  1. some of the best from 2003, not a complete list but some of the new non Caber CDs I have enjoyed the most this year  Bad Plus These are the vista Sony  Andrew hill Passing Ships BN  Ted Brown “Preservation” Steeplechase  Lee Konitz- “Live Lee” Milestone  Phil Grenadier “Playful Intentions” FSNT  Brian Patneude Variations WEPA  James Muller Thrum Universal  Matt Wilson Humidity Palmetto
  2. HMV in Edinburgh are carrying two of these warner versions of the mosiac set. It comes in a tall book form with centrally placed pages. Cover photo is the same a sthe full mosaic set. Jazzwise this month carries an add from Warner re this set. Clearly its demise from Mosaic is closely linked to its re -appearence fromWarner
  3. sadly the BN Bud box is a blurry effort with very odd graphics , illegible discographical data and generally hard to follow. The sound is better than the orginal 80s CDs but not by much .A poor effort from BN.
  4. excellent Powell, I think I will always regret getting Powell's complete on Verve as ther is so much poor playing on that disc that it spoilt my appreciation of Bud at his best . Vol 2 and Vol 1 on BN are sure his peak ( along with his earliest Verve stuff) RVG has done wonders with the sound and both these represent a significant sonic upgrade that even the most cloth eared can hear.
  5. On the strength of this thread I picked up Nielsens 4th-6th and Honnegers 1st -5th and i am very impressed. Great recommendations thanks Chuck and Bev.
  6. this is all very disappointing that all this should result from one poster fling some in these forums. The inability to learn from previous encounters is what marks out disorder personalities from the norm. I'm not sure WINGY will be found in ICD9 as there isn't a classification for time wasters. ignore please and delete this thread
  7. me too great idea
  8. School days were great in Edinburgh ( Henrys). Nilsen Love is one of the best if not the best drummer I have ever heard. He constantly amazes. I have seen him 3 or 4 times now and his power and finesse astonishes me. They had loads and I mean loads of CDs at Henrys that night and some LPs too !! Restricted my self to Freefall Furnace that I posted about and Atomic new Jazzland Acoustic CD "Boom Boom" and something called "Exploding customer" . The last two are as yet unplayed but surely will rock !!!!!
  9. this is my favourite
  10. Yes, on this CD from the Jazz in Paris series: Strangely, this omits one track of the LP, Piano Mecca, that was left off all subsequent issues. But, Clunky, this issue is listed in my discography, or do you need an update? Thanks Mike , I must be getting the various "Clubs disques" mixed up. Anyway your wonderful discography lists two other sessions from spring 1956 which don't appear on the any of the JiP, emi france, vogue ( sorry don't have the disco. to hand here at work) reissues. I suppose otherwise, for a figure as marginalised as LT we should consider ourselves very fortunate that so much of his stuff has been reissued on CD- roll on the MPS reissue program

  12. That Hampton date is sounding more and more intrigung. Have the Club Amis ? dates from March 1956 even been reissued
  13. I'll say straight up , that I am not employed either by Caber, but do have an official ( unpaid) postition on the label. I have no financial interest in sales of Caber CDs but do hope these artists get their dues. I have hesitated before from mentioning Caber lest I was accused of spamming the board !!! Glad you like Colin's second album, it's the equal of his first but with a slightly greater Scottish feel. This has been a cracking year for Scottish jazz with 7 CD issued this year by Mario Caribe, Colin Steele, Nikki King, Trio AAB, Martin Kershaw, Chick Lyall and Dave Milligan. The music really does have its own distinct Scottish identity but that doesn't mean that it's all kilts and tartan. Just quality jazz informed by folk. The Caber website is and has been for some time quite difficult to navigate and use but that will be changing shortly. The new site should be online shortly. Sound clips are readily available for down load.
  14. I've just been spinning Ira Sullivan's "Bird Lives" double CD with Nicky Hill, there is something unsettling about the date. Can't put my finger on it but it sounds unusual ans sort of out of place. I sounds like updated Bebop unlike much else I have heard. Nicky can certainly play !!! Worth checking out
  15. Ensayo is the Spanish label concerned. I had to take the Cd back twice to get a playable copy. Pity Chuck doesn't appear to have rights to a CD issue of his own. Sound is good although I am pretty sure that Chuck mentioned some time ago that the Nessa LP sounded better.
  16. don't know this one, is it on CD?
  17. In need of a corner of his own……too argumentative?….my favourite Lucky T is almost a Zeilig like character . He crops up all over the place on some of the most famous recording sessions. No need to adjust your set, he really was there at pivotal moments with a long list of the good and great of jazz. Who else worked with Bird, Miles, Mingus, Milt Jackson, Monk, Basie, Kenton, Kenny Clarke, Martial Solal, Oscar Pettiford, Jimmy Cleveland, the list never seems to end. His own sessions have that extra something. If he ever recorded a poor one I’ve not heard it ( although I ‘ve only heard a fraction of his 40s output) My favourite sessions are quartet four sides led by Kenny Clarke featuring Martial Solal available on the EMI france "Swing Americans in Paris" Choose your own….
  18. i've got a specimen container that would do
  19. Just picked the Louiss up, different from Mile's interpretation !!! Not really had much of chance to take it in but it's clearly not the fondue material that I might have feared. Bernar Peiffer; Just found a very battered copy of JiP "La vie en rose", curious stylist really , half way between Teddy Wilson and touches of Powell. He has some rather flowery touches here and there in the manner of Red Garland but these are redeemed by some genuinely arresting takes on thems such as "Caravan". For those who buy their music by the kilo it's over 65 mins long. Worth picking up.
  20. "Love walked in" very partial to Burrell's and McDuff's version
  21. Webb City by Bud, love that tune
  22. Hasn't he got new one due out on Palmetto?
  23. The Criss is a soild effort with plenty to enjoy it's a quintet with guitar , bass, drums, piano/ organ . Very well recorded. The French studios really seem to have got their act together by this point (1963) There is an additional Criss session on the JiP "Saxophones from St Germain..." set. I wouldnt go out of my way to get hold of "Mr Blues pour..." as it really shares allot in common with other Criss session more readily available such as the Alladin 2CD set.
  24. agreed, see my earlier post, it's superficially appealing , but its lack of depth means only the absolutely grooviest of tracks (Mercy....) remain of interest after the first play through. This session convinced me of the superiority of Adderly's earlier work on Emarcy and Riverside.
  25. Stephane Grappelli JiP disc "Plays Cole Porter" featurs ogan and vioilin to great effect even including a duo track of these two unlikely bed fellows. Good album. Also features Jimmy Gourley, Daniel Humair and Eddy Louis
