  1. it's ok , nothing too amazing as I recall. Doesn't reflect his more mature soulful style
  2. i've had a few , no worth bothering with IMO- pretty flat but worse pressings seem dodgy-
  3. Michael Gibbs--------s/t----------(Deram) immaculate US pressing picked up yesterday at local record fair.
  4. I've that edition - great Esquire cover. NP fire! Orchestra -----Ritual------( rune grammofon)
  5. It's a newish purchase so I'm not best positioned to give a long distance forecast but there's nothing no to like. Carla Bley's sometimes beautiful pieces are very much to the fore. A proper quintet record with strong contributions from all concerned. I like it.
  6. Carla Bley/ Mike Mantler/ Steve Lacy--------Jazz Realities------(Fontana) Japan
  7. Harry Beckett---------Still Happy---------(My only desire) Short (28 mins) August 1974 BBC broadcast in fab sound. Some highly cheesy electric piano and electric bass shouldn't put anyone off. It's a great date and sounds wonderful. Highly recommended. Hats off to My Only Desire for licensing this from Auntie and getting it sounding so good. Pressing is perfect on medium weight vinyl - shows how it can be done.
  8. I missed this thread , very sad to hear. I was enjoying his playing on Barry Guy's Mad Dogs set the other day . RIP
  9. Barry Guy is 'too' productive for me to keep up with. This one however is on the way. The two previous sets were excellent
  10. Big John Patton-------Got a good thing going--------(BN) NY USA stereo
  11. Lucky Thompson's Bop & Ballads arrived today. It sounds excellent . The focus of the music is Lucky with him getting the majority of the solo space. The only regret would be the minature size of the photos and the incomplete nature of each date. The producer has re-sequenced the tracks and mixed the two sessions about. The chosen track order works very nicely.
  12. Johnny Richards -------The arrangers touch-------(Vogue UK) white label Not played this in age because I recall being less than overwhelmed. Started with LP1 - My Fair Lady . It's ok but nothing so far that strikes me as especially memorable. Not sure if this is a keeper as I look to prune selectively. I'll try the Diablo session later tonight.
  13. I didn't recognise this until Discogs revealed that my copy of "Blues in Orbit" (ENJA ) is the same date. It's a very fine Evans session .
  14. For me it's his first album that doesn't have any weak moments. All his Prestige dates and even Blue Trane have their less than brilliant tracks.
  15. John Coltrane ------Giant Steps-------(London) mono my first Trane and best (?) . I recall an interview with JC from around that time where (iirc) that he rated "Soul Trane" and "Blue Trane" as his favourites. I recall being surprised that he didn't rate GS amongst his best. The interview from March 1960 Stockholm is on the Miles Dragon set. Perhaps his view reflected the fact that Steps had only just been released ( Jan 1960) as so wouldn't be as widely available as the other two he cites. Always interesting which releases an artist prefers.
  16. Lee Konitz Trio --------Oleo-------(Sonet) Dick Katz's electric piano (and normal piano) and Wilbur Little's bass make a great combination with Lee. 1975 NYC
  17. Two 1993 Toshibas from their Blue Note 4000 series. Both sounding excellent and super quiet. I've always found the Toshibas to sound decent. Freddie Roach------Down to Earth Grant Green---------Am I blue
  18. Seconded . I've had a couple of Dynavectors over the years and they track well especially on the inner grooves and have well balanced and detailed sound. Currently using an XX2 which is good as I'm ever likely to need.
  19. There's now a good William Parker Quartet CD in this series. Recorded in Brazil last summer.
  20. Hank Mobley --------Far away lands---------(BN) dreaded DMM French issue from 1984. It actually sounds very good with nothing to complain about. I don't have any other DMM discs to compare but this one is good and music excellent. A very fine later BN Mobe.
  21. is that 'mmmmmmm....' good or bad? For me Ole is the least interesting Atlantic despite adding Dolphy .
  22. I regret only on his death investigating Paul Smoker , this album just arrived and it's a real gem.
  23. Thanks for the link. Ted Brown is someone I can't get enough of. All his releases have to my ears been very good or better. I wish he'd recorded more but we can be grateful for what there is and that it is of such high quality.
  24. Different release and location/ country/ date
  25. The Monk/Trane sounds fine. IIRC it has totally different mastering to the CD version for which Thelonious Jr. was responsible. Again if IIRC the CD mastering came in for some criticism - I'm completely happy with the LP edition.
