  1. I saw that group in '64. Remember being really impressed by Workman.
  2. And there was always the Schwan's Record Catalogue but I've heard almost no person or institution has a complete run.
  3. I read it a long time ago. IIRC (and I often don't) it connects KOB to many other movements in the arts. I liked it. BTW I really liked the first chapter of the new book which was quoted above. Even though I've claimed I'm not going to buy any more books about either Miles or Dylan (I am still buying nearly everything about Ellington) I'll probably get this book. KOB has a special place in my heart. I got it from the Columbia Record Club when it was first issued and I thought that if this was jazz, I loved jazz.
  4. Yes and sometimes for a musician's complete output. There's a Miles Davis discography on Wikipedia from which you can see that in 1957 Miles had five great albums released: Walkin', Cookin', Bag's Groove, Miles Ahead and the first Lp actually titled Birth of the Cool. What kind of impact must that have had?
  5. There's also this: Blue Moment: Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and the Remaking of Modern Music
  6. I'd like to be able to find release dates of records. That gives an understanding of when a recording might have had its earliest influence.
  7. I can't get the "Show more credits" to work. In case anyone else is as clueless as me: It's Fathead, Art Blakey, and Dr. John. All three get writing credits for the song, which is a bit simple for my taste but I love Mac's piano solo. He does sing on some cuts and on one Blakey plays piano!
  8. Well, different drummer makes all the difference.
  9. There was a sequel!!
  10. I'm only seeing 10 cuts on either site. To quote Randy Newman "Maybe I'm doing it wrong." (I am computer illiterate.)
  11. IIRC she was married to a great disc jockey who was responsible for taping Garner's Concert by the Sea. I heard him once broadcasting the origins of much of Sketches of Spain. Forget his name right now.
  12. It's not the LA Times. It's a guy who who usually writes about Latino life saying what it means to him. I think it's interesting to hear from a non-musician non-white.
  13. A non-music critic response: https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-02-14/rhapsody-in-blue-100th-anniversary If you scroll down to the bottom of the column there's a good description of the writer's qualifications.
  14. https://lewisporter.substack.com/?r=uab0r&utm_campaign=pub&utm_medium=web Articles like this make me happy to pay for his Substack.
  15. Wow. Is there a cd?
  16. Did you get enough to repay Dan (at least in part)? He shouldn't have to shoulder the load.
  17. Wow: I didn't know you got TCM with Max. Even more reason to cut my cable.
  18. I donated in December but my profile says I'm not a donor. Is it by calendar year? Anyway I just sent you another paypal donation.
  19. Me too. Hopefully the Vanguards will be in the rumored Mosaic Vanguard set.
  20. Bill Smith, editor of Coda, played Alto sax.
  21. Well if that's the one who became the film composer Benny Carter liked him.
  22. You need a BluRay player to play it in stereo. I don't think it's that much of a sonic upgrade but my ears are shot.
