  2. At the Resonance website, 40% off sale, with Promo Code BFS2014 through December 1.
  3. I saw him at Mezzrow in October in a duo with bassist John Webber--his playing was strong.
  4. The Genius of Art Tatum #2 (Verve/Clef trumpet label). Price sticker from Marshall Field & Company, at $4.98.
  5. Charlie Patton, Prayer of Death, parts 1 and 2, then Jelly Roll Morton, Deadman Blues, takes 1 and 2--that's 12 minutes--how about an encore? The King Oliver version of Deadman Blues?
  6. Jimmy Smith, Rockin' the Boat (Blue Note NY USA mono), and Antonio Bribiesca, Mexican Classics volume 3 (Orfeon mono).
  7. Off to the island I go... 1. Charlie Parker--KoKo (Savoy) 2. Art Tatum--In a Sentimental Mood (Solo Masterpieces) 3. Duke Ellington--Mount Harissa (Far East Suite) 4. Charles Mingus--Los Mariachis (Tijuana Moods) 5. Lester Young--Dickie's Dream 6. Jelly Roll Morton--Spanish Swat (Library of Congress) 7. Louis Armstrong--Tight Like That 8. John Coltrane--Spiritual (Live at the Village Vanguard)
  8. No, it's the island that Tom Hanks was on--just you, a soccer ball, and an ipod with 8 tracks on it.
  9. Kindred Spirits is on a Mali reissue roll--another superb issue... Le Kene-Star De Sikasso (1977). http://www.amazon.com/Kene-Star-Sikasso/dp/B00L3Q4C0E/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416494338&sr=8-2&keywords=Le+Kene-star+de+sikasso To amend my comments, the first side of the LP is three tracks, and all three are fantastic cuts. The second side is a single long track, with very fine instrumental passages, but also there are aspects that are very local--it's a storytelling type of track, with lots of dialogue and vocal imitations of the female voice--I probably won't listen to the side 2 track more than a couple of times. The first side is prime material, however.
  10. I saw a concert by Erroll Parker once, leading a ten piece group. All of the solos for the entire concert were dual--two players simultaneously soloing.
  11. Wasn't that one of those where the master tape was lost? Yes, apparently so.

  13. New York Times Travel article regarding resurgent live Ethio-jazz scene in Ethiopia. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/11/16/travel/in-ethiopias-capital-a-resurgent-jazz-scene.html?_r=0 In the reissue department, from 1977, Hailu Mergia and the Wallas Band (Awesome Tapes from Africa) is a fantastic instrumental album. Anyone who likes Mulatu Astatke (he's on some of the tracks) and the Ethiopiques series will enjoy this one. http://www.amazon.com/Tche-Belew-Hailu-Mergia-Walias/dp/B00MXG1YDQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1416159237&sr=1-1&keywords=Hailu+Mergia
  14. Duke Pearson, Sweet Honey Bee (Blue Note Liberty). Not a great copy of the LP, but still it is amazing how much better it sounds than the CD.
  15. The last time I saw him live was with Mike Dirubbo; he was a very fine bass player. Viewing a couple of obituaries, one says he's on 150 recordings, and another says 50, but with no list. He's on Roy Hargrove's Nothing Serious, which is worth obtaining.
  16. The Sounds of Jimmy Smith (Blue Note W. 63rd). Unfortunately a beaten copy. Jackie McLean, One Step Beyond (Blue Note NY USA). A nice copy, found yesterday for $15.
  17. The Dallas Tinariwen concert was extremely enjoyable. Excellent sound at the Granada Theater. Attendance was a little light (I'm guessing about 125-150 people). On the subject of fabulous CDs, this one from Mali in 1977, reissued by Kindred Spirits, has been commanding a lot of listens: L'orchestre Sidi Yassi de Kayes http://www.amazon.com/LOrchestre-Sidi-Yassa-Kayes-Vinyl/dp/B00HV3ME8U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415853944&sr=8-1&keywords=sidi+yassa
  18. The Meyerson has very nice sound. I also like the sound in the new Winspear Opera House.
  19. Jimmy Smith, Home Cookin' (Blue Note NY USA, mono), and Art Tatum, The Genius of Art Tatum No. 6 (Clef).
  20. Tonight, Tutu Jones at Babb Bros. in Trinity Groves. An evening of spirit lifting blues/soul.

  22. Now that's a great website.
  23. Last night, an extreme rarity in Dallas, Mali desert blues at the Granada Theater, with Tinariwen--a fantastic concert.
  24. Happy birthday!
