  1. It was in Jazz Review UK magazine, will need to check issue number, but they reviewed a number of Smalls cds

    Charlie Mariano

Mariano's playing on some of the sessions on the "Kenton Presents..." Mosaic is superb.
  3. It's good enough as a session. The piano playing is a little heavy handed, a bit like Tapscott but without Horace's sense of control. Bass is excellent, drummer could be more imaginative. Tunes are too long as well, still listening though, so this isn't a definative view yet
  4. It's my long list, Jazzreview were very positive about this one last month, I enjoy Elmo and will probably dig this too. How's the sound quality?

    Bix Beiderbecke

How is the JSP Bix and Tram box set, is it a reasonable "Best of"?
  6. What is really the problem there? I've listened to the Moncur Select tons of times and I do not have any problems with the way it sounds. Is it really a poor remastering job, or is this merely a (very) subjective opinion? another voice here in favour of the Moncur select. Sound is fine, clear and strong . I hear the rolled "S" on the vocals but that's no big deal for me. The sound on the "Destination Out" session is pretty much the same as on the Conn. version IMO.
  7. I listened to this last night, it's a great session. Not having heard the LP I can't say reallybut the sound is occasionally a little distorted on the piano and there is a slight sense of the music being veiled , but it strikes me as ok. Russell's Jazz workshop CD on RCA is another matter, why are the original tracks in such muffled sound compared to the alternates takes( I have the RCA France version). Perhaps the masters were lost? is the Koch version any different?
  8. Anyone know anything about this four ? LP series . It's on the raretone label (Italian), Cant find it listed anywhere.
  9. I am green with envy, really been enjoying a couple of his dates a lot lately. Pity he's not recorded more often.
  10. I light of these comments highlighting KVM failings I've relistened to what I have by him (KVM5, School Days, Freefall). I can see the R'n'B thing in his solos and granted his improvisations some times seem a little grounded, but the package as a whole is very attractive to listen to. Live, he and his groups are rivetting and not just because he's surrounded by ace players. Attractive compositions (ok with relatively simple few pretensions beyond their dedications), fine pacing and boundless enthusiam. I'm still buying KVM.

Thanks for all the CT tips, still working out what I'll try , probably Willisau, Blazons and Nefertiti ( if I can find it)

The Things other Crazy Wisdom CD has Joe McPhee is also recommended but I probably prefer the earlier disc mentioned by HRH Ubu

It may be the receiver and not the batter.

Ok I'm really a Funny Rat lurker but want to get my head around later Cecil Taylor this year. I've avoided his post 1950s stuff largely for some time considering them too far out. So would "Nailed" and "Celebrated Blazons" be a good place to start.?
  16. Some cheap vinyl Jimmy Blanton Years - Duke Ellington - Queen Disc ( airshots 1940/41 in variable sound) Jimmy Hamilton- Everest ( WRC release called "In a sentimental mood") Duke Ellington Hindsight, vols 4 and 5
  17. You can't ever have enough Konitz IMO recent arrivals here include Nonet - Roulette 1979 with Randy Brecker Lp (ever on CD?) Star Eyes Hamburg 1983 with Martial Solal Vols 1 & 2 Jazz Exchange Live with Warne Marsh , Montmarte- Storyville Gong with the wind- duet with Matt Wilson- Steeplechase Crosscurrents- really a Bill Evans Fanasy date ( with Warne again) a favourite is still "Dig it" with Ted Brown on steeplechase.
  18. Bunny Berigan JSP set... I felt guilty because of its reported provenance.
  19. I think "Greatest trumpet..." is pretty good I've got it on a World Records (UK) pressing from the mid 1960's. Nice arrangements by Gigi Gryce? and others ,a bit like Tadd Dameron as far as I remember.
  20. just received this from those Cyber people along with the J.R Monterose "In Action" all for the pricely sum of £12 including postage !! Should be interesting. I know very little of Gil's latter stuff but I'm a big fan of Monterose.
  21. I was really surprised that I enjoyed it so much, goes to show that you should challenge yourself with stuff outside of your usual envelope! Thanks for the input Lon, I can see this will probably my next Mosaic purchase ( much later this year, on account of glut of unlistened too CDs and LPs)
  22. I just picked up a fairly battered but listenable vinyl of JT at the Roundtable, how indicative is this of the JT Mosaic as a whole. I've been very surprised how good is sounds, real swinging performances that sound quite modern in a way. The pianist Don Ewel seems especially sprited-don't know anything about him. any further thoughts?
