  1. Friend of mine who collects jazz films had a visit from Watts who requested to see footage of Big Sid Catlett. First saw The Stones in 1966. I think I was the oldest person in the audience.
  2. A famous stand for them.
  3. I loved The Clash but only saw them live once on a double bill with the English Beat. I remember thinking they must have thought it was counter revolutionary to get the audience off, while The English Beat represented everything the Clash talked about just by their presence. OTOH I've heard people who saw the same show say that the Clash changed their life that night. (IIRC It was at the Palladium in LA.)
  4. I didn't know that. On the presumption it's on Spotify I'll have to give it a listen.
  5. You probably know this but Marshall Mcluhan's Phd dissertation was about the thunderclaps in Finnegan's Wake. And y ou probably noticed that I just spelled it wrong. Why is there no apostrophe?
  6. Seriously, I'm impressed.
  7. I downloaded and have listened to this Harriot release several times and really enjoyed it. I'm a little confused by the notes. Was this music once considered "free"? Seems to me each of the tracks has a (slightly complex) theme followed by some improvisation followed by a restatement of the theme-- just like most bop tracks.
  8. Got this on my Facebook feed this am. https://store.errollgarner.com/products/liberation-in-swing-centennial-edition-limited-edition-boxed-set?utm_source=social&utm_medium=ad&utm_campaign=audiophile&fbclid=IwAR3Y7rSNB3bFxReJ65XlFCfm8agv37JNwImf1OAHSxZoR-ElZRLVIYORKqU
  9. I loved it when it was new.
  10. I remember when the Fantasys were on coloured transparent vinyl.
  11. IIRC this was true even before Time Out. (Isn't there a mention of Brubeck in Jail House Rock.)
  12. Wonder if there are any other tapes in the vaults.
  13. Rhapsody is in the public domain.
  14. I do have what I guess is a bootleg of it. Also I made a DVD from a VHS of the broadcast which was not the whole concert. Biggest surprise to me was that they did Watermelon Man.

    Tony Scott

IIRC the Darren McGavin Mike Hammer used Harlem Nocturne as the theme. No idea whose version it was.
  16. IIRC the Miles/Gil record was the best selling of the lot.
  17. Yes, but with the arrangements Gil did for Miles.
  18. They haven't been alive anywhere near 50 years. It's easy for old farts like us to know this stuff. I mean, I studied with Marshall McLuhan-- twice.
  19. The DJs have a show called Morning Becomes Eclectic. and their taste is indeed that (more so than mine and I expect yours) but they weren't born when this was a new record.
  20. On Monday "Press Play" on KCRW started a week of listeners picking their favorite tracks and though most of it was recent pop/rock/dance etc the host began by playing her favorite: Chinoiserie from Eclipse. She included part of Ellington's spoken intro and the guest djs on the show were blown away by it. (One of them exclaimed something like "How did you find that!")
  21. I can't resist.
  22. I'm surprised that no one's mentioned The Willem Breuker Kollektief.
  23. There's a lot about Riot in the book about music in 1971 ("Never a A Dull Moment") as well as the tv series derived from the book ("1971: The Year the Music Changed Everything"-- or some silly name like that.)
  24. I didn't know that. (I do remember him stating after the release of Tijuana Moods that RCA was the first label to have paid him any royalties. ) How well did 3 or 4 Shades do commercially?
