I like it too but can sympathise with those having trouble with the guitar here - it's a bit too prominent!

Jeff thanks for taking the trouble and your thoughts. I perhaps don't have enough Lacy to have a bottom 10%. I listened to both sides several times last night and enjoyed quite a bit of what I heard. Coming to it as a Lacy album one would be perhaps disappointed that Armstrong's playing somewhat rides rough shod over Lacy. It doesn't have the delicacy of Lacy's finest. In the end I can see where your reservations are coming from but I got sufficient enjoyment to keep the album.... Now playing ... Lee Morgan ---Here's Lee Morgan-------(Veejay) dg-stereo

Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orch. - All My Yesterdays
Clunky replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
I bought the Grant CD around the time it was issued. I had no idea that is was a boot nor that it was a CDR.( not sure I can always tell unless its very green in colour). I generally don't buy boots and certainly not CDRs (majority seem to deteriorate to unplayable in only a few years) -
I'd be interested in you thoughts upon renewed acquaintance. It has overtones of Cherry/Rollins in that Armstrong comes from a more bluesy place than Lacy. The connection between what each of them plays isn't immediately obvious (to me at least). Still found enough to enjoy though. Thanks , I'll try to remember that next time I see a copy

Walter Zuber Armstrong/Steve Lacy -----Alter Ego, Duets-----(World Artists) rec 1979 BIMHouse New arrival picked up on the basis of Lacy - seems quite interesting so far.

Agreed, Peter Clayton's style drew me to jazz in my late teens. He was enthusiastic and an excellent communicator. I really stopped listening to JRR after he died. It just wasn't the same.

How's the Zagreb LP. I've hesitated picking this up in the past . Attracted by the cool Jazz Life cover but wary of the image of this being cocktail lounge music. Currently spinning Lucky Thompson----Plays Jerome Kern and no more---(Moodsville) not the world's best pressing.....

Arild Anderson---Shimri-----(ECM W.Germany) rec 1977 with Juhani Aaltonen and Lars Jansson. At its best when Juhani doesn't play the flute. When he does it has a dreamy like effect of being lost in a Norwegian forrest in the depth of winter. Personally I prefer his more muscular tenor sax playing. Jansson is great on piano.

Alan at Jazzhouse records has a sealed copy (possibly copies)

I'd forgotten about that disc (which I have and like, even if Kral doesn't really float my boat) Now playing ... Sam Noto------2-4-5-------(Unisson Records) Quite a dry sound on this lovely date. The duos with bassist Neil Swainson are especially effective. Noto's originals are quite arresting. I've not played this album in years but it's only now hitting me how good it is. This deserves to be played more often and better known. Ted O'Reilly of this board gets production credit.

Herb Pomeroy Orchestra------Life is a many splendored gig-----( Columbia EMI) ex Roulette 1957 Some interesting tunes an playing here with an enticing cast of unsual suspects. Boots Mussulii plays fab alto sax , Jaki Byard is among the tenor sax players. Ray Santisi whose work with Serge Chaloff is at the piano stool. A little like a Kenton side but it swings, has plenty of passion and doesn't try to be too clever. i'd be interested to know if this outfit recorded any more.

This is the other release that I have on this label, a 2LP set by Christian Schwindt. Also a new name to me but the write up sounded enticing,

100% agreed. These two hold a special place in my collection. There's next to no detail Amazon has this track listing for the Gullin. 1. Bluesport 2. Out of Bush 3. I Love You 4. Ablution 5. The Flight 6. Fascinating Rhythm 7. Get Out of Town 8. The Things We Did Last Summer 9. I Got It Bad and That Ain't Good

Harold Vick--- Straight Up ----(RCA) 1967 Decent album , not as strong as his sole Blue Note title. I think his Strata East is probably his best. Albert Dailey is fine on piano with a nice touch. A few tunes sound a bit commercial - no doubt for radio play. It must have been quite a thing for Vick to have 2 albums put put by RCA in the late 1960's. Others will know better but I'm not aware of RCA being especially active with jazz in that period. The sound of this Dynagroove record is nice and clear.

I like this set quite a bit . Original French pressing isn't the greatest

Roy Eldridge/Bud Freeman with the Elmer Snowden Sextet ----Saturday night fish fry------(Fontana) lively date produced by Chris Albertson in uncommonly good stereo sound. It's a real hoot with everyone sounding like they're having a good time. A real all star line up with the Bryant brothers and Jo Jones making up the rhythm section. My UK edition has one of the cool Jazzlife b&w covers.

Carsten Meinert Kuartet-----To You ----( Fredericksburg Records) 2015 reissue of 1968 Danish LP Very much in the manner of classic Coltrane quartet. Meinert does bring something else to the picnic so this doesn't merely sound like a. Trance copyist at work. Very high quality reissue . FR have a tiny output but the two things I have released under their imprint are of the highest order. Definitely a label to watch. I'll be interested to see what jazz they do next. I missed out on the CD which has 4 previously unreleased tracks.

Congratulations!!!!

Annie Ross ----with Tony Kinsey----(Xtra) 1966 reissue in excellent condition. picked up yesterday - a great set in a cabaret/jazz style ( Brecht like). Lyrics are a political satire by and large.

Vinyl edition sounds good for those interested. It comes with download coupon so I'll be able to compare to digital. No apparent sonic limitations to vinyl playback. The music is simply stunning. Nothing casual about any of it. All killer no filler.

Larry Young---In Paris , The Orf Recordinds-----(Resonant/INA) Side 1 so far seems stunning. Wow!

Wow that's some selection. I have been spinning my 78s on a regular basis but haven't added to my small collection for some time. My local sources pretty much dried up. Searching through unsorted piles at charity shops yields very little jazz , blues or anything else of substantial interest. I've plenty -although no Joe Oliver - to keep me happy.
-
I ordered this directly from the label. It arrived here very quickly and sounds absolutely stunning so far.
-
Despite KBs valid concerns I will go the vinyl route for this one. Probably wasting my money ....but..its vinyl

Thanks to all I've had a great day!
