  1. His duet recording with Sonny Sharrock is also recommended.
  2. The Essential Coleman Hawkins (Verve)
  3. Zawinul (Atlantic)
  4. I thought Mingus said that when he heard Jeff Beck doing Goodbye Pork Pie Hat, he heard the sound of money. Beck's version of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat on Wired or Blow by Blow (I forget) is pretty tepid next to the two recorded Mingus versions.
  5. I thought the best performances on these concerts were by Gilmore (especially) and Ra. The sound balance could be better, and it's a bit of overkill (one or two concerts would have been enough--I thought the second concert of the four was the best)--but as you say, it is quite good at various times. I like the drummers as well.
  6. Yes, Foley's "lead bass" sounded like an electric guitar to me.
  7. It seems like I've been waiting forever for Charles Mingus Live at Ronnie Scott's, originally recorded by Columbia, to be released.
  8. Charles Mingus--Let My Children Hear Music (Columbia) Charles Mingus-- Bluebird (America)
  9. Herb Ellis and Charlie Byrd -- Guitar Guitar (Columbia two eyes, mono)
  10. I agree. I bought the Prestige twofer back in the mid-1970s and have always really liked this band.
  11. I was on the fence about getting that one, but after hearing it I'm glad I did.
  12. Favorite April Fool's Day Pranks involving Explosions.
  13. These are her releases as a leader or co-leader: Firefly 1981 Take Two 1982 Transitions 1983 Catwalk 1984 Together with Larry Coryell, 1985 East to Wes 1988 This is Me 1990 Transitions and Catwalk are my two favorites. In addition, I recommend the Richie Cole/Hank Crawford CD Bossa International, which is a live recording featuring Emily Remler.
  14. Back in the early days of the Mingus Big Band performing at the Time Cafe (early to mid-1990s), I had occasion to see and hear Britt Woodman a few times in the trombone section--it was quite a thrill--he had a beautiful sound.
  15. There are some nice original sessions on the Jazztone label--like, for example, there's a very nice Mary Lou Williams session that has never been reissued, as far as I can tell. Definitely a collectible label, at least as to Jazztone original sessions.
  16. Half Price Books: It is annoying to have to wade through their three or four legitimate used jazz CDs when you only want to look at hundreds of gray market Spanish CDs and other cheapo rip-offs.
  17. He's on a couple of the Mingus Dynasty recordings, Chair in the Sky and Live at Montreux. He's also on the Mingus album, Pre-Bird.
  18. Rock Groups You Wish Played Louder
  19. If only there could be more drum solos at jazz concerts.
  20. Rickey Ford--Future's Gold (Muse promo) George Wein's Newport All Stars (Atlantic promo)
  21. Jazz references in the Brady Bunch Guess the Jazz Giants' Favorite Fruit and Vegetable If there were a Jazz American Idol, should Paula Abdul be a Judge?
  22. Richard "Groove" Holmes -- Misty (Prestige, blue label)
  23. For Fats Waller, the 1960s era RCA Vintage series LPs are a better choice--amazing sound on those RCA Vintage LPs (not limited to Fats). Never heard of these. Do tell! The three that I have (all great) are: Sidney Bechet--Bechet of New Orleans (LPV-510) (1965) Fats Waller--Fractious Fingering (LPV-537) (1967) Jelly Roll Morton--Mr. Jelly Lord (LPV-546) (1967) I don't have a complete list of the series (at least 46 LPs), but it started at LPV-501, with Coleman Hawkins. There are others by Fats, Jelly Roll, Duke Ellington, Benny Moten, King Oliver, Jack Teagarden. All three I have are pre-Dynaflex, heavy vinyl; two are deep grooves. This might be the best sounding series of vintage jazz releases I've run across. In the upper left hand side of the front cover, it says "Vintage Series" with grapes underneath.
  24. Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons--Firebirds (Comtemporary, green label) Ornette Coleman--Tomorrow is the Question (Contemporary, green label)
  25. For Fats Waller, the 1960s era RCA Vintage series LPs are a better choice--amazing sound on those RCA Vintage LPs (not limited to Fats).
