry choice because of Tea and your enjoyment, but it also means maybe picking something cheaper/smaller as you may want to check out other sets of older artists. Ain't this fun. Sharing my own relatively young experience in pre-WWII jazz I must say that after being very satisfied with the Bix/Tram/Tea Mosaic my next Mosaic set will probably be the Venuti/Lang. I once thought that maybe one of those inexpensive 3 or 4 disc sets would do instead, but having heard Lang with Tea on what I have and other samples, yes I really do want the big honking super-sized Mosaic of Venuti/Lang. As others have said as you are interested in Teagarden, I'd say the meter's clock hand now favors Mosaic over JSP, unless you are budgeting for more early music by other artists too. Whatever you decide, keep Mosaic in mind for 2007's jazz budget! You can't go wrong either way you go. Or with Eldridge, H.R.S....Clementine also posted about an upcoming early jazz bass-centric set in another thread to consider too for exploration of early music. Budget long-term, pick something and enjoy! Oh yes, Allen Lowe's "That Devilin' Tune" set 2 and/or 1 come highly recommended here too. Set 2 is more accessible as it's newer stuff ('27-34) as opposed to '1895-'27, though the latter is also full of enjoyable music along with historically interesting music (not necessarily exclusive things.) All depends on how early you want to go. The '00s thru '30s still is fairly new to me too and I'm loving it. It's vital music that invigorates the brain and jumpstarts the heart. While a bit later than you're looking at with Bix, budget for Django too if you haven't (and start a JSP vs. Mosaic thread there too. As with Bix I have both. )

Minute Mud is natural grass. Manny hitting in that park should be illegal! He'll destroy the Crawford boxes with his hits.

Weird ! Funny, but weird! Yeah, the first time someone gave me the link I scratched my head and didn't go back for awhile. But now I'm addicted. They've been having one a day now for a couple of weeks. Sometimes they miss (or I don't get it), but it's a good silly (and usually topical) addition to the morning web baseball-go-round. They capture the "Jeter as punk" persona perfectly, and Jim Thome often appears as a warm-hearted goofy half-wit. I like it!

I started with a used copy of the JSP. When Mosaic had the Bix on sale last August I finally picked that up. Both sound excellent given the time of the recordings. The more you listen to them, the better you'll be at either appreciating some of the vocals or filtering them out. The tipping point for me for getting the Mosaic was to get more Teagarden. Sure, there are other ways to accomplish that, but to have it wrapped up in black & white made it an easy decision. I'd lean towards working your way up to the Mosaic (or Bix Restored), just because I think it might be more enjoyable to start with an appetizer rather than a feast.

The Dugout's "Chat Room" take on Jeter's Gold Glove. Looks like they were wrong about MVP though.
-
But Jeter had a better year at the plate. So of course he deserved the Gold Glove. Thanks for clearing that up. Maybe I used the wrong emoticon. It's an old joke about the Gold Gloves. Ah, thank you Baseball Reference. The most famous case of GG idiocy was in 1999 when Rafael Palmeiro won at 1st base. He played 28 games at 1st. No, that is not a typo. Twenty-eight games at 1st and he won the Gold Glove. He did hit 47 HRs however, which is how the Gold Glove is measured.

What are the most popular Mosaics?
Quincy replied to mikelz777's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Do the sets with more discs have a better chance of being mentioned as well? Not surprised at the J.J. and Anita ranking highly as you just can't get people to shut up about those sets around here. -
The ol' memory's still got some kick!

I have that nightmare too. Sometimes I can't remember which locker is mine but I do know the combination. If that isn't a sign of having too much buys work I don't know what is. -

I'm very impressed. Unless you're 19. Sad to say I once forgot my combo after X-Mas vacation. Oof! -
I knew it was Bonnie that threw the punch, I think I used to know it was Stills instead of Crosby. I love Crosby's work with the Byrds and "If I Could Only Remember My Name," but I bet when he was pickling his liver he must have been annoying beyond belief, hence the switcheroo on my part. The fact it was Stills doing the badgering (or not badgering, depending on the version) makes Costello's outburst even more understandable to me. Stills comes across as a short-tempered pig in most of the interviews I've seen or read. He was lucky Stills just walked away. (There's some concert film from the '60s, perhaps at Big Sur where Stills just wails on a hippie for seemingly no reason. Warning - this may be another inaccurate memory as I'm sure I was stoned when I saw the film.) You aren't kidding! That part I remember accurately. As far as the story goes I've heard so many different versions over the years that I'm lucky if I get the rock musicians present right. It looks like you typed up Elvis's version so thanks for that.
-
I've always been suspicious about Nomar's health (hey, who isn't), but to hit the way he did at Dodger Stadium really impressed me. Although the injury risk is obvious, the other risk is that he'll be like Paul Molitor and finally shake the injury bug when he's 33 or 34 and seal the deal on with the rest of his career as a Hall of Famer. With aging injury-prone athletes I tend to be a pessimist, but I'm glad not everyone is!
-
Well, there goes any lingering respect I might have had for Costello (never liked his music anyway). I enjoy Elvis and never knew about the above......poor judgement and lack of class on his part for sure! m~ Elvis was on tour and extremely drunk in a bar with Bonnie Bramlett & David Crosby in Columbus Ohio. Hell, that alone could set one off. They had been baiting Elvis with putdowns of British rock and he replied in kind. The comment people forget about (though apparently not the only one) is before the Charles remark he called James Brown a "jive-ass nigger." He obviously went nuclear in a drunken cultural sniping fest. I think there's enough evidence otherwise that he knows & loves the music by both Brown & Charles, hence probably why the story is mostly forgotten.

There was some essay by someone whose name escapes me though I'm certain he's overrated as it may have been in Spin. I think he determined that Loveless was rated just right, in part because it only sold 200k copies. I love the Ramones but I'd venture that as a group they're probably the most overrated. (Can't pick one album cause you know, one or two exceptions they all sound the same.) But then I guess I'm just a jizz lovin' Anglophile. POW!
