  1. Atonal Chromaticism Can anybody take a crack at translating this description into English? I play guitar, but totally by ear...never learned theory or how to read standard notation. And honestly, I'm not versed in a lot of terms (I still have problems undersanding modes, etc). But anyway...I ran across this phrase in an album review, I have a notion of what it means, but would like to hear it described by my esteemed board members. Thanks!
  2. I have no problems linking images...it's the file upload that I can never get to work. Sometimes I get an error message (You cannot upload this type of file), other times I get no error message at all...but image still doesn't display. I tried using both Jpeg & Gif versions even...same thing. I'll check the specific file type when I get home this evening.
  3. I've never been able to attach images either...they never show up...and they are under 100k.

    RAY DVD

Thanks for the review Jim, I haven't had a chance to see this film yet...so I'm especially looking forward to it now.
  5. Don't like that ad one bit. I'm getting a little tired of the fad of exhuming dead actors to appear in commercials & films....whether it's this, or Steve McQueen test driving the new Mustang....or Laurence Olivier "playing" the villian in Sky Captain....bad taste... Anway... You MUST watch Singin' In The Rain....that is the first film that I ever remember seeing and I've loved it my entire life. It manages to create an overall mood that many musicals strive for but never quite succeed at. And it doesn't take itself too seriously...by playing as a satire it makes it all the more endearing. "Moses supposes his toes-es are roses, but Moses supposes erroneously. Moses he knows-es his toes-es aren't roses. as Moses supposes his toes-es to be."
  6. I you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend this recent black comedy gem.... Ossie plays JFK!!!!! Well, at least an old guy in an East Texas nursing home who THINKS he's JFK. When he tells Elvis (Bruce Campbell) who he is, Elvis replays "But, you're black"....Ossie then responds with "They dyed me".
  7. I have a couple requests!!!!!!!!! Hank Mobley - Another Workout - KILLER record....horrendous cover...can someone do this excellent session justice? Kenny Burrell - Freedom - Would like to see a couple different ideas for this one. Thanks guys...I'm not much of a photoshop guy...but I'll try to come up with something to share.
  8. Some recent "semi-prog" rock that's worth checking out. Ty Tabor (King's X) - Guitars, Vocals, Producer, Mix & Mastering John Myung (Dream Theater) - Bass Derek Sherinian (ex-Dream Theater) - Keyboards Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs) - Drums, Percussion As the title suggests, this is not an "overly-serious" album, a nudge nudge wink wink mood prevails on many selections. This is really a stylistic homage to a variety of 70's era prog groups, some overt, some subtle. The album is split about evenly between instrumentals & vocal tracks. Of the songs with vocals, "Nothing To Say" is easily the best piece of songwriting. Very similar in style to Tabor's solo work, with a nice extended instrumental section in the middle. "I'm With You", with it's opening riff homage to Carry On My Wayward Son, is a very Kansas influenced heavy rocker. "Willie Brown" starts as a bluesy rocker before going wonderfully over the top, almost like Ten Years After on crack. The real meat is in the instrumentals though. Of course it's all still in the tribute mode, so it's easy to pick out the influences. "Platt Opus" & "Rock Balls/Destination Unknown" are the epic tracks, going through multiple changes in time, feel, etc. Of course there are lots of great solos, especially by Tabor who really cuts loose, playing very differently than he does with King's X (which emphasizes songs over solos). Chimes is an almost new age track, a morgenstein feature. My favorite track is the album closer "What About The Merch?". It sounds like a missing track from Blow By Blow, this group REALLY nails the Beck vibe on this one, Tabor is phenomenal. *note* If you listen to samples off the internet, ignore the first track, it's unfortunately a throwaway and the weakest song on the album* There is another Platypus album and 2 more by the splinter group The Jelly Jam which I will discuss later......
  9. Railroad spikes. I'm not kidding....started when I was 4.
  10. MetalBlade ...just kidding....
  11. ....don't bogart that joint...my friend....
  12. Well, I think it's going to be a great game...the "real" superbowl since I don't believe either the Eagles or Falcons can beat the eventual winner of this one. I'm going to have to take Pittsburgh. I think it's their time, they've had a great season and I don't believe Big Ben will repeat the same mistakes as last week. I agreee that Corey Dillon could be a deciding factor in this game...although he's up against a team that doesn't exactly give up much running yardage. Then there is the two pronged running attack of Bettis & Staley...if Pittsburgh is able to play the same strategy that the Pats did against' the Colts last week (hold on to the ball and run out the clock)...they'll come out on top.
  13. True. But that was originally a 3-track 12-inch single...there is an extra track on the CD. Actually, same band. Slayer's classic Reign In Blood clocks in at 28 minutes or so...but it's probably the most perfect 28 minutes in Heavy Metal.
  14. Wow! What a great album, glad to see it's finally available in CD form. All Kenny Burrell fans should own this one...hell, even if your NOT a Kenny Burrell fan you need to own this one. Easily in my top 5 favorites of his, and one of the most consistently pleasurable Verve dates from this era. Don't let the big band stuff scare you off, this stuff is tasteful as it gets and swings like MAD! Also, gotta give a thumbs up to Asphalt Canyon Suite. Really like that album as well, not as good as Night Song, but it's still worth getting...even at the import price. These records should have been released in the states...LONG AGO!
  15. Rusty Bryant - Fire Eater That one jumps to mind right away, will have to think of more once I've had coffee...
  16. Sorry...I don't buy that. My Grandfather was born in 1903 in southern Virginia. He was racist because that's what he learned growing up. One time a member of our family married a black man and he was furious. I was about 8 at the time and I asked him why shouldn't they have gotten married. He said "If blacks & whites were supposed to marry they would be the same color". A stupid statement to be sure. But you know what? He was a GREAT person. Loving parent, high school english teacher, Lion's club president, member of the volunteer fire department and about any other social group in town. I remember riding with him to people's houses in the winter to deliver food to people who couldn't afford it...taking a load of firewood to one of our elderly neighbors who was too sickly to cut their own...and countless other things like that. A person's beliefs are not always the sum total of their worth in this world. I have never agreed with his thoughts regarding race...but I loved the man more than anything...and I'm PROUD to have known him.
  17. You know, I've been sitting here reading through this thread, trying to figure out how a simple "rest in peace" post....could turn into this meandering mess...with Hitler references no less... Ya know, all you guys that are so "offended" by Reggie White...do you happen to have any Miles Davis recordings in your collections? If we were to judge Miles by his personal beliefs and the way he led his life...I don't think we'd be all that fond of him. The reason we dig Miles is because of the music he made and honestly, I don't give a flying shit WHAT his beliefs were or what kind of person he was. I just dig his music and don't have time in my life to sit around pondering what he was thinking or what his motivations were...and it doesn't fucking matter anyway.
  18. The Bass Player did it.....
  19. I just thought it was a funny quote. I'm the most "anti-organized religion" guy you're ever likely to meet. I don't believe in sin...it's a crock o' shit.
  20. Well, I'm not going to focus on those things he said, it was unfortunate but that's not what he should be remembered for. He was one of the best football players to ever hit the field. He was a loving/caring person and a tribute to how professional athletes should behave. We need more Reggie Whites in the era of loud mouthed jerks like Terrell Owens. When asked why he went to Green Bay he responded. "I came to sack sin & quarterbacks".
  21. Well...I do...and the Seahawks won the game...they have grabbed a playoff berth...and if the Rams lose tonight they will win their division. Do they have a chance in hell of getting past round 1? Probably not...but at least they got there...
  22. Sonny Rollins & Wayne Shorter. Took me a while to warm up to these guys. I never dis-liked them, but in the early days of my listening, both of them came off as being rather cold. It took ALOT of listening, but finally, inch by inch, I began to "get" what they were doing and now I find it hard to believe that I ever had difficulty with them. I also have to give a big THANKS to Jim Sangrey for helping my understanding along...through our conversations I was able to find the fresh ears that I needed to start grasping what I was hearing. I could sit around and listen to Jim talk about Sonny Rollins all night....and I have on numerous occasions!
  23. I think the game was a good "reality-check" for the Patriots. After all, the Chargers, Colts & Steelers are no slouches right now....they better tighten it up... Miami's offense looked pretty shaky...but the defense was ON.
  24. Even after all these years, still one of the most interesting and satisfying rock bands around. A "no frills" live 2 CD set, all soundboard recordings from various tours, no overdubs, mistakes left in place..and it's all the better for it. Probably the most successful "supergroup" band of recent years. No egos, no self indulgent noodling, just real good songs with nice hooks & melodies, played to perfection by top notch musicians. With just a sprinkling of "prog rock" on the top. Ty Tabor - Guitars, Vocals (King's X), John Myung - Bass (Dream Theater), Rod Morgenstern - Drums (Dixie Dregs) After taking a 10 year break to shed the scales off the "corporate rock monster" they had evolved into...Heart returns to their roots and hits one out of the park. The Wilson sisters prove they still have the magic that went into their early albums. By drinking heavily from the Zeppelin fountain again, they rediscovered their passion. Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) spent 4 years putting this beast together. A loving hhomage to the underground Metal scene of the 80's. He plays most of the instruments and put together an "all star" collection of vocalists to bring this nasty little gem to life. Vocalists: Cronos (Venom), Max Cavalera (Sepultura, Soulfly), Lemmy (Motorhead), Mike Dean (C.O.C.), Kurt Brecht (D.R.I.), Lee Dorian (Napalm Death), Wino (The Obsessed), Tom G. Warrior (Celtic Frost), Snake (Voi Vod), Eric Wagner (Trouble) & King Diamond (Mercyful Fate). The opening track Centuries Of Sin with Cronos could be the best metal song recorded in the last 15 years..... A wonderfully wacky side project courtesy of Josh Homme (Queens Of The Stone Age). So goofily garage band rock that you smile through the whole thing. Includes the wonderfully groovy cover version: Stuck In The "Metal" With You.
  25. King Diamond
