Given how drunk & drugged up Jim could be, I was kind of impressed how they pulled that off as it's not easy to play with horns & strings when it's not your usual thing. Maybe Robbie was got the black eye for messing up in practice.

Solo is around 2:30. *Edited to add this is The Smothers Brothers Show. I believe the band was banned from Ed's show after keeping "higher" in the lyrics of "Light My Fire."
  3. Read the label on the Mexican Coke as some do indeed contain HFCS rather than sugar. A recent article in the WSJ (I think) suggested that that may become more common in Mexico due to costs, though now that China is having to import corn perhaps it won't be. There's a chance that because so many Americans think that cane sugar is "healthy" that Coke & Pepsi may go back to sugar full time and stop using HFCS someday. The mandated use of ethanol, along with poor grain yields in the Eastern hemisphere this year are changing the old cost advantages of corn vs. the usual artificially high price of sugar in the US. Given it's a way to sell an old product as new you'd think they'd go for it in a big way, but I guess it runs the risk of admitting that they've been selling an inferior product for the past 25 some odd years.
  4. Yeah, the annoucners refer to Phillips recent quotes about hating the Cards which can be found on Deadspin (or maybe SportsByBrooks). La Russa's retort was that the Reds have a lot of ex-Cards on the roster, though he failed to note that the big one is Rolen who didn't care for Tony at all. It's a good race between those 2 teams, and the NL WC could come from any of the divisions though last I looked the West has the slight lead. And in a sign of I'm older than I think I am, I hadn't realized that the Reds hadn't been in the playoffs in 15 years. Though I suppose I had "counted" the year they lost the 1 game playoff as a playoff year. Nice to see some high strung emotions from somewhere other than the AL East! And hey hey, the M's score 2 and win. Wooooooooo...watch out Texas! Jury duty for me tomorrow...oops, wrong thread.
  5. Gee, was it just a week ago he got a vote of confidence? Classic. While in spring I may not have thought the M's had a lock on the division with 2 aces, I did have high hopes for Ichiro & Figgins in the lineup. I figured at least they'd be fun to watch replicating a little bit of '80s Cardinal "Whiteyball." Ah well, nothing like rebuilding yet again.
  6. Oooo that's eerie. Just last night I was reading an excerpt from a new biography about Roald Dahl that covers a dark period in his life. Part of it touches on her stroke and recovery. Link to article.
  7. Yup, and Bill Simmons took a look at game length a week or so ago. A sample from the article where I'll destroy the formatting, so you might as well see the column: "1975 Red Sox
 2 hours or less -- 12 games
 2:01-2:30 -- 62
 2:31-3:00 -- 63
 3:01-4:00 -- 18 (4 extra innings)
More than 4 -- 2 (both extras) (Note: Twelve games that ended in less than two hours!!!!!! Are you kidding me? And 137 of the 162 games ended in less than three hours.) . 2007 Red Sox
 2 or less -- 0
2:01-2:30 -- 11
2:31-3:00 -- 48
 3:01-4:00 -- 97 (5 extra)
More than 4 -- 6 (2 extra) (Note: Uh-oh. One-hundred three of 162 games dragging past three hours??? Call it the Tipping Point ... as in, "I'm tipping over because I just fell asleep." I blame the recent frenzy of milking pitch counts, the constant preening between pitches and more frequent pitching changes. Yes, I look forward to those arguments being struck down by an angry blogger within the next 48 hours.) . . . I'll write that again: The 2010 Boston Red Sox have played one game in four months that ended in less than 150 minutes."
  8. And the live '74. And live on stage in Nov. '81 where he was shutting up & playing his guitar w/ Steve Vai. Ah memories.... Burnt Weeny may be my favorite album but mercy mercy he (actually "they" but I'm talking about Frank) had sinister chops when I saw him. I also have a soft spot for the the anti-fundi sides 3 & 4 of You Are What You Is. I really needed to hear that then. Oh damn it's another Frank across the ages thread...
  9. That's 4 times in 9 days that the Mariners have been shut out. 2 great pitchers & a great defense wins you a division every time. This team is so sad. Good thing I don't watch them.
  10. May there be a Porcupine in your tree. Happy birthday!
  11. Happy birthday! And thank you Shawn.
  12. 2011. Supposedly Jan. 24th.
  13. I went to see Inception (ugh) yesterday and they had a preview for The Last Exorcism. I think the little girl needs a chiropractor more than a priest, as the horror of this movie seems to be that the devil causes major bone cracking to the possessed. I almost LOL'd it was so funny.
  14. Thank you for that, and what followed too!
  15. I'm starting to wonder if there's something to the humidor conspiracy theory.
  16. I have (make that had) a deceased friend who began our last phone call with (literally, I picked up the phone and this was the gist, not even a "hello") "Well, does this mean we no longer have to listen to their whiny moaning…" Of course it was seconds after the last out of the World Series when the Red Sox won. (He died a couple of days after W. got re-elected. Yet another thing to blame Bush for.) Between the literotia "whoa is me" bores reciting the history of losing to neuroticism that isn't as cute as Woody Allen, Red Sox (GROAN) "NATION" (a reason alone, like the fucking Rally Monkey for the Los Angeles Anaheim California Make UP YOUR FUCKING MIND Angels) is reason enough to root against the team. If it comes down to the supposed evils of the team that outspends everybody and wins vs. the team that outspends everybody but #1 but otherwise tries to play the underdog I don't want hear it. (And to defuse things for our friend Dan, I know Nintendo Nation has the money to field 10 time champions, but ineptitude and a wee bit of whoa is me bad luck has happened along the way.) Ghost, you are far too Midwestern polite to praise Alex for coming up in the clutch and giving links. I used to use his 2000 line vs. the Yanks in the ALCS (.409/.480/.773) for a friend who grew up in NYC who's out here, and he wouldn't acknowledge it as it didn't happen as a Yankee. "No pressure." Yes, Yankee fans can be obnoxious too. Anyway… GO RAYS! (Hi Paps, nice team ya got there.) A Texas - Tampa ALCS would be tough as it'd be too nice. There would be no one to root against! Kinsler is hurt again, so time for Big Al to come in and remind why he has it worse than a converted Mariner fan.
  17. Posada's road/home splits are pretty scary too. He's been a kitten away from Yankee Stadium. It's also reckless to be using one of 2 catchers on your roster as a DH, especially given his age. Lance is 34 but against righties still has some power. And old Lance is probably less of a health risk than (giggle) Nick Johnson. I haven't even checked if he's coming back or not, as if he is he's just going to get hurt again anyway.

I agree overall and would much rather get some live stuff, but there are some interesting demos out there that, if included, would sway me to buy it. The first take of "sad eyed lady" where they are making it up as it goes along would be one track that would do it for me. The one that a lot of people are waiting for, and could also be heavily marketed thru NPR etc. is a complete (or near) Basement Tapes. Not that it'd be any better than what circulates, but given all of the mythicizing that goes on with the session they'll almost run the risk of making potential buyers nauseous from all of the talking heads blathering on about it. At least one show from his born again phase sounds so great as is I doubt any work would have to be done it, so I wonder if it's practically ready to be released but they're waiting for the results of the 2012 election, or if news comes of an asteroid that's going to come close to earth.
  19. I wonder if it has to do with the Yankees having more veteran players than your typical club. A team with a few younger players in the lineup may have faced the pitcher as minor leaguers. Or not. Somebody has to come out of top or bottom of these slice & dice baseball studies.
  20. Don't get me wrong as I do like Thompson, but it seems like every review I read of his albums is 4 stars, and typically the reviewer says something about Thompson being "criminally underrated." Then when it comes time for the next review the publication lets someone else review the album and it's mentioned how much better this album compared to the last one, how underrated Thompson is, and it's given 4 stars. And so on. Only when a book (or web collection) of reviews comes out do albums get demoted to 2 or 3 stars. At least they don't do the "best album since Blood On The Tracks" like they do with Bob. More positively multi-instrumentalist Peter Zorn who appears on the live album is a joy to watch (and duh, listen to) in person. He's played with Richard in the past.
  21. That it is. I was at one of the shows that was recorded for this album, and granted it's hard to be fair towards hearing all new material for first time in a live setting, but sad to say most of the songs sounded like filler at best. He also somehow managed to write a dull song about Burning Man. The 2nd set of older songs was excellent, but that's not on this album.

Gotta tip my hat (if I were wearing one) to the music industry. After not getting SACD or DVD-A to fire up sales, nor have 5.1 become the get all either, now they're finding ways to make money with vinyl and mono mixes. :-) Though blu-ray is forward looking. And I still want my 5.1 mono.
  23. We were planning on taking the train up, catching a game one night, checking out the Hendrix museum the next. I think we'll skip the cream filling of that Oreo proposition. I've seen plenty of bad teams over the years, but even factoring in a good visiting team and Felix pitching I just don't want to pay MLB prices for this year's edition.
  24. That happens with other clubs too. It's the advantage of being new with no major league video for hitters to study. Now there's video.
  25. It's something they look for here in Oregon. At the moment I'm very tan, even on my feet from living in sandals this summer. But I'm also taking a once a week mega-dose of D as a few weeks ago I came up deficient. Get retested in another 5 weeks or so after I finish off the bottle. So it is possible to be both deficient in Vit D while being reckless w/ respect to getting too much sun w/ too little sunscreen protection.
