  1. So true, and not representative of the brewery's other much better beers. One would be better off buying their other beers and finding the artwork online for the Thelonious (or buy a hat or t-shirt instead.) The Dogfish sounds likes something they could handle as it's not that far outside of past & current brews.
  2. While having a tu/vous distinction would be more efficient, isn't this taken care by simply dropping in a "sir" or "m'am." Say a well dressed gentleman wearing a top hat and a monocle asks me if he's heading in the right direction to get to Park Place. I can answer "No sir, you need to turn right at the stoplight." I run into this type of thing in stores or offices. "Sir, you need to take a right at the end of the hall, otherwise you'll end up peeing in the janitor's closet." Whereas when I was younger it was just "You need to take a right…" I always admired the order of things in French compared to English. I'd rather first hear that it's a cow that's brown, not that there's something brown that's a cow. Maybe I know too many slow English speaking storytellers.
  3. Great show by Porcupine Tree last week in St. Louis. They opened with the beginning track of The Incident, and Steve showed both a sense humor and a sense for the dramatic as well teasing out the opening chords. It was probably a 75 minute set with no encore (The Dear Hunter got a 1/2 hour to lead things off playing at ear-bleeding volume) so it was a mini-Incident show plus some hits. Most of the fans were there for Cochise and Steve early on jokingly asked that fans of that band who didn't know PT to please at least fake interest as otherwise he'd get upset. A song later he said he was pleased at their effort, and it's not like people were standing around talking by any means. Oddly some of the Incident songs came off just a touch sloppy, and the only slightly dull moment was early on when Steve moved from guitar to piano. It seemed like they were emphasizing the metal riffs given the crowd. As noted earlier in the thread how the Fear Of A Blank Planet songs really pack a punch on the live DVD, I don't think I'm being hyperbolic by saying that they made the DVD versions almost seem like demos compared to what I saw. Man, they were just ripping those songs especially the portion of "Anesthetize" & "Sleep Together." (A nearby security guy even stopped paying attention to keeping an aisle clear and watched.) "Even Less" wasn't the long version, but it sure is an epic moment to hear those opening notes in person. From the looks of setlists I was lucky to hear it, though the trade off appears to be not getting "Russia On Ice." The Pageant is a great venue in terms of sightline & sound, plus options galore as far as sitting or standing (and all ages section too). Their copy says no one is more than 70 feet from the stage, and they have an extremely efficient bar too. All drinks gotten in well under 2 minutes. Shame they don't have the selection like out here in the NW. The bar's name is Halo, but the band did not play that one. I only lasted about 1/2 hour for Cochise. Once the acoustic came out for a power ballad, I could no longer handle the anthropological observer aspect of it and decided to hit the rooftop bar of the Moonrise. Here's the setlist, with a spoiler warning as they're keeping fairly similar when they're co-headling.
  4. Years ago I wasn't that keen on jazz vocals but it was Teagarden who turned me around. I was actually slightly disappointed that this set didn't include more vocals. So maybe that's the endorsement you need to hear. It's a little tricky deciphering the At The Roundtable session but by my rough count approximately 25% of the 4 disc set has vocals. Recommended.
  5. Lock it, kill it, nuke it, whatever you like. Don't waste another minute of your life trying to clean it up like last time.
  6. Maybe some who wanted to see them on that tour but were just a couple of years too young to go. With a DVD you have a choice to watch or not, and there's no moving multiple discs about as many Bruce shows take 3 CDs to get through. Plus the Houston show doesn't circulate as easily as a lot of the other soundboards from this tour. It's also simple enough to make CDRs of the audio too (or get it on an iPod), although like the previous DVD from the Born To Run package there's a good chance an audio only release will happen in the future. The price may not be optimal, but it's rare for a label to get the contents right on something like this.

Amy's wife Merry Clayton sang on "Gimme Shelter," the lead track from Let It Bleed (w/ the birthday cake cover). But I don't think he appeared played on it.
  8. I think it'd be easier to deal with if they rolled over (though that'd be a pisser), or (what the hell at this point) had a few more injuries just to seemingly seal the impossibility of it all. But no, they keep on trying to win and do so just enough to stay in it. Logic still says fuhgetaboutit, but it's not easy being logical as a baseball fan, even SABRy types. Even pessimistic realists can allow "if this happens & that..." scenarios to sneak into the mind. If the big money starters start pitching like the 2 "kids", it'll be all the more difficult to keep the heart out of it!
  9. I'm not even a Red Sox fan but damn, that was some big time pitching by Lester in TB. Tease the cruel impossible dream some more for Boston why don't ya? And young Price in defeat - to be that young and pitch "lousy" (10 hits in 7, but no walks, and 2 of the 3 runs were solo shots) - I'd love to have those problems as a fan. Buchholz vs. Garza on Saturday. Artie Johnson "very interesting." What can I say, you can't ignore AL East baseball all season.
  10. Good to get that out of the way now. Better that than the shoulder.
  11. Huh, I didn't even see that. Interesting that the Taping Compendium doesn't think that highly of the 2 '80 shows (5/6-7/80), at least as complete shows. Supposed to be very good versions of "The Other One," "Terrapin," and "Shakedown" though. Also kind of interesting to see no bonus discs involved with either release. I wonder if they got tired of people who are terrible at budgeting bitching about not being able to come up with funds quick enough to get them. I hope this is a big money maker for them and that it continues to fund more projects. Since it's multi-tracked that could even open up the wallets for those who have it already. I've never been a fan of the post '89 "Dark Star" - it's a "Dark Star" in name only, though I'm sure it was fun to hear the opening notes in person. And while I sympathize with Jerry being bored with just a plain old guitar, most of the time when I hear the MIDI I wish the damn thing had never been invented. Sorry Jer', but I'd rather hear a guitar solo than a trumpet solo from ya. Gee, I think I'm still slightly bitter that I was at the shows just before Hampton out at Mountain View, having missed the 1st night when they broke out "Death Don't Have No Mercy." As usual the east coast got the "Dark Star," "Attics," and the "Help>Slip>Frank" breakout. Maybe in another 21 years I'll get over it.
  12. Read the above again. DVD of Houston '78, far enough along in the tour where they have it down too! Also on DVD: THRILL HILL VAULT (1976-1978) 1. Save My Love (Holmdel, NJ 76) 2. Candy's Boy (Holmdel, NJ 76) 3. Something In The Night (Red Bank, NJ 76) 4. Don’t Look Back (NYC 78) 5. Ain't Good Enough For You (NYC 78) 6. The Promise (NYC 78) 7. Candy's Room Demo (NYC 78) 8. Badlands (Phoenix 78) 9. The Promised Land (Phoenix 78) 10. Prove It All Night (Phoenix 78) 11. Born To Run (Phoenix 78) 12. Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) (Phoenix 78) Plus 2 CDs of songs not released. For once a "deluxe" set that more than lives up the name. Press release w/ all the details here.
  13. He doesn't have the b.s. win counting stat since he plays for the horrible M's, but Felix has almost 60 more innings pitched than Buchholz yet just 2 more walks, never mind the massive K to BB ratio and he didn't miss a month. Another nice job tonight. For some reason you can miss a month and be a hitter and get consideration for MVP (especially in extreme cases like Brett in '80) and get a MVP, but I think missing a month costs too much as a starter to get Cy. But what a shame, another fine year of pitching by Felix for an especially horrid team. I still don't understand how Carlton won 27 for those '72 Phils.
  14. KRod was signed pre-Madoff. When that many millions has presumably evaporated, when given the opportunity...I can't blame them. Toss in the asshole quotient & losers don't need closets - might as well try!
  15. The home run is so big it has 2 great nicknames, the other being the "Miracle of Coogan's Bluff."
  16. Or to rephrase, Jeter should bat much lower vs. righties, whereas Gardner can bat leadoff effectively vs. either right or left (though more so vs. RHP). Jeter still spanks LHP, but unfortunately that's the rarer arm. Should the Yanks fail in the playoffs at least it's looking like promoting Gardner and letting fading Johnny Damon go shouldn't get the blame. I'm hoping that with the Yankees of basketball their sentimentality with the overrated Derek Fisher will be their undoing. Oops, thread stray, and sorry Noj.
  17. The way to get this released is if everyone starts writing the museum, asking if they have comfy coaches that allow for hours & hours of listening. Also bugging them about their interconnects and the like. If they realize they could end up having a bunch of jazz fanatics hanging around scaring away more normal patrons, they'll get the legal stuff figured out. Such a great find!
  18. I dunno, it's not like I sought out or play the lullabies my mom sang to me. Probably best I took the path I did, even if it meant doing without the Duke for a few decades.
  19. These things happen, and humans do right now & then. Want to hear dedication? When I was volunteering at a wildlife rehabilitation center a smaller creature also got it's head stuck in a jar. It was a skunk. Wasn't my shift that day (whew!), but the skunk was safely extracted and did not spray the rehabber.
  20. And used for the August 15th Sunday Foxtrot comic.
  21. Just 8 days away from seeing them in St. Louis. Haven't been so excited about a rock show in a long time. Thanks for the Insurgentes news as Burning Shed has yet to alert me (though I know they will eventually. I mean I did pre-order the King Crimson 40th Anniversary releases so they know I still love them.) I have Steve's last solo album and have been looking to dip into some of his other bands. The DVD looks like a good way to do so and get some visuals too.
  22. A movie that is full of time inconsistencies is Quadrophenia. It's my favorite Who album and I knew the band's history so I was detail minded when I saw the movie. It's a bit of mess trying to figure out the year it takes place. Within the movie there are TV appearances by the band that Jimmy watches that suggest 1964, later A Quick One is in a record collection so it has to be later (Dec. '66). Then there's the matter of 1970s cars driving around. I knew my British cars from having visited a car nut cousin in the British Isles a few times, so they couldn't get that past me! At least Bellboy Sting didn't start singing Police songs. I swear I've seen a jet trail in a western along with a big power lines on cattle drives (though I suppose the latter could be a stand in for telegraph if they're simple wooden poles) as I used to look for them, but it was so long ago I can't recall specifics. Oh yes, more for geeks than a big alarms-going-off problem, but in Field Of Dreams Shoeless Joe bats right rather than left like he did in real life. Personally I was horrified.

I noticed that. But I did wonder if Densmore was drum-synching. I think the Smothers Bros. Show is a case where the vocals are live, the rest recorded pre-show. That method was used for one or two other shows from that era (I recall a Stones appearance in the late '60s somewhere else where Mick's vocals are live, the rest not.)
  24. Skip the movie and enjoy the trailer instead.

I'm not sure if the singing is live or not. With The Who's "My Generation" from the Kids Are Alright Smothers Brothers appearance the music was pre-recorded but the vocal was live. I thought that might be happening here, but I'm not positive. (Duh, guess someone should Google & see, but not lazy me.) Even lip-synched the whole way, I'll still tip my hat to at least the director. Not too long ago I saw the famous Syd Barrett can't lip-sync so we'll pretend Roger Waters is singing video again, so anything looks good after that.
