  1. Hey wait a minute, let's not get carried away. You're insulting the NBA with this kind of talk. Lest we forget the great almighty NFL once allowed replacement player games to count in the standings. Crap, the way some people act you'd think Benjamin Franklin played in & founded the league or something.
  2. Based on some Konitz videos posted here I think they just did that to keep the young whippersnapper from telling jokes in-between songs. Nice find!
  3. I've run into this with some other outfits that aren't associated with Amazon. It brings back the feeling of being a kid and opening a present that ends up being socks when 2 days after getting the shipped notice you get another one which this time really means shipped. Then it just sits there, ends up traveling by ground and disappears from tracking for 4 days out to Oregon. My favorite trick is by the Grateful Dead's dead.net store. It's not uncommon for them to send a shipping email 2 days after your package has arrived.
  4. That would be a great way to hook a 12 year old boy into classical music. Of course how the kid would run into the advert I don't know. I hope they're running an ad in Creepy Comics or whatever the modern day equivalent is.
  5. Also 3 as I have a cousin who worked on a Speilberg project. This was some relief as otherwise the connection is through orgassimo's favorite son Ken Burns.
  6. Beckett out on the old 9-3.
  7. This is what I'm doing as well, but I haven't dumped the individual old ones until the new ones are available. This series isn't going to be over until we reach the 50th anniversary at the rate they're going though. It was a bold move of faith on my part! I haven't been that way since. I still have my Burnt Weenie Ryko for instance.
  8. 9 of the CDs are live recordings most of which are dodgy quality. Some have been Club releases, a few were DGM downloads and some are boots that they've tried to improve. I stopped at the Zoom Club release myself. As far as the price goes compared to other sets the price per pound isn't too bad. I'm still leaning towards the 2 disc set. I sold off the 30th Anniversary discs some time ago as I've greatly enjoyed the previous 40th releases because of the DVD-As, Wilson remixes and extras.
  9. It doesn't help in JohnS's case as he notes the computer reads it as a blank, but if you ever come across one that isn't playing music be sure to check and see if it can be ripped on a PC. I've come across borrowed CDRs from long ago that wouldn't play but could be ripped and the resulting new CDR played (& ripped) just fine. And to repeat other good advice, always try more than one player. But sometimes a bad disc is a bad disc.
  10. No, you can save playlists (or whole albums as playlists) so you should be able find & play whatever you want when you want. Your own music on your computer that isn't on Spotify can be accessed through the program as well. Why not try it out - the ad supported version is free.
  11. There won't be millions of people looking at your FB page. *#@&(!.
  12. Way to go bluesforBartok! It's a fun app which encourages that seemingly long gone desire to "surf" around connecting the dots as it were between sidemen and leaders, etc. The coverflow through era is delightful & purdy! The "Blues Break Beats" is going to be educational for me as while I've known about sampling of Blue Note songs I haven't heard that many implementations. Very nicely done and it's the type of thing that may reinvigorate what had been a hibernating interest in Blue Note jazz. Thank you so much!
  13. Since we can't wait until next year the Mariners have released their 2013 schedule (okay, actually all teams have) and their home opener is against...the Astros! Yes, we knew the 'stros as an AL West team was coming but boy does it look mighty strange to see them penciled in for early April. Also since seeing the M's lose in person they've gone 15-10. (Thank you, thank you). Who ever would have imagined they'd have a better record than Boston? Well...maybe Dan.
  14. Given the type of editing that's been done in the past with live release I'm impressed it only took 5 years. I'm wondering how long it will take for The Garden Tapes site to figure it all out, um, assuming O2 is being released. Oh, and I don't intend that to sound snarky as I'm all in favor of creating something out of live tapes that's better than the reality of the show, though I do think it was a mistake to erase Plant's dippy yet brilliant between song patter on past releases.
  15. Outside magazine has two articles out that explain not just that Lance used EPO but how he was a pioneer in cheating. It's not just one anonymous person with accusations but teammates coming out as well. You'll also learn that passing 500 drug tests means nothing when the tests are a joke. It's a short article and recommended. Lance's Secret Is Out - Outside magazine. Also via The Browser (a great site for gathering up some of the best of the web daily in a dozen links a day) which I have not read yet: My Life With Lance Armstrong - Mike Anderson It's pretty obvious why Lance gave up the fight.
  16. I assume this is what ZFT will do. Otherwise, there is no explanation for them not fixing it now - it is one of the most most notoriously botched 1995 CD reissues in the whole FZ catalog. But I guess they will wait at least a year. Looks like these new reissues are selling well (judging by amazon sales rankings, at least), so I hope ZFT will reinvest the money into more archival reissues. I couldn't help myself and picked up Waka/Jawaka too today at the local store for about $11.25. For ones I'm rebuying (Weenie & Rats) I've been trying to spend under $10, even if it's just a penny under. Best Buy had the 1st round releases selling for $9.99 (free shipping) but only some of the second round have been priced that low. So hooray for the local indie having below internet prices this Labor Day Weekend. This reissue series has caused me to listen to what I already have on vinyl & CD (well some of it, as there's quite a bit of Zappa) and it inspired me to finally order Greasy Love Songs and Imaginary Diseases, both of which I had been intending to do for some time but in the past was too grumpy about the price.
  17. Some of the releases are starting to be released as they were, both with this batch and for the original Ruben & The Jets one can go through Barfko-Swill and get the Greasy Love Songs release which adds some stuff at the end. Although they have "boutique" prices there have been some very good releases (and some that aren't so swell). I've still seen prices like $75 to $100+ on some of the early LPs, that's all I was saying about pricing. Because of this recent surprise remastering series some have hope that Barfko may finally offer Uncle Meat in a closer to original form, for instance. Burnt Weenie on this go round does indeed sound better than the Ryko which I never released sounded not so good. To call that anything less than A level is something I don't understand at all, but to each his own, as opinions on Zappa vary wildly. I've been using this go round to pick up things I didn't have, such as Chunga's Revenge and Zoot Allures. Crap, how did I live without "Transylvania Boogie" all these years? Zappa is someone who I can go almost 2 years without listening to at all for all of the reasons people complain about, and then I'll have roughly a week, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter, where he's just about all I can listen to. And then it goes into remission again. Lately I've found the classic Mothers stuff to be almost intolerable (except when they shut up and play) and surprisingly enjoying some of the skankier later '70s-early '80s humor bits in-between the playing. It could be that living in we're-more-sustainable-and-PC-than-you Eugene during an election year has so fucking fried my circuits that I need it to balance my brain. For those who are interested in the music thus far everything that is listed as "analog master" has sounded terrific. The lukepac link above will not let you down. I'm now off to buy Sleep Dirt.
  18. I think that'd still be an expensive proposition for most anything pre-'80, unless you mean good as a grade as opposed to sounding good.
  19. This. Usually guys get jinxed after a comment like that. He had a Lawrence Welk game. An' a one, an' a two, an' a three...
  20. Anytime someone of this age or status kills himself surely don't you think it's likely due to the diagnosis of an incurable prolonged disease? That's the case here as it was inoperable brain cancer. So rather than wither away with tubes, a bedpan and machines that incessantly go beep, he ended it. It's sad that he had to face this but more power to him that he went out on his own terms.
  21. Mr. Hemroids of 1980. 2 of the title were won on the final day of the season. In 1980 he couldn't be caught.
  22. I wonder if Cardinal announcer Mike Shannon has set a record for most games over 18 innings. For once the Braves or Mets weren't involved too.
  23. I'm going Roberto, just because he had a little less power (thus thinking a little more average) plus Forbes Field was so nuts. Triple city in right for when he went the other way. I like the Oliva guess second.
  24. This was before your time but we once had a dedicated steroid thread for Bonds. Mod Larry Kart wasted too much of time trimming out the obscenities and such as it reflected poorly on the band that this site is named for. I believe it was eventually locked. Anyway, nothing will convince Goodspeak that Bonds was a user, that 'roids cause a ball to travel farther, and so on. Yeah, I know. So while you didn't get to "enjoy" this discussion maybe it'd be better not to go back into the past of PED use in baseball, as you'd have better luck changing the "mind" of the wall across from you than that of Goodspeak.
