  1. Received today . Managed a brief listen to disc one. Sounds very promising .
  2. PM sent too
  3. Ok, well I've got all of the Dragons and would echo Lon's appraisal that they're all excellent. The more recently mastered Volumes have slightly better sound and better notes. My picks would be Danny's Dream Vol 5 , for the title tune and After Eight Vol 11 for the flower septet pieces - heard in vastly improved sound compared to the Collectibles CD. Get them all and then try to find the wonderful Anagram discs issued under Gullin's name, Harry Backlund and Rolf Billberg. All feature great Gullin largely from the mid Sixties . Sound of these can be challenging but is ALWAYS worth it!
  4. Threadgill - disc one - just arrived
  5. I've listened to the new mix on Spotify and it's very good indeed. Much clearer separation of the instruments / voices , having said that I'm not sure I'll bother with a physical copy. Quite happy with the mono box, first CD issue and an original Parlophone mono LP??
  6. Horace Tapscott----- Autumn Colors------(Bopland Japan) fine trio session, shows a clear debt to Herbie Nichols perhaps more than Monk
  7. Great set, I love Ella's young voice especially . Plenty of instrumentals though of those less inclined to vocals.
  8. Welcome to the board and what a great set you chose for your first post. I recall that I picked this up at the end of its run and so glad I did . It's cracking and in great sound.
  9. I'm in the same position re the Threadgill set. Last thing I heard was an email indication that the shipping confirmation would follow . It never did ,......
  10. Earlier Johnny "Hammond" Smith------Mr Wonderful--------( Riverside) mono LP Now The Beach Boys-------Pet Sounds-----( Capitol ) 50th anniversary version . Sounds even more stunning than usual.
  11. Another ? 'Sophisticated Lady' from this but an Affinity compilation was my first exposure to Shepp or Jeanne Lee for that matter. The whole album shines through a rather murky mix. NP Sun Ra -----Cosmos---(Blue Silver) a rather fine set from Paris 1976
  12. I'm still awaiting my copy as it was omitted accidently from my last order from Catalonia. I was hoping for some new Lucky Thompson but as I understand it , there are just arrangements rather than his playing . None the less a very interesting sounding release .
  13. It's from Denmark as I recall
  14. There should be an unreleased early sixties Monk live quartet date coming out hopefully later this year. Apparently in very good sound courtesy of Yurpean radio engineers.
  15. I think the sound is excellent. I was prepared to tolerate the trio tracks but in fact they swing hard. I'd say the album is on the same level as the Verve release but not quite as high as Full House which my personal favourite .
  16. I'm likewise indebted . The Pheon LP arrived today and it's a fine reissue , which has great sound appears to have consent of Amancio's estate.
  17. The Art Ensemble 1967/68 ------------------(nessa) currently playing disc C (numbers 2 &1 ) great music of course but the remastered sound (1993) doesn't show its age , great deal of space around the instruments so you really can hear very clearly what's goin' on. As i recall I didn't get this from Chuck but via Mosaic when they had a promotion of discounting non Mosaic discs if you purchased a box of theirs. In retrospect that was cheating as the music is totally priceless.
  18. Can't offer any theories about the title but the music on this LP is one of APs very best.
  19. Another thumbs up for this release. I'm glad we have so much from this uncommon pairing. Regarding the sound it's more than adequate. Works especially well with headphones on !
  20. I've been reacquainting myself with this group with the quartet performances here before cracking the cellophane of the latest trio disc. I really like Lake's playing and this group is excellent. The trio work so well together and to my ears at least it always seems fresh even if older tunes are revisited. They have a decent number of recordings of which these are all I know . Any other standouts or recent Lake recommendations?
  21. A great CD and one of my earliest jazz purchases and my first exposure to Duke and/or Rabbit NP AEC - Jackson in your house - (Affinity) My first exposure to AEC. In 1987 as I delved into jazz I was fascinated by an entry in Barry Macrae's Jazz Handbook. It had this intriguing picture (below) along with recommending amongst other things "People in Sorrow" (nessa). Being pre internet days I had to make do with what I could find and that was this Affinity CD - complete with bootleg like cover. Well, despite the poor sound and lacklustre presentation AEC had my attention and still do !
  22. encouraging , I think there have been some negative comments about the sound on this and the Dial set ( which I don't have either). Music on both will be great and I have loads of it on 2LP sets and a few CDs and even a very few original Savoy 78s
  23. Gerry Mulligan Sextet on emArcy -LP4 pleasant, if not exactly earth shattering.
