Got a Lunceford fix today from my local 78 stockist, Plenty to chose from but I selected Four or Five times/Rose Room - UK Decca Red Label Solitude/Stratosphere- Decca US (299) Yard dog Mazurka/ Hi Spook - Brunswick UK 03511- two Geral Wilson compostions/arrangements being the particular attraction Blues in the Groove /I'm in an awful mood- Vocalion US (5395), Cheatin on Me /'Taint what you do- Vocalion US (4582) Lunceford Special/White Heat- Columbia UK 1944 Super Rhythm-Style Series No.7&8- mint ! Very pleased to get Stratosphere as this track was on the BBC New York Robert Palmer compilation what drew me into early jazz back in the late 1980's. That track plus the Durham arranged Blues in the Groove are the best so far. The first sides listed above of the two Vocalions show quite a bit of groove wear compared to the reserve sides. These were obviously previously enjoyed by former owners. Recordings are also pretty loud/hot which leads to premature wear I'm informed

It's a hard question to answer, as we all have our favourites we'd like to see back in print but for anyone issuing a CD a general consensus probably matters more. It's got to sell after all , otherwise his next reissue might be his last. So with that in mind I'd suggest ...... Joe Daley Trio at Newport (RCA) and Hadley Caliman- Iapetus-(Mainstream) . I don't know the latter but judged by it's reputation it might be worthy of consideration

I was told recently that some 78s issued from the late 30s onwards were in some way different to allow juke boxes to play them. As I understood is there was a extra groove added near the spindle hole to allow the changer mechanism of the Juke box to "grab:" the disc. Not sure if this makes any sense. Any idea how this might have worked .

Bluebirds I have are all excellent, quiet surfaces and excellent dynamics. Not sure how they were priced compared to other issues. Were they a "budget" label ?

Best wishes to all caught up in this. TV pictures can really only hint at what must be very difficult circumstances.

Hank Mobley Blue Note TOCJs For Sale
Clunky replied to LWayne's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I've Poppin on TOCJ, the Mosaic CD version and a couple of the titles on King LPs. All sound just fine to me. -
New Coleman Hawkins Mosaic big box coming
Clunky replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
not being a discographical expert I'm not too clear how much of this might be new to me. I have lots of Hawk scattered across CDs, LPs and 78s. Assuming the sound is top notch I'd go for this even with extensive overlap with what I have already. -

Arsenal were great. Hard for me to be objective being a Gooner but the whole Arsenal team stuck at it when it would have been so easy to cave in. Wilshire is just a superb talent, strong , fearless and great awareness and control. The return trip will be interesting indeed. -
Went to my local stockist and searched through the Black Swing section of the 78s looking for more Eddy Howard (with Teddy Wilson)). Found plenty of other TW titles but not the ones I was looking for. Instead I got a couple of Asch sides John Kirby JK Special/ KC Caboose Asch (purple label) - main attraction being Budd Johnson on tenor- two swinging sides, John Kirby Mop Mop/Passipied Asch - same group as above from 1945 ( I think) , Mop Mop lightly boppish ( written by Feonard Leather) and Passipied - slight classical influence. Budd sounds like Jacquet 4 decent sides in good condition but of course as noted above even pristine Asch sides sound like.....noisy

Since upgrading my turntable I've played almost nothing but vinyl- some amazing sonic revelations..Now I'm back to normal listening and enjoying vinyl like never before Van Morrison - Astral Weeks Annette Peacock- I'm the one this album just amazes me. Brilliant !!! Sonny Rollins - Volume 2 - BN NYC- perhaps slightly overlooked in Sonny's output , perhaps it is a shade behind the likes of VV, Newk's Time etc

Agreed 100%, i've a number of those Jamboree recordings and they're very fine. Byas seems to show up on all manner of labels in that period, as you say. I really need to organise my collection of 78s as I can never find things. As they mostly come in pretty generic covers, they end up getting shuffled all over the place. With only around 250 sides it doesn't take too long to find what I'm looking for. The problem and the delight at the same time is getting distracted by other 78s you come across in your search which then get added to the "play" pile.

I've the coupling of Exactly like you/Stardust ( Columbia)- I'd missed Christians solo on Stardust but hear him clearly now that I re-listen. Any idea what else came from this session ?

I've a gold CD of this session on Freshsound (FRCD 7001), claims 20 bit mapping from "original stereo tapes" . It's certainly in stereo and doesn't sound like a needle-drop to me. Sound is pretty decent , with wide sound stage but the tenor very much to the left. It sound a little grainy with the sound of the sax the only thing that suffers. I've not heard any other version so don't know if the gold CD etc makes any difference. I'd guess not !!!

What about "Asch" in the 40s. Asch by name ash by nature ! -
Gearbox have also just released "Partying with Joe" a quartet session informally recorded in 1956. My copy arrived yesterday, sound is quite acceptable under the circumstances with Harriott sounding quite Bird like.

Just received my copy of this set. So far listen through Discs 1-4 ,5,8. Unlike some I'd have no problems with the sound which strikes me as quite faithful to the original 78s. Compared to the French LP release it's much cleaner, relatively forward sounding but certainly not harsh. I've around a dozen or so sides from this set on 78 ( mainly UK Brunswicks). The sound here in the set bears close and favourable comparison, only Mosaic had access to better copies than I have so there are fewer clicks. I've not heard any other CD transfers of this material. Perhaps harshness is a playback system issue for some posters but I don't hear it- and my HiFi set up is pretty revealing. It's a great set, which I think can be bought with confidence if you're interested in the music.
