  1. Last night I briefly thought I'd made a discovery . On playing Dial 1005. Tempo Jazzmen Diggin for Diz - featuring Gabriel on trumpet , I wondered why I could hear firstly no Bird secondly I heard an unlisted vibes player. My error was of course to muddle this with "Diggin Diz" recorded the previous day with Parker and without Bags. Anyway it was fun for a brief moment thinking I'd uncovered dome sort of unheard classic. The version on Dial 1005 is rather more secure than the Parker version, wonder why that might be !!!
  2. I bought my first CDs in January 1987, I didn't hate LPs but had become frustrated by crappy pressings. Robert Parker's Fats Waller collection was my first jazz and my first CD my next two were Kind of Blue and an early Japanese BN of Somethin Else. Being a student I didn't have much of an LP collection any way ( around 150 LPs or so of rock/pop). I didn't sell any LPs but built my CD collection from then. About 6 years ago courtesy of the "what vinyl are you spinning" thread I invested in a half decent TT (Rega P3) and then realised the error of my ways. I still by CDs but prefer to go for LP if possible.
  3. Interpret with care, the listing in V V will never be definitive but it's unlikely that albums high on the list will be bad. I however prefer to go for new releases recommended by critics whose previous recommendations have worked for me. With Jazzwise I'm more interested in the individual lists rather than their overall poll. I for one, like the Jason Moran, I'm not sure what makes him a "fake" but his album works for me.
  4. Which carrier delivered the set, UPS, FedEx or TNT? UPS They may hit you with a bill later. That's what happened to me last time Mosaic used UPS to send me a set a few years ago. I got a bill from UPS a week or two after they had delivered the set. one time DHL hit me 6 months later with their grossly inflated invoice, never used them since. I'll wait on the Post Office- which will mean into the New Year for mine
  5. How does this compare with their self titled debut disc on Okka ? I found their first hard to like despite my admiration for the band in other contexts
  6. Dance bands with hidden jazz soloists sound much more interesting on 78 than on other media. For example the dreadfully titled "When the morning glories wake up in the morning " by Jacques Renard & his coconut grove orchestra is one such case, perhaps it's because Bix is on the other side of the Victor. Next a few random selections. I've around 250 78s, mostly in brown paper sleeves which arent ordered on my shelf. Adrian Rollini- Lessons in love/ Tap room swing- Decca- quite commercial material but Tap's good
  7. I like what I've heard by Brad, Goode's good. ......
  8. Just got my TT back after a 2 week hiatus caused by motor failure. Spinning loads of records enjoying a new catridge too. Currently ..........The Kenny Dorham Memorial Album- (Xanadu)... Pretty crummy sound but listenable . KD excellent as ever
  9. Hmmmmmm....... Wonder if it'll be here (in my lap) in time for Christmas, it might be if I went DHL but last time I used them their charges were gross.
  10. As I've no turntable at present to play LPs I've spun a fair number of 78s in the last few days, recent finds including Jack McVea All Stars- Open the door Richard/ Lonesome Blues- Black& White - 1947 - quite a hit at the time , can't find out who the all stars were though. Really R&B- The Jacque Rabbits Ladies Lullaby/ Illinois Stomp ARA Lem Davis - Nothin from Nothin/My Blue Heaven- Sunset Arne Domnerus Orkester- You can count on me/School Days- HMV Sweden - features Roffe Ericson Murray 's Ragtime Trio -[b Beer and Turnips/ Hors d'oeuvres 12 inch HMV from circa 1918- my oldest 78- very restrained English ragtime - recorded 1915 I believe. Hadn't realised that ragtime had travelled that far so early . Tame but interesting.
  11. Tyrone Washington- Natural Essence- BN (Toshiba) - fine set that has taken a few years to grow on me. Make's one wonder re the train wreck session
  12. Horace Silver- Song for my father- BN MM 45 rpm issue, sounds very good and way better than my McMaster CD ( which I'll be keeping for the extra tracks etc) I find Crescent more "out there" than Ornette's output around then.
  13. Picked these up on 78 yesterday to enhance my listening pleasure, had the choice of three copies of Creole Rhapsody, went for very clean Brunswick UK, the 2 Victors were obtained in early UK HMV 78s which both appear to date from 1932 , so I'm guessing they're first issues. As for the music particularly enjoyed Limehouse Blues
  14. Sonny Greer and His Memphis Men Saturday Night function/ Beggars Blues recorded 1929 , Columbia UK (1937 issue) , 2 melancholic sides by Ellington that I quite like, prominent bass , sounding very much better than the transfers on the OKeh Ellington 2CD set negative review in Gramophone from 1937
  15. Swiss label hatOLOGY issued Warne Marsh/Gary Foster Revelation material on Ne Plus Ultra (hatOLOGY 603) in 2006, while the Henry Threadgill Mosaic came out a couple of weeks ago. o Ne Plus Ultra is very fine but there are "floating around" Marsh/Foster recordings that would make for a very interesting set of unreleased material
  16. Got my Carter/Bradford Mosaic Select a week or two ago, it sounds really good , no filler here at all. Very fine set Hope we might see some Warne Marsh / Gary Foster unissued Revelation come out As for the Jamal I'm firmly on the fence regarding whether I really need 9 cds of this sort of material. Guess it lies in 3rd place for my next Mosaic with the upcoming Ellington and Threadgill ahead.
  17. Familiarity breeds ..................... I'm not too keen on the A train, not one to excite me in any version, sorry
  18. very cool, thanks for posting
  19. Handbrake allows you to rip to whatever format you wish, checkout the options, click on Toggle presets (far right tool bar) and select the output that most closely matches what Youtube require
  20. has not set their status

  21. Eddie Costa- he recorded many sessions but not nearly enough as the leader
  22. She got a job elsewhere. weren't there 7 employees just 2 years ago, if my memory is correct it underlines the down sizing that Mosaic has been through.
  23. Very cool, excellent music of course and the picture quality is better than might be expected , sorry no idea how to fix the sync problem
  24. Sonny Clark - Leapin' and Lopin'- (BN Music Matters 45rpm )
  25. Shipton's top recommendations are The Missing Link and Timeless (Delmark),
