  1. I really didn't know his work that well but we cast him as the villain in Beethoven because he auditioned and was great. One day during the shoot HE thanked me for making a film with no swearing. I said he was welcome but to be honest to surprised to realize the film had no cursing. He was a terrific villain.
  2. I Had the Craziest Dream by Harry James and His Orchestra.
  3. Many people seem not to understand that it is unnecessary to have an opinion about absolutely everything. And if you do have an opinion, it is unnecessary to voice it. And if you must voice it, be prepared to discover that nobody gives a fuck what you think. As Miles said on hearing Wynton diss electric jazz: "Did someone ask him a question?!! I didn't hear no question". (That's not verbatim-- I just remember reading it many years ago. )
  4. George Avakian. Need I say more.

    Desmond/Konitz

I always thought of him as urbane rather than intellectual. He sure as hell was more urbane than I was.

    Desmond/Konitz

I've always liked his solos on "Balcony Rock", where he shows he could play the blues (though I can't think of any other examples) and Le Souk, where he goes East a few years before Miles and Coltrane did. Both on Jazz Goes to College.
  7. I've already downloaded 2 of his Newport appearances including one where he came on between Blood, Sweat and Tears and Jeff Beck! He berated the audience as dope smoking "hipsters" and still got a standing ovation and an encore.
  8. Wolfgang's Vault has changed their member ship fees and as a result I've got a credit of about $60. Their downloads now cost $5 so I'll be using the credit for 12 downloads. Except for a 1980 Clash concert I presume I'll choose all jazz of which they have a lot. Anyone here familiar with what they've got and have any recommendations? I know some of the concerts (especially Newport) have been available on cd and some can be streamed and not downloaded. They have many Newport sets so even if you aren't familiar with the vault are there an memorable Newport concerts you'd recommend? (I've already asked and they don't seem to have the 1958 concert with Pee Wee Russell and Lester Young.) BTW Under their old system you got one free download of their choosing twice a week. I got some Al and Zoot that way and also some good Bill Evans. Other things I've bought include Gil Evans, Duke Ellington and George Russell.\
  9. I'l probably see it. I love Ice Cube.
  10. I suspect that this is a thread I should archive and will need to consult in a couple of years.
  11. BTW They also played Don't Worry at Newport in '55 and it's available for a listen or download at Wolfgang's Vault. http://www.concertvault.com/dave-brubeck-quartet/newport-jazz-festival-july-17-1955.html
  12. Happy B'day! (And many more.)
  13. But is the 2nd side really Harry James? (Now if someone would only post a download.)
  14. Anyone else read this? I thought it was great.
  15. The internet has completely changed the means of distribution and the number of middle people between the artist and his/her audience has been reduced to zero.
  16. Oh to be 60 again! Happy B'day!
  17. Having not heard this, but based on your clues is it Johnny Coles? OK I've listened to it and I still think it's Little Johnny C but from a record I don't have.
  18. I just wish there were some recordings of the gigs with JJ Johnson or Buddy Montgomery-- no matter what the sound quality.
  19. By coincidence I was cleaning out my office and found a photo of Van singed to me that the director of The Savoy King gave me for helping him out. To be honest I didn't know much about Van till I saw a rough cut of the film.
  20. There are really good interviews with him in the documentary about Chick Webb : http://savoyking.com/.
  21. I think I've mentioned this before, but the new Miles Bootleg 4 got me thinking about it again. It's usually easy to find out when records were recorded but often more difficult to find out when they were released. This is particularly true of Miles's Prestige releases. So when the audience at the '55 Newport festival were surprised by Miles' playing, it may have been because they hadn't yet heard "Musings of Miles" or the session with Monk from December 24, '54. Similarly the '69 audience was probably surprised by the selections from Bitch's Brew when In a Silent Way had not yet been released. The release dates of the Columbia records are listed in the box sets but the Prestige recordings seem to have been released rather haphazardly often years after they were recorded. I've been able to find Downbeat reviews of some of them and presume that they're from around the release dates. Can anyone suggest a better source? And which is the correct possessive "Miles'" or "Miles's"?
  22. Yeah, I wish 66/67 was in stereo. (Am I the only one who prefers stereo as much as I do?) Also the notes ignore that 'Round Midnight from '55 was previously available ion a 2 cd release of the 'Round About Midnight Lp.
  23. According to the discography in Lewis Porter's bio there are at least 7 numbers done by Pres's group as well as a couple he did with Nat Cole. Although I've managed to find over 100 of the Jubilee shows I don't have those ones. Anyone know where they're available? (Many of the shows with Basie can be found on-line.)
  24. I once heard a dj play "Things.." and announce that it was by Johnny Mercer and Duke Ellington. I guess he looked at the label. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
  25. Worth seeing. Early Louis Malle and very representative of the time. Lot's of music.
