UNT 2014 Jazz Lecture Series: 2014 Jazz Lecture Series Submitted by Jazz at UNT on Fri, 12/20/2013 - 1:48pm Our Jazz Lecture Series was started in 1982 by Neil Slater, who had just started at UNT after many years in the New York area. Neil said that he couldn’t take the students to New York, but he could bring New York to the students. Since 1982, our students have been able to learn from and talk with guest artists from New York and lots of other places. Here's the lineup for spring 2014. Lecture series sessions are 9:30-10:50 and 2-3:20 in the recital hall in the music building and are open to the public. Please contact us in advance if you plan to bring a group of any size. 1/28 Jeremy Pelt, trumpet 2/4 Billy Harper, saxophone (afternoon session only) 2/11 Julian Lage, guitar 2/18 Marshall Gilkes, trombone 2/25 Ryan Truesdell, composer-arranger 3/4 Phil Markowitz, piano 3/18 Bob Cranshaw, bass 4/22 Joey Baron, drums -

A long time favorite, I wish I had gotten an opportunity to see him play live.
-
And a wonderful Charnett Moffett solo concert it was!
-
I'm late but catching some of the Stacy Dillard set, joined by Joel Frahm tonight. On Sunday night, Charnett Moffett is appearing!

South Florida Jazz Part Deux - Dr Lonnie Smith in Delray Beach!

Lonnie Smith is playing in San Antonio at the end of January; I hope to be able to attend. -
My $6 gamble yielded not even a single number.

At Half Price Books, most of the new/cut-out CDs are European/Spanish pirate/PD knock-offs. So I was surprised to find a stack of copies of a Barney Wilen CD the other day on a French label, The Osaka Concert (Trema). It's a pleasing live performance, with Laurent de Wilde, Gilles Naturel and Peter Gritz.
-
Yes, I noticed that, I wonder why. I'm looking forward to the late night Saturday set, as Stacy Dillard is there again; last Saturday's set by his trio was fabulous.
-
I missed that, but I'm pleased to be hearing the Stacy Dillard trio right now.

Mingus at Carnegie Hall is on Atlantic.

Happy birthday!

I like her playing alot, but a significant part of the vocals on Coin Coin Chapter 2 were not at all to my liking; it pretty much sunk the project for me.

I heartily recommend It's About Time!, a trio EP(!) from 2008, with guitarist Cary DeNigris and bassist Paul Ramsey. i was listening to some of his recordings with Dolphy the other day and thinking about what a unique sound that group had. He was such a crisp, swinging and melodic drummer and helped in the development of a lot of musicians over his long career. Thank you for the music, Mr. Hamilton. Paul Ramsey is a masterful electric bassist. Cary DeNigris I heard first with Ronald Shannon Jackson (When Colors Play and Texas), and both he and saxophonist Eric Person then joined Chico Hamilton's group and made quite a few very fine recordings (for example, Trio on Soul Note, which is Chico with Cary DeNigris and Eric Person).

The upcoming week looks strong: Monday night has Ari Hoenig, featuring Shai Maestro on piano. Tuesday night features Logan Richardson, who reappears as a sideman on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday night features Noah Preminger, with Frank Kimbrough. Friday and Saturday, Freddie Redd appears. Friday night, Don Friedman also appears as a sideman immediately before Freddie Redd, and the late night set on Saturday is Stacey Dillard's Brooklyn Circle.

George Adams with Jimmy Knepper, Hugh Lawson and Dannie Richmond, I like that group.
-
Francisco Mela is one fantastic drummer. Last night I was frustrated by a shaky audio feed for the first set, until George Garzone joined Melissa Aldana's trio, then it cleared up. I enjoyed his playing, but the last two songs of the second set, back with the trio were the killer performances of the evening.
-
Thanks for the reminder; I'm been wanting more late Bechet, so I picked up this Tresors set for a pittance on amazon (less than $8).
-
That is true, the other albums are better than the VV material, which is poorly recorded in my opinion.
-
I also received notice of shipment.
