  1. Thanks for posting this Andrew. Sad news indeed. I'll have to pull out Kenny Drew's This Is New and give it a spin this evening....
  2. Hmmm, this thread has me thinking. I've loved the Blind Faith record for years, one of my faves...but I've never owned any Traffic albums. Might be a good time to rethink that and try some out.
  3. I think we should practice the "seperation between church & jazz discussion" whenever possible....
  4. hmmmm...the tangent this topic is going on is making me a tad nervous...
  5. I think the idea was to talk about the music......
  6. All of the CD versions of Wahoo that I've heard (US & TOCJ) have tape deliniation noise during Joe Henderson's solo on Amanda. The LP was mastered prior to the tape being damaged so it's not on there.
  7. Well...it is to me. But then again, I'm a little "off" as they say.
  8. Thanks guys! Maybe since I just turned 34 I should declare this an official "Waltz Time" birthday?
  9. I GUESS IT'S PRETTY COOL, HUH? BUMBERSHOOT IS A LITTLE FAR TO DRIVE FROM THE EAST COAST THOUGH....
  10. I originally couldn't stand his singing, but I've warmed to it...very hip in it's own way. I always really liked the "Chet Baker & Crew" album....good schtuff.
  11. WOW!!!! Man, those are some incredible pictures! I had never heard of him....thanks for the thread...
  12. Happy Birthday!!!
  13. I guess it depends on the amount of the fortune required.... Sometimes those prices make me
  14. Ain't THAT the truth!!!! I spent about 4 months cleaning up a mono pressing of Duke Pearson's Wahoo....but it was worth the effort in the long run. No more damaged tape noise in Joe Henderson's Amanda solo! Yeah!
  15. I've been using Soundforge for years and in my opinion, it's one of the best audio products on the market. But. I agree with the others that I don't recommend using automated noise reduction...because of all the information that gets removed along with the noise. Doing it manually is the best method for pops and scratches. Soundforge recently increased their zoom ratio so it's now even a more precise operation when "drawing out" sounds. That is the method I use instead of muting, use the pencil tool to "re-draw" the scratch to approximate the original wave form. It's not an exact science, but with a little practice it returns results that are even more invisible than muting the sound. For some music, running noise reduction might not be as noticeable...but with the ambience of jazz it's a killer. (just listen to any reissues that use CEDAR).
  16. I know, I know...another birthday thread...so SUE ME! Just wanted to say Happy Birthday to one of my best friends in the world. Hope you have a great one!
  17. I suggest changing his description to "Vote For Kerry!"
  18. I think the word "vehicle" was invented for Neil Diamond..... I HEFF NO SON!!!!!
  19. All The Things You Are = Anatomy (Mal Waldron)
  20. Ah, Leeway...you got to Chuck Berry first! Damn, I was going to post that! Anyway, let me say that if Chuck ain't considered a "great" songwriter...I'll eat my guitar! Well...maybe not...but damn he wrote some unforgettable tunes. I'll also throw in Curtis Mayfield.... As far as Jim's post regarding "is it a great SONG?"....I haven't a clue, I don't have the music education background to be considered a real "critic". I think he's 100% correct that it's a totally subjective discussion. Here's the way I look at it...the only opinion that really matters is your own...if you get moved by the Sex Pistols singing "No Feelings"...SO BE IT!!! Then, it's a great fucking song...to the only critic that matters. It's fun to see people's choices in these types of discussions...gives you a little insight into their head, sometimes share a common experience that a certain song or performer has inspired in you. But in the end, that magical song could have been "Wango Tango" by Ted Nugent! And we all know what a GENIUS he was!! But...if someone forced me at gunpoint to tell them what I thought made a great song...GREAT...it would probably come out something like..."It's memorable, sounds timeless and inspired others". Not exactly a scientific approach (because the same criteria could be used to describe commercial jingles) but I'm stickin' to it.
  21. I'll second that James Taylor nod..... and I'll also give a big thumbs up to Nick Drake!
  22. Goldwave is a good, cheap alternative...although I've never been a fan of their DSP functions. But for what you described it should do the job. For the "real deal" (and the price tag to match)...you just can't beat Sonic Foundry's SoundForge program...I've been using it religiously for years and I couldn't live without it.
  23. Yesterday was so humid that you basically were drenched as soon as you set foot outside the door. ick! Today isn't much better, overcast but just as muggy.
  24. AMEN! You beat me to it..... While I won't profess to say who the "greatest" songwriters are (and I classify songwriter as music w/lyrics...vs...composer), I can mention people whose songs have meant alot to me personally. A few so far not mentioned: Neil Young Stephen Stills Jimi Hendrix Donald Fagen/Walter Becker Bill Withers Robert Plant/Jimmy Page
