What do you have no opinion about?
medjuck replied to BeBop's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
As I've gotten older I've discovered that there are many things about which it is unnecessary for me to have an opinion and even when I have one it is rarely necessary for me to voice it. -

The Gil Evans Centennial Project: Newly-discovered Works of Gil Evans

I did. -
Not sure I'm familiar with that, but I'm sure I probably should be. (I *love* "The Barbara Song". ) What Gil album(s) is it on? It first appeared on Live at the Public Theater, Vol. 2. The piece showed up on the 1983 Mole Jazz LP The British Orchestra, retitled "London." I'm not sure if that last one ever appeared on CD. I've got a cd of it on a label called "TAA".

Gil Evans's Copenhagen Sights is based on Wayne Shorter's solo on The Barbara Song on The Individualism of Gil Evans. And I think there's a Coleman Hawkins song based on a solo he did with Count Basie. (I'll try to check this later.)

What live music are you going to see tonight?
medjuck replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Wish I could have been there. I haven't seen Ely or Allen in quite some time. Nice to see Terry Allen is still playing form time to time. I wish he'd come back to my neighborhood. Last Friday I went to see Bill Frisell w/Beautiful Dreamers Trio and John Scofield Trio. It made for interesting/contrasting comparisons for the night. Frisell was wonderfull as usual. He never fails to surprise me. Scofield played The Lawns by Carla Bley which was the highlight of his set for me. Sco had the fantastic Bill Stewart playing drums which kept me on my toes. It's a thrill to watch and hear him play. I saw that double bill on Saturday. When I saw them Scofield played the first set and then was joined by the Dreamers for one song: "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"-- that was the highlight for me. -
Borders Enters Chapter 11, Plans To Close 30% Of Stores
medjuck replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
In the late '90s I spent a couple of months on Kauai. There was a large Borders that was the center of culture for the island. People held meetings there. I would go there, order an iced coffee and then spend hours looking through books and cds. -
Yes, both Miles and Jack cook on the first 3 tunes! As to reacting differently based on medium, I'm not sure. Just glad to have it anyway I can get it. Which causes a more positive reaction in you? Usually the video.

Just got this and it's really worthwhile even though I already have the DVD of Isle of Wight. Without Wayne to pick up any slack, Miles really blisters on the first three tracks. As to the last 6 cuts: am I the only one who finds they react differently to a performance when they can see it?

This sounds way too much like "smooth Jazz" to me-- the only musical genre that gives me the shingles. (This may just be a blind spot on my part. I suspect that many aficionados of that genre are at least as intelligent and have at least as good taste as I do. Some of them may even like Alan Lowe as well as liking smooth jazz.)

This is a lovely recording. Beautifully packaged too. I can't believe that there's only 100 copies in the world.

Interesting article even if I'm disappointed that it's not by the Stone's former bass player. It doesn't answer all the questions I have. Who belongs to the Academy, how many members are there and how do you become one? Do they all vote on nominations for everything? And do the all vote on final winners for everything? And am I right in thinking that none of the jazz categories are considered important enough to have a special committee manipulating the results?

I'm in Canada where there are a lot more Lonehills available and I see one that has pee wee plays along with Portrait of PW. I already own the latter. Given that I love Pee Wee and they claim it's the first cd Release of. "plays" is this worth getting at a fairly high price ? Btw who owns the rights to the Dot label nowadays ?

The only Frissell record I've heard that I don't like is the one of Elvis Costello/Burt Bacharach songs. (Though I do like lots of Elvis and most of Burt's other work.)

Where was the article? I think they want to buy EMI but may not be able to afford it.BTW I don't understand how the Citigroup takeover helped retire debt but it has and EMI is now viable on its own for a couple of years.

Miles electric period
medjuck replied to skeith's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
If you're referring to the commentary in the box sets, I agree. Also he had information not available to Tingen. -
Wow I'd forgotten that Barry did the music for The Knack. It was made by Richard Lester between his two Beatles films and has been pretty much forgotten. It's very much of its time and was considered hot stuff in 1965. I'd be curious to see it again. Always did like pre-Phantom Michael Crawford.

Just came back from seeing/hearing something called "Blues at the Crosswords" which is sort of a commemoration of Robert Johnson's centennial. Centers on a group called Big Head Todd and the Monsters who I'd never heard of but they're pretty good. I went because they featured as guests Hubert Sumlin and Honey Boy Edwards! I think at 95 Edwards is the oldest performer I've ever heard but he still rocks as does Hubert-- the reason I went to the show and I'm glad I did. -
All these videos are terrific. Wouldn't it be great if Jazz Icons or Sony did a DVD of them. Unfortunately that probably won't happen because the Davis estate seems so difficult to deal with. I love YouTube!

Do you have more information about the series? Who else is included, when were they done and by whom? Thanks.
-
What? he's on all three sextet tracks. (Cannonball is not on Stella.)
-
He did one called "Muted Jazz" iirc and then a deluge of popular Lps with girls on the cover. I had a few of them as a kid before I was into jazz. When I started to learn about jazz I was surprised about his history. Similarly when I was a kid Cozy Cole had a recording of Topsy on the hit parade. I think the hit side was Topsy Pt 2 with a long, but danceable drum solo.

IIRC there was a story/interview with Miles in Rolling Stone during this period that was really depressing. He was very fucked up.
