  1. Now there's an Ellington release: https://www.offbeat.com/news/incredibly-clear-duke-ellington-recording-surfaces-online/ And can someone combine this thread with the one Berigan started about metal masters?
  2. Now there's an Ellington: https://www.offbeat.com/news/incredibly-clear-duke-ellington-recording-surfaces-online/ And how do we combine this thread with the one under "audio".
  3. Definitely preordered this one, though this will be at least the third time for me for the Basie Deccas on cd. I think this is the first time Mosaic has managed to combine Universal-owned and Sony-owned recordings in one set, isn't it? So, if I have the other Mosaic set, the Complete Savoy set and the Complete Verve set, will this pretty well complete Prez's studio recordings? I'm not counting the live things. gregmo Hey, that was at least a week ago. Who can remember?
  4. I forgot about Arcadia. Yes It is a wonderful play.
  5. I saw this in New York, then read the play. They left out one line near the end: the one where someone talks abut cutting off the heads of the colonialists. I loved this play but I feel that way about pretty well all Stoppard. (I think Travesties is my favorite.)
  6. No, and why don't they? Obviously I'm not the only one who wasn't sure. If it weren't for this discussion I'd still be wondering
  7. Savoy material and of course the studio sessions with Lady Day.
  8. http://www.offbeat.com/news/crystal-clear-louis-armstrong-recording-surfaces/ Any comments?
  9. I doubt if it is, but nothing says it's not. Just in case I ordered it because I can't wait.
  10. I was there. See above. Though I suppose they may have done it more than once.
  11. Probably because he didn't want to share royalties with Miles.
  12. I saw that Mingus band twice in Toronto: Once doing a benefit for Ed Blackwell and once at a rock club: The El Mocambo. Both times Adams did the spinning around bit while he soloed. I thought it was corny and terrific at the same time. At the El Mo they actually played Happy Birthday for someone. According to Bill Smith, Mingus chased him around the club yelling that Bill was trying to steal his piano player because Bill and John Norris were recording Pullen for Sackville-- a a recording session I was lucky enough to attend.
  13. It wasn't that poorly distributed. I had no trouble finding it in Toronto. This thread includes a discussion of the Verve album with the "sketches".
  14. Yes I have to check myself when I'm about to say "post-war" since younger people now ask me "which war?". Of course that's now also true when I say "turn of the century". I'v taught myself to say "turn of the 20th Century". And what used to be called "modern" in terms of art and architecture is now called "mid-century".

  16. I think I agree. Seems to me that the great divide in the culture was pre and post Vietnam. I'm old enough to remember lifer pre and young enough to have enjoyed the fruits of the change. My kids live in a slightly different culture than mine but I lived in a radically different culture than my parents.
  17. Do you mind if I forward this to Tom McDermott? (Or have you already told him how much you liked his playing?)
  18. I ordered the Blake/Lee from Amazon and what arrived was on the"Solar" label from 2012. It had 6 bonus tracks from a 1963 broadcast of a concert in Germany. Good notes, including the original RCA, the original Downbeat review, the AMG entry and the entry from the NY Times "Essential Jazz Library" (what's that?).
  19. They were once available even if in limited editions: those cds you know about but have never been able to find and you really want them. What's on your list? Top of mine is The Complete Gil Evans and the Monday Night Orchestra at Sweet Basil's.
  20. Is "disc" the title or the label? And is this on cd?
  21. Couple of years ago saw the Bob Cowsill band when it was on a bill with my wife's band. They were pretty good.
  22. Well he gets a credit in the opening titles but I believe that none of his music was used.
