Cuban-born and New York-based Pedrito Martinez is a master percussionist and an irrepressible bandleader who has recorded or performed with Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Paquito D’Rivera, Bruce Springsteen and Sting. Pedrito’s Habana Dreams was the #1 Latin Jazz Album in NPR’s Top Jazz Albums of the year and was one of the Boston Globe’s picks for best World Music Album. The group possesses a rare level of virtuosity, but it never gets in the way of their ability to get a room moving. Masks are strongly encouraged at Miller Outdoor Theatre. If you are unvaccinated or are uncomfortable sitting close to others who may not be wearing masks, the performance will be livestreamed on Miller Outdoor Theatre’s channels.

I purchased my pass just now. Really looking forward to this. I did notice that hotels seemed to be fuller than usual when I booked a couple of weeks ago, so I would advise taking care of that sooner rather than later if planning to attend.

I heard him play piano with a group including Buddy Tate, Norris Turney, Slam Stewart, Scott Hamilton, and Warrant Vache at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1987. Much later (in 2016), again in New Orleans at Jazz Fest, he came out on stage beaming after a Geri Allen set dedicated to Errol Garner.

Smalls honoring veteran musicians. We decided to honor several musicians who have had impact on our Smalls eco-system by creating the "SmallsLIVE Living Masters Award". Our criterion is that the musician must be 65 years or older. He or she must have had a significant career in jazz and recognition by their peers and, finally, had to have had a relationship with Smalls (or Mezzrow). This award has two components. One is a cash award to the recipient and the other component is a live performance and recording at the club. Our goal is to benefit and document these lifelong artists. The first award went to a project co-led by Tyler Mitchell and saxophonist Marshall Allen (96 years old). They did an amazing live show that we preserved with audio and video recordings. The second recipient arrives today to New York from France, the great Kirk Lightsey. It's our great honor to bring Kirk back to the city, first time back since the pandemic. He will perform at Smalls on Tuesday night and Mezzrow on Wednesday. Thursday afternoon we will be doing a closed door recording of Kirk's group that features Mark Whitfield, Santi Debreano and Victor Lewis. The third recipient will is the wonderful Sheila Jordan and she will do her project along with Alan Broadbent and Harvie S on October 25th. Other musicians chosen for this award include, Steve Nelson, George Cables, Victor Lewis, Frank Lacy and David Liebman. Please watch for them as we announce their upcoming concert dates.

John Handy's jazz-Indian music fusions are perhaps the most successful-- Karuna Supreme (MPS) and Rainbow (MPS). Dave Holland played a concert in Dallas in 2017 with a group of mixed jazz and Indian classical musicians that was fantastic--I don't think the group has recorded. There is Good Hope, a scaled down trio version, but with only Chris Potter and Zakir Hussain. Aakash Mittal is an alto saxophonist playing in the same vein as Rudresh Mahanthappa that I heard at the Ragas Live Festival a few years ago in a trio with Rez Abassi on guitar. Sameer Gupta, who I heard at the same festival, is a percussionist with Marc Cary, who combines jazz and Indian music in his own recordings.
