    Snurdy

Whilst digging around my vinyl collection I found , Roscoe Mitchell and the Sound & Space Ensembles on Black Saint, I hadn't palyed it before and can barely remember buying but it's not at all bad. A bit of son-of -snurdy feel to it, although not quite in the same league Instrumentation slightly expanded on Snurdy with the notable addition of "tenor voice". Usually I run a mile from such vocals but it works pretty and fits in nicely. Anyone infatuated with Snurdy would do well to give this one a listen too.
  2. not sure if this helps wesbed but, of the twenty or so Mosaic sets I rate the Tristano/Marsh & Konitz right at the top of the ones I own.
  3. the earlier Hans Koller MPS reissues dont appear to have distribution outside of Germany which is a pity as they and these look interesting.
  4. I'm quite fond of this one New Life: Dedicated to Max Gordon on A&M from 1975 AMG doesn't rate it but it's pretty good in my book.
  5. '58 sessions "Stella by Starlight"- especially the four studio tracks
  6. Hadley's first Mainstream LP entitled "Hadley Caliman" is rather better than the two stars AMG gives it (there's a surprise) . It is however nothing especially memorable heavily indebted to Trane and modal vamps with a tcickle of electric miles added to some track. His tone is the most appealing thing about the album, it's a slight pinched nasal tone thats really distinctive even if the compositions aren't. Glad I picked it up.
  7. can anyone who has or has seen the new disc "Give" in the U.S.A tell me if it's copy protected. The UK version is CC so I won't buy it, however much I like the Bad Plus.

    Hadley Caliman

Couldn't find the thread on Hadley Caliman, recently picked his self titled LP on Mainstream ( no recording date given early 1970s?) but was looking for other recommendations and was sure there was a thread. No sign- I may be I was thinking about the old place
  9. the best drummer i have ever seen and i've seen plenty this groups two releases on Crazy Wisdom are pretty terrifying ( for your neighbours) but well worth seeking out ( they are pretty hard to find in my experience). Paal always brings loads of CDs and Lps to his gigs so take plenty of cash if you're going !!!
  10. Hank's album got me interested in Thad, it's a real beauty and touchs a raw nerve of sentiment every time. Thads compositions are extraordinary some remind me of Herbie Nichol's.
  11. I've recently rediscovered my vinyl collection and been adding to it at some speed. I can vouch for what you say about prices . A good second hand store near me charges £10-15 for basic stuff (nothing rare). This strikes me as pretty expensive. Most of the stuff I've picked up though has been bargain basement stuff ( generally in good enough condition). I generally look for stuff that isnt likely to be on CD anytime soon and appeals to me. It's been a great way to hear some great things really for very little money. I wasn't aware that my activities were part of up swing in vinyl's popularity. Perhaps we will see new releases coming out on vinyl?
  12. http://www.sugdenaudio.com/ if you are interested, the A21a is said to be valve like because of its pure Class A operation ( lots of heat loss). This is very handy for warming muffins or socks if the need arises.
  13. what is there to be hyped about vinyl and why now?
  14. only cost me £1 so I'm not complaining
  15. well, I'm very pleased with my Sugden. One thing has puzzled me is what point the Mono button serves. I realise it's for mono recordings but what benefit is there meant to be in using it?
  16. incidentally for anyone interested this seems to be a poor pressing with lots of surface noise despite the fact that the LP appears visually to be in mint condition
  17. I've got em all, and will continue to do so, highly entertaining and really pretty good value if you consider how much information is carries,
  18. Phil Woods- Song for Siphysus ( a little harsh sounding direct-to-disc recording) Al Haig- (title?) on Sea Breeze (solo LP, very good) Dick Oatts- All of three- Steeplechase (excellent) Dennis Gonzalez- Old Time Revival- Entropy
  19. another for this recording, had it only a few days but its a good one.
  20. Do you mean the A90 , its slightly more powerful version of the A85 and has in true Arcam tradition more knobs and inputs than you are likely to need. Capable of taking an on board surround decoder etc. I passed on its soft sound and went for a Sugden A21a Class A amp (designed years ago but it belted its opponents)
  21. thanks brownie
  22. Looking for info on this good LP ( bootleg?)I picked up. No recording date given and I cant find any info. Its produced by Michael Cuscuna and is on a German label TobaccoRoad subtitled American Jazz and Blues History Vol 56. Any one know the real source of this recording. Its basically a sax quartet album with Dom Salvador (piano), Stafford James(BASS) and Joe Chambers.. any extra info appreciated
  23. warm welcome, lots of love for KD here.
  24. awaiting this disc, I am not especially familiar with Turner but what I have (YamYam and Dharma Days) seems pretty good.
  25. I haven't noticed an holes on mine, am I missing something?
