    Paul Bley

Hey maybe Bley did more recordings with Bird than we know about. (Though I doubt it.)
  2. My favorite has always been the book titled "Who Do You Think You Are?" (a quintessentially Canadian title) but retitled "The Beggar Maid" in the US.
  3. How'd you find this and is more of this concert out there?
  4. According to Stephanie Crease's bio he "wrote to the Carpenters in April 1949...'we're on our way to California'". She later says that "Between 1950 and 1951 Gil worked at a strip club in Greenwich Village..." So it's not impossible (though unlikely).
  5. Thanks Chuck. Looking at the photo on Jim's post it seem that the US cd has an edited version of the Lp cut. In fact it looks like the French version is the US Lp version plus the 3 cuts on the US cd that were previously unreleased, but with the US cd version (a longer one) of The Meaning of the Blues. (I just noticed that the US cd says that the omission of Aftermath, the editing of Comes A Time and the lengthening of Meaning of the Blues as well as the remix of the whole Lp were all done under Gil's supervision. Was the cd released at the time RCA was doing some double Lp/single cd releases where the cd dropped a couple of cuts?
  6. Was there a single? And Little Wing was on the original Lp too. (I was so out of touch that I heard Gil's version of Little Wing before I heard Hendrix's. Great tune.)
  7. The US cd has only 8 cuts. Little Wing is on the US cd of "Plays Jimi Hendrix" but "Aftermath of the 4th Movement...." was issued in the US on a single cd that contained works by both Gil and Mingus! And if Chuck's Discogs listing is correct the French version of "Comes a Time" is nearly 2 minutes longer than the US version! (Is that from the original Lp?) Chuck would you mind checking if it is correct? If it is, I'll have to get it because I'm an insane Gil Evans completist. (Yes I have the Johnny Mathis record with a few of his arrangements.)
  8. While perusing Discogs I came across this: : https://www.discogs.com/release/7920632-Gil-Evans-Favorite-Catalina-Melodies Anyone know anything about? Is it even "the" Gil Evans? No mention of it in any of the 3 books I have about Gil.
  9. Just looked it up. It's the Royal Festival Hall. (I had it wrong on the cd I made from the 2 Lps that were issued. )
  10. IIRC He's also with Gil in the Royal Albert Hall concerts (Or is it the Queen Elizabeth Hall?).

    RIP, John Pisano

Nice obit in LA TIMES: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/music/story/2024-05-10/john-pisano-dean-of-l-a-jazz-guitar-dies-at-93#:~:text=John was a consummate gentleman,John was a master craftsman.”
  12. Me too. The list of his recordings (not necessarily releases) in the"New Desor"-- Duke Ellington's Story on Records-- suggests that most of the concerts he gave in the last decade of his life was recorded by someone.
  13. Was'n't sure but this convinced me.

Then you're right: he probably did make a nice piece of change from the record. IIRC Russ Freeman made enough money to retire after Mariah Carey recorded her version of The Wind. (The retirement part isn't mentioned but here's a good story about it: https://jazzresearch.com/russ-freeman-the-wind/.)

    RIP, John Pisano

Did he write something on it? Otherwise I don 't think he gets anything except his session fees.
  16. Thanks for the report. Wish I'd been there.
  17. I was a big fan. Couple of New Orleans friends of mine worked on it.
  18. Koerner Hall? That will be great. I saw Laurie Anderson there a few weeks ago.
  19. Just came back from a Kronos Quartet concert at which they played "Kiss Yo' Ass Goodbye" credited to Sun Ra, Terry Riley and Sara Miyamoto. According to the program notes it "utilizes Sun Ra's Track 'Nuclear War' as source material." It begins to really kick ass when they sample the drumming and chanting from the original.
  20. It's up at both Band Camp and Amazon.
  21. Do you know what it is?
  22. My mistake. I should have said (according to my discography) it's Taxi War DAnce that's really Willow Weep for Me. But I better wait till I hear it to confirm.
  23. Despite the title she gave the article she never gives any total sales figures. There have been several articles pointing out that the DOJ never said that 50% of books published sell less than 12 copies a year. They asked a hypothetical question.
  24. Thanks. Just ordered it. (I also don't have these versions of Taxi War Dance and Tickle-Toe (which apparently is really Willow Weep for Me).
  25. I think I have all the stuff with Basie. It's the Young brothers band material I'm looking for.
