  1. this is available on vinyl as are som other Time releases, don't know the source but I recently picked up a new copy of brother Tommy's Time release on LP, sound is good (but not spectacular) and pressing clean
  2. sorry, all new jazz EMI european CDs are CC
  3. Anyone know of a comprehensive way of checking out copy proctection status of new releases / reissues. We all know EMI material is CC in Europe, what about Columia/Sony. I gather the new Bad Plus disc on Sony is CC but don't know if this applies to the euro version only. What about the new Duke Legacy releases. The whole issue is certainly causing me to stall purchasing stuff until I know it's clean. So is there any website /resource keeping track of this customer-unfriendly practice? edited to correct as coloured red
  4. Funnily it was my Chico set that took the longest too. By the time it arrived the set was totally OOP, so I was sweating. Mind you when it did arrive complete with the AEC Nessa set it was well worth the wait !!!
  5. Not great finds as such but I am amazes by all the stuff available on vinyl ,although its undoubtbly hit or miss in terms of availabity. Since recently buying my nice Rega turntable I have discovered loads of shops selling decent second hand vinyl a cheap prices. Typical example was yesterday getting "Lee Konitz Nonet" on Pye and Gerald Wilson Discovery Lps for just £4, both unplayed.
  6. their service is second to none in my experience, i would be pretty chilled about the orders arriving at different times. Sometimes when I order by surface it arrives in UK in days other times 5 weeks. An example of their good service was that the box to my Roy Eldrige set was crushed , they sent me a replacement without any fuss.
  7. this is great news, email sent by the way Chuck how did you decide which alternates to include/exclude, I remember you saying that there was perhaps enough for 2 CD. I don't buy music by the kilo but just curious how these decisions are arrived at.
  8. for an UK residents Hoggs Head Records in Edinburgh had this disc the other day for £6.99 I think, not sure how ever if they do mail order.
  9. is there any word on copy control for the U.S. issues of these discs ? , I presume the european versions will be CC as before.
  10. I am a big Berkman fan having seen him live numerous times and all his Palmettos Cds to date. All are uniformly of a high order. Communication Theory is perhaps the high point so far. I felt that the immediated post 9/11 aftermath of his last "Leaving Home" allowed a rather restrained melancholic air to pervade that date. It's still a fine album by any standards and has my favouright tune "For ever Astor" , named after that tango chap. To be honest you cant go far wrong with the man, compositionally strong and a great team of players ( his debut has a mercurial Tom Harrell gliding over the whole thing) I will be seeing David live at Henry's next month for sure.
  11. for the Brown , one of my favs from last year
  12. won't this be part of the expected Mosaic Reece select ?
  13. now working here, thanks
  14. Dizzy Gillespie-"The Greatest trumpet of them all" Verve 1957? underated session with great arrangements by Gigi Gryce etc

    Malachi Favors

    very sad, too young.
  16. Mosaic boxes have receipts but no value recorded on them. So it doesnt matter if customs open them. I see the $5 per disc as being the Cds replacement cost ( to Mosaic). Any order of 5 or 6 discs is safe from customs (UK) in my extensive experience. Without this policy from Mosaic my purchases would halve.
  17. This Cd sampler was programmed to appeal to those new to jazz, so indeed some of the tracks represent the soft side of the artists concerned.
  18. any views on Classics "Undercurrents" by Kenny Drew or "Red Arrow" by Red Rodney- thought I might give my newly aquired turntable something of quality to play, do these fit the bill ?
  19. Are the more recent issues of this great album in improved sound . My Affinity Cd from the late 80s sounds ok but a little rough.
  20. Mine sounds ok, certainly not the worst.

    Funny Rat

It's well worth it , essential IMO
  22. Hype is certainly a problem here. I have seen and talked to these guys well before the hype started and they on the level as well as being creative musicians of the highest order. I can't wait for their next disc. Their individual side projects all stem from well before Bad Plus was taken up by Sony. All are worthwhile and some are touched by something special
  23. Lon you should see the European versions of this series , these are ultra flimsy and look frankly pathetic the us digipak versions seem of far higher quality by comparison ( the Sonny Stitt , New York disc is a good example)
  24. Given the worries over Stuff's box I was considering Johnny Hodges later verve box from Mosaic , given it's provenance it too might suddenly expire. I have some of the material "Side to Side" and the "Blues a Plenty " session (from the Webster 2-offer CD). These are both fine disc but suggest that the results might become quite formulaic if repeated over 6 CDs . How does the Hodges set stand up , is it formulaic or just plain fun spread across 6 CDs. any thoughts
  25. I amn happy to have this set especially as courtesy of those Germans it only cost me £20 or there abouts. It is a bit repetitive in feeling and would not be worth spending much money on. A few single CDs such as "Straight Life" and "Winter Moon" and you would pretty much get the measure of this box. Sound is rather one dimensional thoughout. Not an essential box compared with Bill Evans on Riverside or Herbie Nichols Bluenote
